Botanical designation: Gentiana cruciataxscabra. Cultivar denomination: ‘Alpine Success Blue 05’.

distinguish ‘Alpine Success Blue 05’ as a new and distinct

cultivar:

l. Upright, outwardly spreading, uniform and compact

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

5 The present invention relates to a new and distinct cultivar of Gentiana, botanically known as Gentiana cruciatax scabra and hereinafter referred to by the name ‘Alpine Success Blue 05’.

The new Gentiana is a product of a planned breeding

plant habit.

2. Vigorous growth habit. 3. Freely branching habit. 4. Early and freely ?owering habit. 5. Large intense blue-colored ?owers.

program conducted by the Inventor in Bremen, Germany.

6. Long ?owering period.

The objective of the breeding program is to create new

Plants of the new Gentiana differ from plants of the

freely-branching Gentiana cultivars with early and freely ?owering habit and larger more intensely blue-colored ?ow

female parent selection in the following characteristics: 1. Plants of the new Gentiana are taller than plants of the

female parent selection.

ers.

The new Gentiana originated from a cross-pollination

made by the Inventor in September, 2003, of an unnamed selection of Gentiana cruciataxscabra, not patented, as the female, or seed, parent with the Gentiana cruciataxscabra cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01, not patented, as the male, or pollen, parent. The new Gentiana was discovered and

selected by the Inventor as a single ?owering plant from within the progeny of the stated cross-pollination grown in a controlled environment in Bremen, Germany during the 25 late spring in 2004. Asexual reproduction of the new cultivar by tissue culture

in Bremen, Germany, since 2004, has shown that the unique features of this new Gentiana are stable and reproduced true

to type in successive generations. SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

Plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 05 have not been observed under all possible environmental conditions. 35 The phenotype may vary somewhat with variations in envi ronment such as temperature and light intensity without, however, any variance in genotype. The following traits have been repeatedly observed and are determined to be the unique characteristics of ‘Alpine 40 Success Blue 05’. These characteristics in combination

2. Leaves of plants of the new Gentiana are longer and more tapering at the apex than leaves of plants of the

female parent selection. . Plants of the new Gentiana have larger ?owers than

plants of the female parent selection. 4. Plants of the new Gentiana and the female parent selection di?er in ?ower color as ?ower color of plants

of the female parent selection is red purple in color. 5. Plants of the new Gentiana ?ower from May to

September in Bremen, Germany whereas plants of the female parent selection ?ower from August to Novem

ber in Bremen, Germany. Plants of the new Gentiana di?er from plants of the male

parent, the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01, in the following characteristics: 1. Plants of the new Gentiana are larger than plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01. 2. Plants of the new Gentiana are more freely branching

than plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01. 3. Leaves of plants of the new Gentiana are more tapering

at the apex than leaves of plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01. 4. Plants of the new Gentiana have larger ?owers than

plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01.

US PP18,767 P2 4

3 5. Plants of the new Gentiana and the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01 differ in ?ower color as ?ower color

of plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01 is lighter blue in color. 6. Plants of the new Gentiana ?ower from May to

September in Bremen, Germany whereas plants of the cultivar Alpine Success Blue 01 ?ower from September to November in Bremen, Germany. Plants of the new Gentiana can be compared to plants of the Gentiana makinoi cultivar Marsha, disclosed in US. Plant Pat. No. 16,562. In side-by-side comparisons con ducted in Bremen, Germany, plants of the new Gentiana differed from plants of the cultivar Marsha in the following characteristics: 1. Plants of the new Gentiana were smaller than plants of the cultivar Marsha. 2. Plants of the new Gentiana were more freely branching

than plants of the cultivar Marsha. 3. Plants of the new Gentiana had smaller leaves than

plants of the cultivar Marsha. 4. Plants of the new Gentiana had larger ?owers than

plants of the cultivar Marsha. 5. Plants of the new Gentiana and the cultivar Marsha differed in ?ower color. 6. Plants of the new Gentiana ?owered from May to

September in Bremen, Germany whereas plants of the cultivar Marsha ?owered from July to early September

in Bremen, Germany. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS

The accompanying colored photographs illustrate the overall appearance of the new cultivar, showing the colors as true as it is reasonably possible to obtain in colored repro

ductions of this type. Colors in the photographs may differ slightly from the color values cited in the detailed botanical description which accurately describe the actual colors of the new Gentiana.

The photograph on the ?rst sheet comprises a side per

spective view of typical a ?owering plant of ‘Alpine Success Blue 05’ grown in a container.

The photograph on the second sheet is a close-up view of

typical ?ower of ‘Alpine Success Blue 05’. The photo on the third sheet is a close-up view of the upper surface of a typical leaf of ‘Alpine Success Blue 05’. DETAILED BOTANICAL DESCRIPTION
