The idea for ponpon.my came to self-taught developer Joel Tan when he was shopping for clothes with his mother. After she had paid, the cashier gave her a printed coupon entitling her to 10% off her next purchase. She passed it to Joel to look after, but he was afraid that he might lose the coupon. Then a thought came into his mind: What if it were possible to make these coupons digital and store them in the cloud so they could be distributed across multiple platforms? It was Joel’s eureka moment. Today, ponpon.my is a coupon cloud platform which enables businesses to create coupons across iOS and Android, SMS, email, social media and print. Customers have instant online access to all their coupons, and can use them in participating stores. Built on Google Cloud, ponpon.my is the first product created by Joel’s company Organet Systems. Google played a big part in the development of Joel’s business and indeed, in the direction of his life. Determined to create software applications to solve real business problems, Joel taught himself to program through Google search, online tutorials, forums and books. Now, ponpon.my uses Google App Engine to run apps on a fully managed PaaS (Platform as a Service), freeing Joel to focus on what he does best. Best of all, Google App Engine is free as long as Joel stays within a usage quota, so he saves on start-up costs but can scale up effortlessly when his business grows.
