IN THIS ISSUE:

Dying Too Early: Fight Back. Start Now. Joel P. Carmichael, DC, DABCSP I’m 49 ... and counting. Somewhere between 35 and 45 something clicked in my brain and caused me to perceive that my days on earth are not limitless. Perhaps it was the change in my hair color from age 35 (no gray hair) to 45 (let’s call it “metallic blonde”). It makes me chuckle about the early days in chiropractic practice when senior patients would look at me over their glasses and say: “You’re too young to be a doctor!” Nobody says that anymore. While our lives on earth carry a fixed number of days, here’s the deal: Many people die earlier than necessary. I’ll say it again: MANY PEOPLE DIE TOO EARLY. They die of illnesses and conditions that could have been forestalled, slowed in their onset or progress, or prevented altogether. My Mom, for example, died at the age of 63 in 1995 of a massive cerebral hemorrhage. She smoked from the time she was a co-ed studying English at the University of Nebraska. Back in college in the 50’s, almost everybody smoked. Sans cigarettes, who knows? My Mom might even be alive today! And then there is my eldest brother-in-law who, at the age of 46, died of lung cancer. He didn’t smoke. But he was a bartender for 8 years in Steamboat Springs. He was heavily exposed to cigarette smoke almost 40 hours per week. Again, without this exposure and the resultant scarring of lung tissue he’d probably still be with us. Many potential causes of death that can be forestalled, slowed or prevented altogether through diet, lifestyle changes and exercise -- including many forms of cancer, heart disease, stroke, respiratory illnesses, diabetes, liver disease, osteoporosis ... and so on. But we have a problem. In America our approach is this: Wait to get sick, then do something about it. It is reactive, not proactive. We are lulled into a false sense of security by the belief that a pill will repair us later on, making amends. Living in the here and now we dismiss the discipline of the good (and tasty!) nutrition, exercise, sleep and stress management practices we’ve been taught, tightening our grip even more on our soda pop, fried food, Doritos/Fritos/Cheetos, and peanut M&Ms. Are we sure the healthcare system of the future will be better than what we have today? Are we sure we’ll have access to what we have available to us now? Here’s my recommendation: Arrange your life, your habits and your affairs such that, so far as humanly possible, you won’t need the (limited access) healthcare system of the future. Then, if the healthcare system is highly restrictive, congratulate yourself for not needing it. If it happens to be decent, this is no matter to you -- you still don’t need it! By being proactive and preventive in your thoughts and deeds you may very well live longer and have more energy and vitality! A Sign of the Times... A genuine concern I have is for severe obesity, and especially in our kids: it is sharply on the rise. Let’s face it: our food chain is completely broken. Parents, particularly in low income households, send their kids to bed with a bottle, and continue bottle feeding them through the age of 3.

Trusted. Preferred. Experts.

Dr. C’s New Book Available Now!

Volume Issue Sept-Oct 2009

We are excited to announce the release of a new textbook introducing North America and the English-speaking world to energy medicine. The book is entitled: “Magnetic Resonance Stimulation: Using the Field to Maximize Your Health.” The Center for Spine Pain & Wellness was the first health care center in North America to incorporate the use of this powerful form of pulsed energy therapy in January 2007. While it has been used for decades in Europe as a stand-alone or supportive therapy for a wide variety of ailments, North Americans are way behind in the rest of the world when it comes to non-pharmaceutical approaches to health maintenance, and are particularly ignorant of energy medicine. By using the MRS 2000+ designo Systems in our clinic we’ve gained the ability to produce major improvements in the health and wellness of our patients, often in astonishing ways. And we’ve often been able to accelerate recovery from back pain and sports injuries as well! Our ‘resident author’ spent hundreds of hours at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center library gathering literature and doing background research in 2007 and early 2008. He began writing in July, 2008. Thirteen months later, in August 2009, we have a book! “Magnetic Resonance Stimulation is really two books in one,” explains Dr. Carmichael. “As a textbook for health care professionals it explores the relationship between our bodies as “chemistry” vs. our bodies as “energy.” By “energy” I’m referring to the verifiable, measurable flow of electrons in the body through the nervous system and through the connective tissues, and the electromagnetic fields that accompany this flow of electrons. I am not talking about ‘woo-woo’ energy. This is the real deal. It’s ‘quantum physics meets biology.’” “As a guidebook for home users of the MRS 2000 I discuss a large catalog of health conditions and how the MRS 2000 may be used to support these conditions. More importantly, I discuss a form of pollution we don’t talk about in North America: Electropollution (or electrosmog). Though we cannot see electrosmog as we see air or water pollution, the effects are no less harmful. In fact, many European countries have much stricter guidelines as regards exposure to high power electrical lines, cell phone towers, electrical currents and radiofrequencies. The fact is incontrovertible: man-made frequencies are adversely affecting our health, and, with the rapid expansion of technology in the last 130 years, has given rise to ‘civilization sickness.’ Magnetic resonance stimulation is the primary means of ‘fighting fire with fire.’ By using natural electromagnetic energy at the frequency of health we can counteract the detrimental effects of electrosmog.” The book sold nearly 1000 copies in the first 3 weeks of release and has received rave reviews by physicians and lay people alike. Dr. Carmichael said, “Anyone who is interested in the future of medicine and the future of their health will benefit from the information presented in this book.” A clinic copy of the book is available for review in our reception areas. EXCERPTS AND ORDER FORM AVAILABLE ONLINE! Interested in learning more about or obtaining a copy of Dr. Carmichael’s book? You can download free excerpts and an order form at our website: http://www.Center4Spine.com. FREE LECTURE, OPEN TO THE PUBLIC: Dr. Carmichael will be presenting a lecture on electrosmog and human health on October 9th at 7:30 pm at the Hyatt Regency Denver Tech Center, 7800 East Tufts Avenue Parkway.

...Fight Back. Start Now! (cont’d) Continued from page 1

Volume Issue Sept-Oct 2009

(Bottle feeding should be finished by the age of 1.) Not coincidentally, these kids watch tons more TV. Fast and packaged snack foods are popular, taking their toll. (Since when does a syrup-sugar thing get to be called a “fruit” rollup? Who are they kidding?) All of us would love to eat better -- we just don’t have the time! No time for exercise. No time to prepare food properly. And precious little time even to chew it! Overseas, America enjoys the reputation of being a nation of fat people. A British comedian on the Tonight Show recently quipped: “You people measure your food in “feet.”” So much for portion control... Sanjay Gupta, in his book “Chasing Life,” a book about life extension, noted that Okinawans -who live longer than any culture on earth -- have a time-honored practice of finishing their meal when the are, at most, 80% full. By contrast, we Americans often, if not usually, eat until we are past “full.” And we’re getting fatter because of it. Have you noticed that people who live vibrantly into their 90‘s generally have one or two things in common? The first is this: they are not obese. None of them. The second is flexibility. I’m learning that the majority of Europeans and Asians eat differently than we do, have a better system for procuring fresh, high quality food for their homes, and they live longer -- having a mere fraction of the dependence we have, as a culture, on drugs. I’m learning to choose food, prepare food and consume food differently. I’m learning that good food is great preventive medicine, and that every time I open my pie hole it is an opportunity to improve my health -- or damage it. I’m also learning that it’s more about the over-riding trend of my nutritional life, not one isolated event. So when tracking my diet, I don’t feel guilty about eating a cookie. I simply don’t eat cookies most days of the week, and when I do eat a cookie, I eat a cookie. It’s terrific, and I choose to be satisfied with only one! Recently I told a patient that in the year 2050 I’d be 90 years old (Lord willing, of course). She immediately shook her head and said: “There’s no way I want to live to be 90 -- I’m watching my mom age and it is not fun at all!” I understand this. Alzheimer’s, dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders are diagnoses that tend to produce grief at the mere mention of them. However, the Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago has noted that Alzheimer’s may be forestalled, slowed in its onset or prevented by maximizing oxygen delivery to the brain. With most of the interventions and technologies we use at The Center for Spine Pain & Wellness, we do just that -- improve oxygen delivery to the brain! I’ll be 50 in 5 months, and I’ve decided to “put my money where my mouth is.” My Dad had his first stroke at 22, my sister at 49 (smoker), and my Mom, terminally, at 63 due to smoking. As for me, at age 50 I want to be in the best shape of my life. So in June I started working out at the gym. Then I discovered a home video exercise program that is combining all fundamental components of exercise into a nice 13-week package that I could take on the road with me when I travel. It’s really difficult! It is definitely not a beginner exercise program and it involves a bit of high impact and high exertion exercise (like pull ups (!!)). But the yoga is fantastic. The core exercises, superb (if not, at times, impossible!)

I find myself wishing that all of our patients could experience the benefits of a regular fitness program that intentionally places equal emphasis on flexibility, coordination, balance, strength, and cardiovascular fitness. And while I realized there is much we are doing to give tailor-made home exercise prescriptions to our patients, I wish we could all exercise together regularly -- particularly in the stretching department, and particularly for our spines! It’s unbelievable to me how stiff and unbalanced my body’s become in 49 short years. The value is knowing I’ve lost ground. I can now engage thoughtfully in appropriate countermeasures: a continuous shift to a wellness lifestyle, superb nutrition on most days, and a balanced exercise program that included lots of stretching! The battle to regain lost ground has begun! So what about you? Are you ready to fight with me? Call us -- we’d love to help you!

Family Medicine Residents at CSP!

Volume Issue Sept-Oct 2009

Julianne Garrison, MD, Coordinator of the Integrative Medicine rotation for Family Practice and Internal Medicine residents at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center (UCHSC) and Swedish Medical Center (SMC), had a problem. She had accepted the monumental (and historic!) challenge of arranging residency rotations for medical physicians to create greater exposure and working knowledge of alternative approaches to health and healing. While working at the Swedish Medical Center Campus she asked some of the physicians on staff about trusted chiropractors in the area. One specialist she spoke to was Dr. Rick Schwettmann, a lead anesthesiologist and pain management specialist who has worked in the Swedish network for many years. Dr. Schwettmann recommended that Dr. Garrison contact Dr. Joel Carmichael and The Center for Spine Pain & Wellness because of the strongly positive patient feedback and the excellent working relationship they have established over the years. When Dr. Garrison called Dr. Carmichael to ask if we’d be interested in participating Anschutz Campus of UCHSC in Aurora, CO in educating the medical residents, the answer was easy! “We’d love to!” was his reply! Dr. Hang Nguyen, Director of Clinical Research and Education at The Center for Spine Pain & Wellness, has taken the lead with Dr. Carmichael in the chiropractic portion of these rotations, and she is our key resource in helping our new residents receive a good grasp of the science of chiropractic medicine. In addition, Sara Pavone, L.Ac., our acupuncturist, has dedicated a portion of her clinic schedule to the integrative medical residents. Dr. Jason Barker, N.D., is graciously volunteering his time as well, sharing his expertise in natural medicines. Together with Sara, Drs. Carmichael, Nguyen, and Barker are helping to accelerate the paradigm shift within traditional allopathic medicine. The result will be a better health care system where providers from different backgrounds will combine their talents and knowledge for better, faster and more complete treatment and prevention programs for their patients. Better interprofessional understanding has been a passion of Dr. C since 1985: “We feel very privileged to be able to participate in this program, and believe our unswerving commitment to responsible, evidence-based care has made this opportunity possible for UCHSC, SMC and for us!” As this new partnership with our medical community progresses additional residents will be Swedish Medical Center in Englewood, CO added from Rose Medical Center and from other medical institutions. We would like to express our special thanks to you, our patients, who are gladly partnering with us as we expand as a teaching clinic, and for welcoming these residents to observe your care at The Center for Spine Pain & Wellness. In some cases resident observation is not desirable, so feel free to indicate this to your CSP provider when we ask your permission to have a resident enter the room. (It is our policy to ALWAYS ask before a resident observes!)

**Massage Therapy/**EIS Specials Through mid-October! You’ll have to thank Lori Johnson, CMT, “pushy” leader of our time of accomplished and expert massage therapists. She has engineered yet another “special” for people to experience the best massage in the south Metro Denver suburbs. Those who schedule a one hour or 90 minute massage will receive discount pricing -- but ONLY if you mention that you saw it here! Also, ELECTROINTERSTITIAL BODY FLUID SCANNING (EIS) is technology that can give you insight into your overall health using 6 electrodes. It takes 3 minutes. As mentioned elsewhere in this edition of HealthCoach, Americans are spending more, taking more drugs, but steadily becoming sicker than other cultures. The scan is normally $150 and gives over 60 key indices of health. It is not a diagnostic test, but rather a health benchmark. By assessing your health with this instrument we’ll be able to map out a course of action for you, make nutritional / food recommendations, and identify potential areas of serious health risk. Through October 16th get your scan for only $75!
