Tunes from favorite movies performed by Naoko Nakagawa (soprano), Yoshie Ueno (flute), and Satoshi Kanazawa (piano). Yoshie Ueno received her Master’s degree with the rank of “highest distinction” from Tokyo University of the Arts and was awarded first prize in both The Tokyo Music Competition and The Japan Woodwind Competition. Naoko Nakagawa, a graduate of Tokyo University of the Arts made her debut as Masha in “A Feast in the Time of the Plague” at the little OPERA theatre of ny and has worked with Martina Arroyo Foundation and Amore Opera. Composer of classical and contemporary music, Satoshi Kanazawa was a recipient of fellowships awarded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the government of Japan and the NYFA Artists Fellowship/Gregory Millard Fellow.

New York Concert Review, on Yukiko Tanaka’s solo debut recital at Carnegie Weill Recital Hall, December 2005: “In short, a model performance.” Originally from Tokyo, Ms. Tanaka has been active as a piano recitalist, soloist with orchestras, and chamber musician performing in the U.S., Canada, Spain, Hungary, and Japan. She received a scholarship to Brooklyn College (CUNY), earning a Master’s Degree in piano performance. In 2012, she completed her Diploma in Spanish Piano at Academia Marshall-Granados in Barcelona. Message from the Director This fall we celebrated 96 years of service with the retirements of: Bill Guiton, Head of Reference; Carole Watson, Head of Technical Services; and Senior Library Assistants, Diane Clark and Gloria Meyers. We also welcomed new staff members: Samira Fayazi, ESL coordinator; Ellen Lee, Head of Reference and Morris Balacco, Head of Collection Development. ESL Program

Library Museum Passes

Passes include admission to the Frick Collection, Intrepid, Museum of the City of NY, NY Historical Society and Yogi Berra Museum. Passes require $25 cash deposit and a Fort Lee Library Card. Coming in early 2017: more museums to be added including the Guggenheim, Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and Children’s Museum of Manhattan. The art of Chinese paper cuts may date back to second century C.E. Judy Manton will display part of her private collection of intricate paper cuts collected during her 30 visits to China.

NY based Japanese artists express in different media the dangers for a country susceptible to earthquakes, like Japan who has nuclear power plants. Participating artists: Fujiwara, Kenji Kojima, Keiko Koshimitsu, Kunio Iizuka, Kazumi Nagakura, Aiko Aoyagi, H. Young Fort Lee artist, currently in the 2nd grade at School #3, Artur Napreev-Gromov has been drawing and painting from a very young age. The family exhibit will include artwork by Artur’s 95 yearold great grandmother, Polina Gromova and artist/ interior designer mother, Arina Gromova.

Artists from over 49 countries with diverse backgrounds, charged with creating a conceptual and relevant work, will exhibit photography, watercolor, inks, and acrylics demonstrating how the multimedia process differs from artist to artist. Violinist, Ok Sil Joanne Kim received her B.M. from HanYang University, Seoul, Korea (violin performance) and her M.M. from Combs College, Philadelphia, PA. She has organized concerts for orphans in Korea, performed in China and is on the faculty of Bergen Academy of Music. Guitarist, Kenji Haba received his M.M. at Manhattan School of Music (guitar performance) and has premiered over 20 pieces of music for performing guitar throughout the United States and Japan. Works by Piazzolla, Gardel, Monti, and Pujol will be included.

Judy Manton will show items from her private collection along with a PowerPoint and lecture highlighting traditional Chinese art forms: paper cuts, batiks, embroidery, woodprints, shadow puppets, wood carving, stone sculpture and peasant paintings. An adjunct professor of cross-cultural studies at Fairleigh Dickinson University for 26 years, Judy has visited China over 30 times, leading tours and educating village English teachers on new methods of learning under the auspices of the Zigen Fund. Presentation is suitable for children as well as adults. Additional treasures from Judy’s private collection will be on exhibit in The Gallery, January & February.
