Free West Papua Party “The Oppressed Will Be Set Free”

Response to the Statement ‘West Papua solidarity movement rejects Reclaim Australia’i In July 2015 a ‘Public Statement’ (to be referred to as the ‘Statement’) was signed and published by some 40 signatories (to be referred to as the ‘Signatories’) titled ‘The West Papua solidarity movement rejects Reclaim Australia’ii. A key purpose of the ‘Statement’ was to discredit the Free West Papua Party (FWPP) and request its dissolution because the FWPP chose to speak at a Reclaim Australia rally. A copy of the statement is also in the Appendix of this response. It’s time for the FWPP to respond to the ‘Statement’ because the misinformation being propagated by the ‘Signatories’ is hurting the West Papua freedom movement within Australia. The response is broken down into the following sections:        

Recommendation for a Watershed Moment Is Reclaim Australia Racist? Why Attack Rise Up Australia? The Argument of Guilt by Association The Philosophical Flaws within the ‘West Papua Solidarity Movement’ The Outright Lie in the ‘Statement’ Why Attack the FWPP? Reiteration of the Recommendation for a Watershed Moment

Following are the sections of the response.

Recommendation for a Watershed Moment It is recommended that the ‘Statement’ be used to initiate a watershed moment in the history of the West Papua freedom movement in Australia. The ‘Statement’ is basically a symptom of the problems within the West Papua freedom movement within Australia and highlights why the progress for West Papua’s freedom has been so slow over the past 30 years or more and who could be responsible for it. During this time the Australian Government has basically legislated its alliance into place with Indonesia. Mr MacLeod has conveniently rounded up several of the troublemakers, retardants, and recalcitrants and got them to be ‘Signatories’ to the ‘Statement’ against the FWPP. Unfortunately, Mr MacLeod has also involved some innocent people but there is plenty of opportunity to recover from being caught up in this cleansing exercise if ‘Signatories’ are having second thoughts. FWPP recommends removal of the troublemakers, retardants, and recalcitrants within the West Papua freedom movement. The FWPP has the potential to quickly free West Papua through the next Federal Election and several of the ‘Signatories’ cannot handle this. The following sections will respond to the ‘Statement’ against FWPP and expose some of the recalcitrants who have effectively knobbled the Australian movement. Page 1

Is Reclaim Australia Racist? The FWPP does not accept or support organisations that are racially or ethnically intolerant. From what FWPP has seen, Reclaim Australia is not racially or ethnically intolerant. What is a shame about the ‘Statement’ that claims racism and is signed by some 40 ‘Signatories’ many with long titles after their name, is that the ‘Statement’ does not reference one scrap of racist evidence thus the ‘Statement’ degenerates to little more than a public lynching based on the prejudices of people who are deluded into thinking that they stand on higher moral ground. FWPP encourages anybody to cite examples of Reclaim being racially or ethnically intolerant from its official material. Definitely, Reclaim Australia is against several Islamic ideologies and practices that clash with Australian Law. And these practices are not limited to Islamic extremists but are common Islamic teachings; some of these are as follows:   

 

Killing of Infidels (unbelievers) Quran 9:5 Slay and be slain Verse 9:111 Child brides Quran 65:4: The UK has some 1,500 child brides per annum, others call this paedophilia and a violation of a child's rights. http://www.plan-uk.org/because-i-am-a-girl/early-and-forced-marriage/child-marriagein-the-uk/ Sanctioning slavery and rape of slaves Verse 33.50 UK has 13,000 slaves many of them related to Islam http://www.jihadwatch.org/2014/08/uk-1400-non-muslim-children-exploited-by-muslimrape-gangs-authorities-did-nothing-for-fear-of-being-thought-as-racist http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/nov/29/13000-slaves-uk-four-times-higherpreviously-thought Female genital mutilation It has been estimated that over 20,000 girls under the age of 15 are at risk of female genital mutilation (FGM) in the UK each year, and that 66,000 women in the UK are living with the consequences of FGM. http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/female-genital-mutilation/Pages/Introduction.aspx Sanction of wife beating Quran 4:34 Teachings of torture Quran 22:19-22 says: .. fight and slay the Pagans, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem’ ‘for them (the unbelievers) garments of fire shall be cut and there shall be poured over their heads boiling water whereby whatever is in their bowels and skin shall be dissolved and they will be punished with hooked iron rods This passage has similarities with many of the West Papuan genocide photos that can be seen on the net and the word of mouth stories that West Papuans share. Reclaim is also against the millions and millions of dollars per annum that are raised through Halal Certification, in many cases no one knows where this money goes or what it is used for.

FWPP suggests that we should have intolerance towards such matters as the above. On the other hand the attitude embodied in the ‘Statement’ can be likened to one who has a PC connected to the internet and refuses to use virus checking software. Now there is evidence that there are racists amongst those who signed the ‘Statement’, following is comment by one of the signatories directed at myself: “…I don't need to learn WHITE people's language or ways to fight for the freedom of my people…” Page 2

If calling someone BLACK is racist then calling someone WHITE is just as racist. I suggest that the signatories of the ‘Statement’ would do well to ask themselves how many racists are amongst themselves and treat them the same way they are trying to treat the FWPP. Further exposure of discrimination amongst the ‘Signatories’ is raised later in this response.

Why Attack Rise Up Australia? Why does the ‘Statement’ also choose to attack Rise Up Australia? It appears to be a scatter gun approach where if the ‘Statement’ fires off enough shots then maybe one of them will hit a target. Instead this adds to the overall lack of credibility of the ‘Statement’ as it tries to defame as many people as possible. The leader of Rise Up Australia is Danny Nalliah who is a recognised champion of free speech in Australiaiii. By the ‘Signatories’ setting themselves against Danny Nalliah they are exposing their disrespect for the freedom of speech that Danny has achieved for us all. This is not the only evidence that the ‘Signatories’ are against freedom of speech, other evidence is as follows:  

The ‘Statement’ is a bullying attempt to gag and shutdown the FWPP. Key member(s) of the ‘Signatories’ (including Mr MacLeod) have been lobbying members of the ULMWP FWPC-UK to shut down the FWPP since they first heard of the FWPP long before the Reclaim Australia rally. At least one of the ‘Signatories’ campaigned for West Papua as part of a Counter Rally to the Reclaim Australia rally. The Counter Rally used bullying and fear tactics to intimidate Reclaim supporters. Police were at the rally to protect Reclaim from the Counter Rally. The Counter Rally vandalised the cars of Reclaim supporters; even those in disabled parking. The police had to restrain members of the Counter Rally. Counter rallies are problematic and are banned in other countries but they seem to be an acceptable tactic of the ‘Signatories’. I have heard information (unsubstantiated) from a couple of sources that some from the University of Sydney and possibly the ‘Signatories’ too contributed to the Lombok Treatyiv. This evil treaty effectively gags Australia from speaking up on the West Papuan genocide. I welcome any substantiation either way on this point.

The Argument of Guilt by Association Establishing guilt by association is always problematic but this is the method that the ‘Signatories’ have taken in their frenzy to put down the FWPP. So far no proof by the ‘Signatories’ showing that Reclaim Australia is racist has been tabled. But if some proof was found then FWPP according to the ‘Signatories’ is also guilty because FWPP spoke at a Reclaim rally. This type of judgement compares more to a lynch mob than people who we should trust to run the West Papua freedom movement. But if the ‘Signatories’ do like to operate using guilt by association then it is time for them to turn on themselves. So far we have shown that the ‘Signatories’ are guilty of the following:    

Their own racist behaviour; Stifling freedom of speech and bullying; Incorrectly labelling Reclaim Australia; and Ignorance on how Islamic ideology conflicts with Australian law.

Page 3

Furthermore, they are guilty of the following: 

Mr MacLeod, in his frenzy to take down the FWPP, chose to journalistically jump in bed with Nick Chesterfield. Mr Chesterfield is known by many to be an antagonist of Benny Wenda and the FWPC. Mr Chesterfield’s attacks on the FWPC add strain to the ULMWP unity. To me, some of Mr Chesterfield’s attacks on Benny Wenda align with the messages spruiked by pro-Indonesian propaganda. West Papuan unity is one of the greatest achievements in the past couple of decades and some are doing anything to protect it. To attack the FWPC or a member of the ULMWP is infinitely more evil than any trumped up claim against the FWPP. Following is an example of a Facebook attack by Mr Chesterfield on Benny Wenda who has been twice nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize: o Absolutely disgusted to find out some newbie so-called "Free West Papua" McWenda popup franchises… Which West Papuan leaders allowed this ? None - Benny Wenda is not a mandated leader, he is an exiled activist. It’s time for Mr MacLeod and Mr Chesterfield to fall on their journalistic swords and bid the freedom for West Papua movement farewell. These two have done more harm to the freedom of West Papua than FWPP will ever do. Anybody who associates with these two should step down from the cause. Furthermore, I am of the opinion that Mr Chesterfield has given us a glimpse into his depraved heart. When he refers to ‘popup franchises’ what I believe he is also showing us is that he resents the movement growing.  There are other signatories on the list that many consider to be the source of West Papuan disunity and fracturing and the sabotaging of the unification movement for many years. Yet, Mr MacLeod seems willing to court even the devil if it will help him to topple the FWPP.  Some of the ‘Signatories’ and/or their associates sabotaged what would have been Australia’s largest freedom event for West Papua, which was a Candle Light Vigil in Sydney earlier this year. The event attracted some 1000 people but the saboteurs cancelled the original Facebook invite for the event and left many supporters in disarray wondering why the movement was splintered. It is estimated that this act of sabotage set back the movement by 6 months. We need to remember that an estimated 1,000 West Papuans are genocided each month we delay.  The following extracts from the ‘Statement’ show undertones of racism, discrimination and segregation amongst the ‘Signatories’ by the use of labelling: o recently Paul Madden, a non-Papuan leader of the Free West Papua Party; o the Free West Papua Political Party that he helps lead. The decision to associate with …groups that make up the Far Right. o So when a small group of Australian leaders of the Free West Papua Party – it looks like size does matter to the ‘Signatories’. (FYI the FWPP now has some 200 members and that is despite the undermining of the ‘Signatories’. Once again it is estimated that collectively the ‘Signatories’ will hold back the FWPP by 6 months.) So the ‘Signatories’ label others as racist and now we see that they are blind to their own discrimination, segregation, belittling, and vilification tactics 

The ‘Signatories’ are being selective on who in Australia is allowed to support West Papua. No ‘WHITE’, ‘Non-Papuan’ ‘Far Right’ is allowed to spoil the click. (FYI FWPP is not Far Right or any other label for that matter. The FWPP is purely focused on the freedom of West Papua)

In the coming sections we will show further guilt and shortcomings of the ‘Signatories’.

Page 4

The Philosophical Flaws within the ‘West Papua Solidarity Movement’ The challenge with movements such as the freedom of West Papua is that they attract people who for one reason or other actually retard or even sabotage the movement. The movement tries to progress but with the retarding, and sabotaging, progress is slow. The ‘Signatories’, due in part to their territorial behaviour, must take full responsibility for the underachievement that they have overseen. This slow progress has gone on for the past 30 years or more in Australia and during this time the Australian Government has basically secured its positions in protecting its Indonesian business interests and effectively institutionalised the exploitation and genocide of West Papuans. Two pillars of the Australian Government’s institutionalising are: the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade; and the National Security Strategy. The movement in Australia over this time has been what some have called a ‘boutique’ movement that has been effectively owned by the select few. When the FWPP entered the scene it ruffled a few feathers and jealousy arose from those who had grown accustomed to the way things were. It is time for them to step aside and let somebody try something new without their interference. If Australians are only allowed to support West Papua as much as the ring leaders who drafted the ‘Statement’ against the FWPP then Australia will never free West Papua. And on the flip side if Australians were as supportive of West Papua as Reclaim Australia are then West Papua would be free very shortly. Following are some of the philosophical flaws of the ‘Signatories’ efforts for West Papua: 1. Some are happy to support West Papuans in ‘solidarity’ as they strive for their freedom but don’t believe that Australians or the Australia Government should directly get involved. Here’s a quote from signatory Peter Arndt: “We Australians are not supposed to free Papuans. It is not our struggle or fight. It is the struggle of the Papuan people and we walk in solidarity with them and support the priorities for action which they determine. That is how I intend to continue my work in solidarity with the Papuan people.” The FWPP considers this view to be fundamentally flawed. People who hold to this view will never see Australia free West Papua. The Australian Government helped create the genocide and is sustaining the genocidev. FWPP’s focus is to change the heart of the Australian Government. FWPP believe that the Australian Government has more say in the fate of West Papuans than the Indonesian Government does. If you’re associated with a West Papuan ‘Solidarity’ group that holds to Mr Arndt’s views then please reconsider. Furthermore, Mr Arndt’s statement contains an untruth; the FWPP had the support of members of the ULMWP but instead of ‘supporting the priorities’ of the Papuan people Mr Arndt, and associates, instead chose to lobby the ULMWP with untruths against the FWPP. 2. Others support West Papua’s ‘Self-Determination’ and token ‘Autonomy’ where it remains under Indonesian rule and illegal occupation. This view is politically attractive because it effectively means that the Australian Government does nothing for West Papua and business continues on as usual for all those who are exploiting West Papua. It has been heard from some sources that several of the ‘Signatories’ are actually for the ‘Autonomy’ of West Papua instead of independence and/or these people are associated with a particular political party that only supports ‘Autonomy’. Some go as far as to say Page 5

that some who signed the ‘Statement’ contributed to the Australian Government signing the Lombok Treaty. (Verification is sought on this concern; however the concern is so alarming that it warrants airing and seeking verification.) If you’re associated with a West Papuan group of this ilk then please reconsider. These two flaws are seen as significantly more evil than the trumped up claim of racism as these flaws effectively deny West Papua its freedom. We need a new approach. 90% of informed Australians support a Free West Papua. It’s just that the 10% that don’t are running our country. For this reason we decided to launch the FWPP. This could be the game changer that frees West Papua! The Outright Lie in the ‘Statement’ The outright lie, mingled with the lie of omission, in the ‘Statement’ is that it denies the full truth about the situation in West Papua and the part played by Islamic ideology. FWPP acknowledges that some West Papuans are Muslim and they are seeking Independence too. Nevertheless Islamic ideology is playing a part in the West Papuan situation, such as the following: 

 

The Indonesian Government, through methods such as transmigration, is Islamising West Papua and greatly eroding the West Papuan culture. http://www.michr.net/moluccas-genocide-on-the-sly-ndash-indonesiarsquostransmigration-and-islamisation-program.html Islamic teaching provides support and justification for killing and torturing West Papuans / infidels and stigmatising West Papuans (Quran 22:19-22) West Papua's stolen generation: http://freewestpapua.org/2014/03/12/more-horror-stories-emerge-from-west-papuasstolen-generation/ http://www.newenglishreview.org/blog_direct_link.cfm/blog_id/48915/Muslim-Indonesia-Is-Islamising-West-Papuan-Christian-and-Animist-Children-By-Deceit-or-By-Force http://www.smh.com.au/world/conversions-invoke-fears-of-west-papuas-stolen-generation20140301-33shu.html https://www.facebook.com/freewestpapua/photos/a.10153765438245010.1073741923.53 611440009/10153765438430010/

The FWPP is of the opinion that by telling the full truth then West Papua's opportunity for freedom is increased. On the other hand hiding the truth allows evil to continue. The ‘Statement’ also accuses the FWPP of spreading fear, but in reality it is the ‘Signatories’ that are spreading fear, following is an extract from the ‘Statement’: Tension between some elements of Islam and Christianity is a fact in West Papua, as it is elsewhere in the world. To date West Papua has been largely free of the inter-religious violence due to the excellent leadership of both communities; however, there are shadowy forces ready to foment trouble in West Papua and this danger is increasing... So when …the Free West Papua Party align themselves with a group that is perceived as being anti-Muslim they play into elements in Indonesia and West Papua that would like to incite sectarian violence in West Papua. They play into the hands of those who would like to give a free reign to the Indonesian police and military to arm and organise nationalist militias in order to crack down on pro-independence activists just like they did in East Timor. Page 6

There is little truth in the above underlined content, instead it is a fear mongering opinionated concoction that stifles the real truth about what the Indonesian Government, Military and Police, along with Islamic Ideology, is really doing to West Papua. What Indonesia fears the most is truth and the ‘Signatories’ are playing into Indonesia’s hands.

Why Attack the FWPP? So why are many being encouraged to turn against the FWPP? What if the FWPP has a good chance of freeing West Papua through the next Federal Election? In 1969 the Australian Government supported Indonesia in running a sham referendum called the “Act of Free Choice”. By Australia supporting the corrupt referendum and still supporting the Indonesian Military today the Australian Government has spattered West Papuan blood on itself for the past 50 years. Enough Australians now know about the genocide that Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull needs to act and act soon to free West Papua and stop the bloodshed. If Prime Minister Turnbull does not act before the next Federal Election then the FWPP will use the election as a referendum to free West Papua. We the people of Australia will be able to vote on behalf of our West Papuan friends to free West Papua. Reiteration of the Recommendation for a Watershed Moment Thanks go to Mr MacLeod for triggering this watershed moment in the history of the West Papua freedom movement in Australia. If we choose to capitalise on this moment then we can rid the movement of several recalcitrants and their flawed philosophies whose heart is in the wrong place that are holding back Australia. Following is a summary of problems that the ‘Signatories’ need to address:             

Their own racist behaviour; Stifling freedom of speech and bullying; Incorrectly labelling Reclaim Australia; Ignorance on how Islamic ideology conflicts with Australian law; Character assassination of Benny Wenda; Undermining of the FWPC and ULMWP unity; Undermining of the FWPP; Stifling of the West Papua freedom movement growth; West Papua event sabotage; Discrimination, segregation, belittling, and vilification tactics; Selective on who can support West Papua; Philosophical flaws on what will free West Papua; and Denial of the truth about the role of Islamic ideology in the West Papua struggle;

Please remember if FWPP is successful at the next Federal election then we will push for the Australian Government to free West Papua. The recommended next step for those of the movement is to rid the movement of Mr MacLeod and Mr Chesterfield and those that still choose to associate with them. Then we can break free of the shackles that they have placed on us. Page 7

Furthermore, our hope is that after digesting this response some will start to see the true nature of what the ring leaders of the ‘Signatories’ are doing to the West Papua freedom movement and seek to join a more appropriate group. If this is the case for you then you are most welcome to join the FWPP. Click for a copy of the Membership Form. We have a vision … of Australia demonstrating Leadership and Integrity to the world! We have a vision … of the Australian Spirit of Courage and Mate-Ship! We have a vision … of Australia Freeing West Papua!

Appendix – A copy of the Public Statement The West Papua solidarity movement rejects Reclaim Australia: Public Statement Respond to this post by replying above this line

New post on West Papua Media Alerts The West Papua solidarity movement rejects Reclaim Australia: Public Statement by westpapuamedia Public Statement 27 July 2015 We the undersigned are part of a national solidarity network supporting a free West Papua. We publicly disassociate ourselves from the anti-Muslim and anti-refugee views of Reclaim Australia, the United Patriotic Front, Rise Up Australia and others who associate with these groups. We extend a warm welcome to Muslims and refugees, many who are also West Papuan. As a national solidarity network with regional and international links, our practice in the past has been to confine our public advocacy solely to West Papua and not get drawn into other issues. We are speaking out now because recently Paul Madden, a non-Papuan leader of the Free West Papua Party spoke at the Reclaim Australia rally in Perth. According to posts on Facebook, West Papua solidarity activists also attended a Reclaim Australia rally in Cairns. Mr Madden and some of his associates used Reclaim Australia rallies and their social media network to recruit members for the Free West Papua Political Party that he helps lead. The decision to associate with Reclaim Australia, Rise Up Australia, the United Patriotic Front and the other groups that make up the Far Right is a mistake. It is divisive and counterproductive: it misrepresents the free West Papua solidarity movement in Australia; it undermines the free West Papua movement inside West Papua; and, it employs the very methods of religious and racial vilification we oppose. West Papuan leaders and the Australian solidarity movement do not support Reclaim Australia’s anti-Muslim and anti-refugee agenda. We are a movement for freedom in West Papua. We are against a racist and colonial system. We are not against any particular religion or ethnic group. We align ourselves politically with Indigenous people, prodemocracy forces in Indonesia, people from the Pacific and others striving for the common good. We respect people’s right to free speech and reject any association with Reclaim Australia.

Page 9

West Papua supporters in Australia are a diverse group. We are from both sides of the political fence. We come from a range of religious traditions. Some of us are avowedly secular and some of us are people of faith. Some of us were born here. Some of us came to Australia as migrants or refugees. We are for freedom, peace and justice in West Papua, and better relationships between the people of West Papua, Indonesia, Australia and the region. As a group we stand against slow motion genocide in West Papua that is aided by the Australian Government that continues to arm and train the Indonesian military. We also campaign against Australian corporations who continue to exploit West Papua’s resources. Associating with Reclaim Australia is undermining the unity of purpose of the West Papua solidarity movement. The conflict in West Papua is not a Muslim-Christian conflict. It is a conflict between the occupier and the occupied, between those who seek to deny West Papuans their rights and West Papuans defending and claiming those rights. The movement for freedom in West Papua includes many Indigenous Muslim leaders, people like Thaha Al-Hamid as well as senior journalists and NGO activists. The free West Papua movement inside West Papua also includes Muslim communities in places like Fak Fak, Sorong and Kaimana. Many of these Muslim leaders have been jailed, even killed, for the cause of freedom. For more than one hundred years Muslims and Christians in West Papua have co-existed in peace. West Papua activists living in West Papua and Indonesia are also working with pro-democracy forces in Indonesia who are Muslim, who understand the political roots of the conflict and support West Papuans’ right to freedom. Much of the violence by the Indonesian military and police in West Papua is reinforced by racism: a belief that an entire ethnic group is fundamentally inferior. Militia groups like Laskar Jihad, Barisan Merah Putih, LMRRI and the Islamic Defenders Front use the cover of religion to vilify and physically attack West Papuans, even those with no association with the independence movement. The Indonesian security forces are often behind these attacks. Freedom of expression and association is denied. The persecution of West Papuans as an ethnic group and pro-independence West Papuans on the basis of their ethnicity, religious or political beliefs is one of the roots of violence in West Papua. The Indonesian and West Papuan people are weary of race and religion being used to stir up conflict. For decades religious and political leaders in West Papua – both Muslim and Christian – have been combating religious and nationalist extremism. They have been working to create West Papua as a land of peace and for the most part they have been successful. When the neighbouring Malukan Islands was engulfed in sectarian violence West Papua stayed calm. Tension between some elements of Islam and Christianity is a fact in West Papua, as it is elsewhere in the world. To date West Papua has been largely free of the inter-religious violence due to the excellent leadership of both communities; however, there are shadowy

Page 10

forces ready to foment trouble in West Papua and this danger is increasing. As Australian advocates for peace in West Papua we support the many Papuan and Indonesian people of both the Christian and Muslim faith that are engaged in trying to resolve or mitigate the conflict. We expressly reject religion being used as a tool to extend or redefine the nature of the West Papuan conflict which boils down to the survival of the Papuan people in the face of overwhelming non-Papuan migration and dispossession of their land and resources via military occupation. So when a small group of Australian leaders of the Free West Papua Party align themselves with a group that is perceived as being anti-Muslim they play into elements in Indonesia and West Papua that would like to incite sectarian violence in West Papua. They play into the hands of those who would like to give a free reign to the Indonesian police and military to arm and organise nationalist militias in order to crack down on pro-independence activists just like they did in East Timor. The free West Papua movement rejects spreading fear and hate against any group on the basis of their beliefs or identity. Vilification of Muslims as a social group, Islam as a religion or the use of racism in any guise has no place in our movement. This position is supported by West Papuan leaders inside and outside the country. Although Mr Madden apologised via Facebook last week, that apology made no mention of the FWPP’s willingness to disassociate from Reclaim Australia. Therefore, we – the undersigned – ask Mr Madden to discontinue the formation of the FWPP and to step down as its spokesperson. Once that has occurred we are happy to continue working with Mr Madden and his associates for the benefit of the West Papuan people. Signatories
