The minutes from the Second General Session were read and approved. OFFICER REPORTS Vice-President of MTNA Student Events Joanne Smith, announced that the 2008-2009 Florida MTNA Performance Competitions will be held Saturday, October 25th at the Performing Arts Facility of Hillsborough Community College in Ybor City-Tampa. The faculty host is FSMTA member, Kenneth Hanks. She mentioned that there is a need for monitors and judges for this event. Competition applications can be found at MTNA.org on August 1st, 2008 with a completion deadline of Midnight, September 9, 2008. The repertoire requirements were in the April/May 2008 American Music Teacher. Two significant changes are that downloaded music will be accepted and the 6 month rule for teachers has been lifted. Vice-President of FSMTA Student Competitive Events In Mary Seal’s absence, Paulette Kilts presented highlights of the report. The annual FSMTA Competitive Events was held May 9-10, 2008 at UCF in Orlando. Permission to hold these events at UCF was secured through Professor Laurent Boukobza, Keyboard Studies Chairman. Thank you to each individual events chairman, and also Nancy Shackelford, District V President, who helped to provide local teacher volunteers. The winners are posted on the FSMTA website and will be recognized in our next newsletter. We will be continuing the policy that concerto students will not be permitted to have their own teacher as accompanist. The next FSMTA Student Competitive Event is tentatively scheduled for May 8-9, 2009 at a location to be determined in District VI. Vice-President of FSMTA Non-Competitive Events Tim Murphy reported 1718 students enrolled in the 2008 Student Day. The following certificates were awarded: Achievement-1418, Progress- 132, Performance-12, and Theory-32. There were 783 State Honors medals awarded. All 2009 District Student Day packets were available at the Student Activities Meeting on Thursday. There are 51 handbooks available at this time. Since October, Barbara Schaap and Genesis Eaves, both from District VI, have been approved for DSD judging.

FSMT Foundation President Millicent Callobre presented the report of her activities since October 21, 2007. The Wednesday evening Foundation Gala was a wonderful event including a cocktail hour, buffet dinner and entertainment by the Gainesville English Country Dancers and Baroque Musicians. Those attending the Gala were invited to join the dancers and we were treated to learning the choreography of four of the dances. There were 25 attendees. Approximately $500 was raised at the Gala and $75 in raffle money. Ms. Callobre then highlighted the donations made to FSMTF since the Winter Board Meeting. A new category for donations began with this year’s Gala and Conference called the Foundation Friends. This will include anyone who has made a yearly donation of $20 to FSMTF as a foundation friend. These funds will help support FSMTA-sponsored, non-endowed awards. These donors, including those attending the Gala, will be mentioned in our newsletter. The Board voted at the 2008 Winter Board Meeting to award $150 to each winner of the new MTNA Senior Piano Duet Event and to increase the Local President’s Community Service Award to $200. FSMT Foundation Treasurer In the absence of Bill Jennings, Millicent Callobre delivered the following information from the Treasurer’s report. The report covers from October 2007 to May 31, 2008. The total income received is $9701.00. Awards issued totaled $4835. The total balance in the Endowment accounts now is $120,708.60. At the Wednesday Foundation Board meeting, the Board voted to put $114,000 of that $120,708.60 into a 3 year CD at an interest rate of 4.25%. The projected difference is to be used for the operating expenses and awards. At the end of December, the projected funds are transferred from FSMTA to FSMTF. PRESENTATION OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS Chairman, Mark Repasky presented the Leroy Greenspan Award to Nora Hansen from the Panama City Area. Tanya Brooks accepted the plaque and state and county certificates on her behalf. There were no applicants for the Local President’s Award. Ms. Kilts then asked that we encourage the teachers in our associations to consider students to participate in these community service awards. FSMTA WEBMASTER REPORT Webmaster, AmyTuron highlighted updates to our FSMTA website. The FSMTA Official Directory is on the website and will no longer be printed. It will be updated regularly and be in three parts: (1)Bylaws of FSMTA & Foundation, (2)Handbook, and (3)Membership Directory. If any student winner names and pictures are to be posted on our website, please make sure that parents have signed the release forms. NECROLOGY REPORT Becky Barlar read the names of three FSMTA members who have passed away since our last annual conference. Ms. Barlar then asked the attendees to stand for a moment of silence in honor of these colleagues and friends.
