Sights on Flight 370

S

AS grad David Shea, vice president of engineering for the firm that helped locate the Franklin expedition and an Avro Arrow model, is now participating in one of this decade’s biggest global mysteries. What happened to Flight MH370? The Newfoundland-based Kraken Sonar was contracted to apply its advanced sonarequipped autonomous underwater vehicle in the search for the plane that vanished into the Indian Ocean in 2014. David Shea rrr The proposed Rail-Trail between Sicamous and Armstrong took a giant step forward this week. The Regional Districts of North Okanagan and Columbia Shuswap successfully concluded purchase of the abandoned CP Rail corridor. Municipal councils, Splatsin Band, Shuswap Trail Alliance, Armstrong-Spallumcheen Trails Society, and North Okanagan Historical Society have been working with the Regional Districts and CP Rail to make this happen. The ultimate dream is to connect this corridor to the Okanagan Rail Trail. What a great day that will be! n

w Students at Salmon Arm Storefront School worked with mentor / author Wendy Morton to produce another booklet in the Elder Project series. The words of local indigenous elders or ‘knowledge keepers’ were turned into poems for the book. One of the elders interviewed - carver and educator John Sayers - created the figures that are featured on the book’s cover, shown above. Magical dreams

T

he Kamloops Symphony is in town tonight, and they’re bringing along some of the magic of Vienna. It is also a good night

to daydream about a future performing arts centre. Next Saturday is the first in a series of flea markets at the Downtown Activity Centre in support of this dream. See flyer inside.

rrr The name ‘Blind Bay Blues Club’ rolls off the tonque like an old Mississipp John Hurt song. Musician Chris Emery is inviting blues fans to join the new club for jam sessions at Blind Bay Hall. The next one is 7 pm, Jan. 23. Drop-in fee is $5. Chris, 675-2865. rrr It has been a while since Roots and Blues hosted community concerts during the off season. So it’s great news that Festival organizers are bringing back Irish Mythen for a special concert Feb. 14. Tickets are now on sale at the new Festival office on 5th Ave. SW. n

chooses a colour of the year. And sometimes — like last year with all the off-whites — their choices mirror what the public is asking for. But 2018? Well, the colours range from Utra Violet to Caliente to Black Flame. (Or, purple, red and black.) Every time a new colour is forecast by the major color forecaster, Pantone, we can almost miraculously find it in the cushion selection at Winners, the bedding sets at Bed, Bath and Beyond, area rugs, sofas, and lamps. How does that happen? It’s orchestrated. We know that Pantone’s colour of the year is sent out to the manufacturing world quite a while before the announcement. That’s so manufacturers can be ready to supply. “Colour,” says Sue Wadden, marketing director at Sherwin-Williams, “ acts as a guide in design, and our role .. is to help educate on what’s out there.” I know it sounds pessimistic, but that statement says, to me, that there is a real connection between what the consumers are offered for sale, and what the colour forecasters say the colour of those items should be. So, how are these colours chosen? One expert said she looked at Pinterest to get a feel for what consumers are looking at. Another walked down a few cosmetic isles in large department stores. A few years ago, Pantone’s colour chooser let slip that her inspiration for the pale pink and pale blue colors of the year were from the dead flowers in her garden. One expert worked in an office by herself, developing new colours. She took them to a board for discussion and vote - and that is how the colours were chosen. But generally, it is a labourious process. Benjamin Moore’s Andrea Magno says, “We spend months researching and attending design shows and picking up cues and influences from different industries, including fashion, art, and even politics. Then the next step is bringing that information back and determining what the common threads are between these different disciplines and areas of the world.” Con’t next page w

wo popular Shuswap pubs were hit with fires during the Christmas season. The historic Copper Island Pub at Scotch Creek was totally destroyed, and Off the Beat Pub (formerly Hideaway) will be closed for the season as its recovers from heavy smoke and water damage. And speaking of local pubs, spots like the Barley Station and the B’s dining room in the casino present themselves well for family dining, but liquor laws do not permit children to dine with their parents. In the meantime, Lakeside Bowling is promoted as a place geared for good family fun, but the booze side of its business proved to be problematic at times during this past holiday season. There were serious complaints heard from young families about rowdy displays of behaviour during the evening hours. Hopefully, staff will deal with this for the future because bowling is good fun. n

w Submitted by Sarah Weaver: Overhead signs are needed to indicate directions for drivers on turn lanes and straight- thru lanes. Inconsistencies at key intersections are confusing, and with gravel and snow on the streets, drivers cannot see the markings. Here are examples: • Northbound / southbound traffic 10th St SW and TCH • Northbound and southbound traffic at Shuswap St / TCH • Northbound / southbound at 30th St SE / TCH. At some intersections the left lane is for left turning only(30th St/ SE northbound); at others, for left turns AND straight-thru. w Submitted by Anonymous In some public washrooms it is not clear how to secure the door from the inside, leaving the user anxious that somebody is going to open the door while seven others walk by. The Uptown SASCU is one example. A little sign instructing how to lock door would be most appreciated.
