Title: Grower Training, Quality Control and Buyer Promotion Program: Snake River Valley AVA Table Grape Industry Applicant: Snake River Table Grape Growers Association Abstract: 1 - Create a comprehensive Good Agriculture Practices (GAP) and Good Handling Practices (GHP) certification program to promote USDA standards for food safety. 2 - Provide regional training for production of high quality table grapes to be marketed with local buyers. 3 - Provide foundation for a strategic marketing plan to ensure the sustainability of table grape industry. 4 – Provide quality control training for growers and assistance with the development of a strategic plan for cold storage facilities(s). Project Purpose: Develop and implement a Grower Training, Quality Control and Buyer Promotion Program for the Snake River Valley American Viticulture Area Table Grape Industry Potential Impact 1 - Table grape farmers in Snake River Valley Viticulture area of Idaho and Oregon. 2 – Grower training to be certified in food safety, GAP, GHP practices and preparation for facility audit. 3 - Increase local produce manager and buyer awareness. 4 - Pre-post harvest grower training program. Beneficiaries ¾ Jobs provided by local vendors supplying specialized labor, trellis materials, irrigation systems, refrigerated transportation / storage, vineyard equipment, harvest supplies and research facilities. ¾ Opportunities for new business enterprises producing table grape products such as preserves, juices and nutritional products will be encouraged to relocate and or establish into the SRAVA. ¾ The SRAVA marketing project will promote awareness within the Idaho Preferred, Buy Idaho, “Know Your Farmer” and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs by providing growers a distribution network for local, national, international retail and wholesale markets. ¾ Reduced shipping / transportation cost and therefore providing an increased sale price in both the retail and wholesale markets. ¾ SRAVA table grape specialty crop industry growers will participate in quality control, pre-post harvest training programs and use the cold storage facility strategic plan to expand non-harvest season sales. Expected Measurable Outcomes: Outcome # 1: Increase SRTGGA website use by table grape growers and buyers. The target goal is to increase website usage by 50 %. Outcome # 2: Establish production quality control standards which distinguishes SRVAV table grape products superior to competitor markets. Outcome # 3: Provide GAP training and prepare growers for food safety audit certification Program. Work Plan Work performed by SRTGGA administration – Monthly Meetings 2010, 2011 & 2012 - Meet with cooperators to coordinate measure and access projected goals and outcomes. • 1st Quarter 2011, 2012 - Regional field training (preventative maintenance for insect and disease, rough, fine and shoot pruning). Develop training materials for GAP certification and audit.
• 2nd Quarter 2011 & 2012 – Develop and implement grower training program for pre-post harvest strategies, Regional field training (cultural practices, weed control, cluster pruning, nutrition and water management). • 3rd Quarter 2011 & 2012 - Vineyard site inspections for Pre-harvest assessment, Quality evaluation. Packaging preparation. • 2011 & 2012 – Attend Idaho Preferred, Buy Idaho, Idaho Horticultural Society and Idaho Grape Growers and Wine Producers Commission and relate public awareness events with marketing materials promoting SRAVA table grapes. • February 2011 & 2012 – Host SRAVA Table Grape Symposium – Educate growers on quality control, marketing venues and distribution options. Promote the SRAVA table grape industry as a viable & sustainable specialty crop. • December 2010, 2011 & 2012 – Host SRAVA Table Grape Growers meeting – address grower issues for pre/post harvest practices and GAP certification. Survey existing cold storage facilities within the SRAVA and evaluate potential for conversion to SO2 applications.
