„Heritage Trends in the Mirror of Social Change. Conservation Reality – 50 Years after Venice Charter” May 8 – 10, 2014 Riga, Latvia

Introduction To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Charter of Venice, to rethink the role of social tools in motivation of restoration of cultural heritage, and to consider the positive experience in restoration of monuments of architecture after World War II, ICOMOS International Scientific Committee for Theory and Philosophy of Conservation and Restoration provides the annual meeting of experts in an encouraging way of traditional exchange of opinion in conference reports, as well as thematically organised work in three sections: 1. Experience in conservation and maintenance of heritage of architecture; 2. Complex restoration of architectural ensembles in urban and vernacular space; 3. Philosophy of the reception of Heritage after WW II.

The main objectives of the meeting and conference -

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Charter of Venice and to revise and activate the criteria and principles of the Charter, To analyse the social motivation for all works of protection of cultural heritage and restoration of monuments of architecture, To exchange on international level the positive experience of conservation and restoration of urban complexes and single monuments of architecture, To define objective criteria for protection as a documents of time and culture the heritage of post-war architecture and environment.

Venue Thursday, the 8th of May, 2014. Plenary meeting and workshop in two sections will take place in Riga, Latvia, Portrait Hall of the Latvian Academy of Sciences on Thursday, May 8th , at 11.00 AM. Address: Academy Square -1, Riga, LV-1050. Third section will take place in the Architects House, Torņa Str. 11, LV- 1050 Riga. An evening Reception given by “Live Riga”. Friday, the 9th of May, 2014. The second day of the conference will take place in two venues: - Section 1 and 2: visit to Turaida medieval castle and presentation of the papers continued - Section 3: presentation of papers in the Architects House and city tour in Riga. Saturday, the 10th of May, 2014. 10.00 – 13.00 Riga sightseeing and visit of selected sites in the Capital of European Culture 2014.

Excursions 1. Friday, May 9th, 2014 for the Sections 1 and 2 transfer to Turaida castle by bus at 9.00 from Town Square. Arrival at about 19.00. 2. Friday, May 9th, 2014 for the Section 3 bus tour to selected monuments of postwar architecture 3. Saturday, May 10th, 2014 – 10.00 to 13.00 walking sightseeing tour presenting sights of Riga Old Town, Art Noveau.

Participation Travel expenses, hotel – covered by participants. Bus transfer on Friday the 9th of May from Riga to Turaida Castle and return, as well as bus tour to the monuments of postwar architecture in Riga – admission free.
