Program Name: Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Foundation Program Description: ● This 40 week Heavy Mechanical Trades Foundation program includes technical training and a work experience component. This program will be of interest to individuals looking for a career as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician, Truck and Transport Mechanic, Diesel Engine Mechanic or Transport Trailer Technician. The program will cover 37 weeks of ITA Level One learning outcomes in the technical training requirements for all four heavy mechanical trades. ● You will also be required to find an employer to complete a three week work experience practicum. (Students may be able to apply their work experience towards their apprenticeship hours later at the discretion of the Apprenticeship sponsor.) ● Students will be exposed to on-the-job conditions sand should be prepared to work outdoors regardless of the weather. Students must be in good physical health and have good hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Location / Post Secondary Partner: Camosun College: Interurban Campus - ​Trades Education & Innovation Centre Eligibility: All South Island Partnership Programs are available to any Saanich “school aged” student registered in any Saanich District school and meeting the prerequisites for the specific program. Pre-Requisites: ● English 11 at a minimum of 60% (or assessment) ● Math 11 (Apprenticeship & Workplace, Foundations, Pre-Calculus) at a minimum of 60% (or assessment) ● Relevant Work Experience: a minimum of 30 hours of directly related work experience Application Process: Students must meet with their school based Career Counsellor to initiate the application process. They must complete a current Camosun “program application” package, ensure they meet the minimum prerequisites, and complete a three/four year transition plan. Once the student’s application has been accepted and the student has been offered a seat in the program of choice, the student will be supported to complete an online Camosun Registration where they will pay the application fee of $41.00.

Credits Earned: ● Students will earn credit for 12 “dual credit” Heavy Duty Equipment Technician courses equalling 48 credits toward graduation

● Heavy Duty Equipment Technician TRNB 12A to TRNB 12L Materials / Equipment / Cost: ● There is no tuition cost, but students are required to pay an application fee of $41.00. ● Students will need to provide their own work boots, work wear, personal safety protection. eg: eye protection, hearing protection, hard hat etc. ● Textbook fees are approximately $800 ● Students must provide their own minor hand tools. Approximate cost ranges from $300 to $350. Transition Process: ● In keeping with our vision for a trade bound student, we ultimately want to see the student become indentured as an apprentice in industry. For some students this may happen before attending their first session of technical training, and for some it may occur following their Level One or Foundation training. In either case the student will be required to spend significant time in industry involved in Work-Based Training before returning for the next level of Technical Training. This “time on tools” varies by trade from 1000 to approximately 2000 hours until all levels of Technical Training have been successfully completed and all required Work-Based Training hours have been logged. ● For Heavy Duty Equipment Technician there are four Levels and the apprentice must log 6360 hours of WBT to complete his/her apprenticeship.
