FRIDAY
FLASH FLOODS
s Above, river water overflows onto Salmon River Road and above right, the fast flowing river laps to the top of Salmon River Bridge. Wednesday’s heavy rainfall was expected to cause extremely high flows into Thursday, placing Salmon River on the Flood Warning list. Peak flows are forecast in the 50-year to 100-year record flow range. Prior to the rain, several days of warm weather accelerated the snow melt. For more information, visit: www.bcrfc.env.gov.bc.ca Link to: ‘River Forecast Centre’ and ‘Flood Warnings/Advisories’

wo festivals will cross paths this weekend. It’s the 15th annual Word on the Lake Festival for readers and writers all this weekend, and also the Salty Dog weekend that is geared for the keenest of cyclists. The Salty Dog Street Fest runs from 10 to 3 Saturday in Downtown. Family oriented events include petting zoo, face painting, bike parade at 11, pie eating contest, BC’s largest bike swap, and street performers and musicians playing all day. Sunday is the main event with some 400 hardy cyclists of all ages competing in four level races from Junior Salty Pup to the grueling 6-hour Enduro. Meanwhile, back at the Prestige, there will be talks about lofty ideas, both real and fictional. The Café Lit Friday night is open to the public and will be great fun. Oh yes, next weekend will be the 100th year of the Falkland Stampede. n w Sister duo Bethany and Erin Hiebert will play at The Hive on Saturday.

hen Nick and Jane Parsons retired to Gleneden from their Dawson Creek farm they brought with them a most dependable hybrid potato that Nick calls “Prairie Sunset”. About 12 years ago Nick planted a half acre of Yukon Golds and Red Pontiacs for the Dawson Creek soup kitchen and food bank. He was delighted to find a crop displaying yellow and red blended skin. “We saved all the seed for the following year and the new potatoes produced the same red and yellow skin.” Nick said in all those years he didn’t find a single scabby potato, nor any blight or disease, and the hybrid is an excellent yielder, good keeper, and ideal for all meal preparations.

O Lordy, Grant me the wisdom to catch all of my typos before the paper is THE printed. I also pray that Grant WORDY Lawrence will DOZEN not be terribly n Grant Lawrence, left, upset when is among the dozen he reads the presenters at this wrong last month’s Word on name attached the Lake Festival / 5 to his photo on last week’s front cover. I must have been thinking of another Grant that I have much respect for when I typed that. But anyways, the above patch is how it was supposed to read. Welcome all to the Shuswap’s Writers Festival with its 12 excellent writers, such as Grant, and many more aspiring writers. Enderby Arts Council is calling for artisans to sign up for the Enderby Arts Festival July 28. There is space for 45 vendors, plus the Grant Russell stage for some fine musicians. There's the three billboards outside Ebbing Missouri movie, and now there's four billboards ebbing just outside downtown Salmon Arm. Sample Support letter To:
[email protected] Honourable Rob Fleming Minister of Education PO Box 9045 Stn Prov Govt Victoria, BC V8W 9E2
Dear Minister Fleming: Subject: School District #83 Proposed Sale of former Salmon Arm Elementary Last week I attended an information meeting presented by Mr. Mike McKay, appointed Trustee for the School Board of District 83, about the proposed sale of this building. This building was the former Salmon Arm Elementary, until 2003, when it was closed. The School District then leased it to the Aspiral Youth Partners Association who works closely with the Ministry of Children and Family Development. The building was then renamed the Downtown Activity Centre. Aspiral has rented/leased space to various other community groups, such as the Shuswap Kids Club which offers daycare for over 80 children. It is very difficult to find rental/lease space in our community. So this is an important gathering place for many groups in our community. This building was built in 1922 and is also valued as a heritage building. As such, it has been placed on the City of Salmon Arm’s Community Heritage Register. At the meeting last week, Mr. McKay advised that the building and property will be offered for sale, in a bid process, with the bids closing in early July. The lease has been extended for Aspiral and the other tenants until the end of December. Mr. McKay advised that no further lease extensions would be given, even if there is not a successful bidder on the property. He advised that the School Board is not obliged to take the highest bid or any bid for that matter. At the meeting, many expressed concern about this short timeline. However, Mr. McKay advised that since the lease expires “on his watch”, that it is incumbent on him to take action. Mr. McKay is appointed, not elected by the people of Salmon Arm, so I believe that he does not represent the people of Salmon Arm. The purpose of my letter is to request that you to consider an extension on the lease of the Aspiral Youth Partners and the other tenants, from December 2018 until June 30, 2019 and to also delay the sale of the building to this time as well. This would allow Aspiral Youth Partners to raise the necessary funds to allow them to make a reasonable bid for the purchase of the building and property or to try to find other premises. If you feel you cannot do this, then I request that you at least delay the sale until the new School Board Trustees are elected on October 20, 2018. Yours truly, Pat Kassa

Information & Feedback Session on Downtown Activity Centre
n May 2 • 6:30 pm at the DAC Background: n October 2015, the board received approval by the Minister of Education to initiate proceedings for the sale of the DAC. At that time, the board decided not to sell the property (this building was closed as an elementary school in 2003). Currently, much of the building is leased as well as being home to the Salmon Arm Storefront program. While it is fully utilized, it is no longer justifiable for the school district to continue using operating funds to keep the building operating. The district’s draft plan, which will be shared in more detail at the meeting, includes: r Providing information; gathering and reviewing feedback from the meeting; and preparing the documents necessary if the sale process is to proceed; r Repurposing part of the main floor at DESC to facilitate Storefront School students and staff; r Taking the steps required to make a capital program request to the Ministry for a new elementary school in downtown Salmon Arm. Funds from current property sales would contribute to such a project. The District owns an appropriate site for an elementary school on the field directly behind the DESC. (Please note to renovate the DAC, and bring it to current building standards so it could be used as a school, are estimated at more than $8 million.)
