Course Description Forestry and Environmental Conservation is a two-year program designed for students that are interested in careers which involve being outdoors. This course is intended to provide students with knowledge and skills required for various careers within the fields of Forestry and Environmental Conservation including Forester, Forest Technician, Wildlife Technician, Environmental Conservation Officer, Forest Ranger, Logger, Log Scaler, etc. Students will have the opportunity to work with professionals from local industries. The program also prepares students that are interested in furthering their education by introducing them to colleges that offer related degree majors.

Units of Instruction

All programs include a variety of classroom instruction methods, which may include: lecture, class discussion, guest speakers, demonstrations, projects, group work, computer research, etc. Each program also includes a variety of hands-on practice, which may include: labs, live work, field work, field trips, college visits, internships, etc.

First-Year • Plant Physiology and Anatomy • Dendrology • Shop and Field Safety • Forest Hand Tools • Chainsaw Safety, Operation, and Maintenance • Basic Heavy Equipment Operation • Basic Surveying • Orienteering • Wildlife Management and Ecology • Forest Health and Protection • Arboriculture (including tree pruning and planting techniques) • Recreation Management and Outdoor Preparation • Career and Financial Management

Second-Year • Professional Development • Tree Felling • Soils • Timber Harvesting and Best Management Practices • Forest Ecology • Silviculture • Forest Measurements and Inventory • Log Scaling • Milling and Lumber Production • First Aid/CPR Training • OSHA 10 Hour Training • NYS Logger Training • Internship

Hands-on Activities

Students will have the opportunity to work in the field with multiple local professionals including foresters, forest technicians and wildlife biologists. Students will also have the opportunity to utilize chainsaws, equipment and forest hand tools for a variety of projects including timber harvesting, tree pruning, tree planting, lumber production, and forest measurements. During their junior year, students will be responsible for raising Ring-necked pheasants.

Internship

Students will have an opportunity in their senior year to participate in a five week internship. Students will be able to apply what they have learned in their program to a real-life on the job setting. Examples of prior internship sites include: • • •

Work Ethic Students receive a daily work ethic grade based on the following: • • • • • • • • • •

Students will be graded on authentic hands-on tasks and skills related to the program. Some examples of Skills Tasks for this course are: • • • • •

Tree Identification Chainsaw Operation Equipment operation including skidsteer and skidder Sawmill setup and operation Compass and map, GPS use

Students will be graded on written assignments, quizzes, tests, and projects.

Final Exam

Students will also take a comprehensive final exam counting as twenty percent (20%) of their final school grade.

OSHA 10 Hour First Aid CPR NYS Logger Training Various Tree Care Industry Association (TCIA) Certificates

Credits Successful students will earn four (4) high school credits per school year. These may include the following integrated academic credits: • •

Work boots While working in the field: • Jeans or other work appropriate pants. • Safety Glasses • Safety Hat/Helmet • Work clothes/cold weather apparel- During cold weather, students must have at their disposal, cold weather apparel that is appropriate for out-door work.

Classroom Rules/Late Work Policy

Students will be advised of all classroom rules and late work policies within the first few days of instruction. Students will also be provided with the code of conduct outlining general building rules.
