NYU Department of English GLOBAL PATHWAYS At NYU’s global locations English majors gain new perspectives, whether they are studying Shakespeare in London or eco-criticism in Sydney. English majors can also receive elective credit while studying at a number of NYU global locations, including Abu Dhabi, Accra, Buenos Aires, Florence, Prague, Madrid, and Tel Aviv. In order to ensure that your study abroad plans are in accordance with proper progression towards the completion of the English major, please consult Prof. Nicholas Boggs (Director of Student Research and Advisement) at [email protected] during the semester prior to the one you wish to study abroad. Applying to Study Abroad To enroll in any of the courses offered abroad, students must first apply to the Study Abroad program through the Office of Global Programs. Using the call numbers available on the course listing pages, students can register on Albert. A maximum of 3 courses (plus the internship) taken abroad can count towards the major. Course offerings are subject to change. Consult the NYU Study Abroad Program Website and the Cross-School Minor Course at Global Sites Website for updates on course offerings for specific semesters. To learn more about Study Abroad, students may consult NYU's Global Study Planner for more information about disciplines and countries. Students are also encouraged to attend one of NYU Global Programs' weekly info sessions held Fridays from 2-3PM in the ARC. NYU London Take courses toward the English major or minor at NYU London, where the study of literature, theatre, and art complemented by theatrical outings and museum excursions. Classes are held at the NYU London academic center, located in Bloomsbury, a famous literary district and also home to the British Museum. Outside the classroom visit historic sites beyond London, such as Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford, and Stonehenge. Pathway course offerings fulfill pre-1800 and critical theory requirements as well as advanced electives. NYU Sydney Students studying at Australia’s largest and most cosmopolitan city benefit from an intimate academic environment, authors’ talks, workshops, literary outings, and field trips, including to the World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains. English majors and minors gain a unique perspective on their field, studying the region’s literature, which spans indigenous, migrant, and diasporic writings. Students attend classes in the beautiful Science House in the historic Rocks district, just steps from stunning Sydney Harbour and the Sydney Opera House. Study Abroad Scholarships Global Pathways Scholarship Program (GPS) All admitted study away applicants with financial need (as determined by filing with the OFA) will be considered for an increase in their award package of up to a maximum of $4,000 – to cover the additional costs of studying away. Students will receive an award notification beginning in June (for fall semester) or in November (for spring semester). This program replaces the appeal for additional financial aid procedure. Global Programs Merit Scholarships A small group of students that have been admitted for a semester study at one of the NYU Academic Centers will be awarded a merit grant of $1,500. Awards will be determined based on the quality of the student’s application and academic record. Selected students will be informed shortly after notification. No separate application is required.
