FOOD SERVICE INFORMATION FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2016/2017 Canton Central School District’s School Meals Meet Tough New Nutrition Standards: As Canton Central School students return to school this fall, they’ll find healthy new choices in their school cafeterias. We will be serving school meals that meet tough new federal nutrition standards, ensuring that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school. School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains, and they must meet strict limits for saturated fat and portion size. School lunches will meet the following standards: Age-appropriate calorie limits Larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce) A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free) More whole grains And less sodium We’re always working to offer our students healthier and tastier choices. In addition to meeting the nutrition standards, we’re also offering locally grown foods, foods from our very own School Garden. School meals are a great value and a huge convenience for busy families! School Meal Prices: Like all of us, the school is not immune to the escalating costs in food. We make a concerted effort to keep our school breakfasts and lunches as reasonably priced as possible. This year’s prices:

Full Price Milk (All Schools): Breakfast (All Schools): Banford Elementary School Lunch: Middle and High School Lunch: Staff Lunch:

Breakfast and lunch meals are provided at no cost to students eligible for free meals. Breakfast/Lunch Payment Services: As an alternative to paying cash every day, you may use our convenient, easy and secure online prepayment service to deposit money into your child’s school meal account at any time. This service also allows parents to view your child’s account balance through a web site called MyNutrikids.com. Parents will have the ability to print out a copy of their child’s eating history report. This history report will show you all dates and times that your child has purchased a breakfast and/or lunch or a snack within the past thirty (30) days. You may also place a block on your child’s account by contacting that Food Service Manager. To access these services: Simply go to the district web site at www.ccsdk12.org Click on the Food Service link. Click on MyNutrikids.com link. From this site, you will create your account and add money to your child’s school meal account. All you need is your child’s name, student ID number and school zip code. Healthy Choice Offerings for Classroom Parties: If your child has an upcoming special occasion let us take the hassle out of your busy schedule. All you need to do is contact the Food Service Department and let us know what you would like to order with a delivery date and we will take care of the rest. Contact information: Mrs. Blue Jay Fenlong @ 386-8561, extension 5410, or [email protected]. You can find a list of our healthy choice offerings under “Classroom Parties”, along with a price list, under “Lunch Menu” on the District’s website at www.ccsdk12.org. Free and Reduced meals: We strongly encourage you to fill out the free/reduced lunch application even if you feel you may not qualify. Please feel free to contact Blue Jay Fenlong, Food Service Manager, at 386-8561, extension 5410, or the Business Manager at extension 4207, with any questions you may have regarding the eligibility guidelines or the Application itself.

Do I need to fill out an application for each child? No. Use one Free and Reduced Price School Meals Application for all students in your household. We cannot approve an application that is not complete, so be sure to fill out all required information. Return the completed application to: Mrs. Blue Jay Fenlong, Food Service Manager, Canton Central School District, 99 State Street, Canton, New York 13617. Should I fill out an application if I recently received a letter saying my children are approved for free meals? Please read the letter you received carefully and follow the instructions. If you have questions, please contact the Food Service Manager at (315) 386-8561, extension 5410. Can foster children get free meals? Yes, any foster child in the household is eligible for free meals regardless of income. Can homeless, runaway, and migrant children get free meals? Yes, children who meet the definition of homeless, runaway, or migrant qualify for free meals. Please contact Mrs. Kelly Glasgow who is the District’s Liaison for Homeless Children and Youth, to see if they qualify.

FREE AND REDUCED PRICE MEALS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (continued): Do I need to fill out another application if my child’s application was approved last year? Yes. You must send in a new application unless the school already informed you that your child is eligible for the new school year. I get WIC. Can my child(ren) get free meals? Children in households participating in WIC may be eligible for free or reduced price meals. Please fill out a free/reduced price meal application.

Will the information I give be checked? Yes, and we may also ask you to send written proof.

If I don’t qualify now, may I apply later? Yes, you may apply at any time during the school year. For example, children with a parent or guardian who becomes unemployed may become eligible for free and reduced price meals if the household income drops below the income limit.

What if I disagree with the school’s decision about my application? Please contact Mrs. Fenlong at (315) 386-8561, extension 5410. You also may ask for a hearing by calling or writing to: Mr. William A. Gregory, Superintendent of Schools, 99 State Street, Canton, New York 13617, whose telephone number is (315) 386-8561, extension 4202.

May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S. citizen? Yes. You or your child(ren) do not have to be U.S. citizens to qualify for free or reduced price meals.

Who should I include as members of my household? You must include all people living in your house, related or not (such as grandparents, relatives, or friends) who share income and expenses. You must include yourself and all children living with you. If you live with other people who are economically independent (for example, people who you do not support, who do not share income with you or your children, and who pay their own expenses), do not include them.

What if my income is not always the same? List the amount that you normally receive. For example, if you normally make $1,000 each month, but you missed some work last month and only made $900, put down that you made $1,000 per month. If you normally get overtime, include it, but do not include it if you only work overtime sometimes. If you have lost a job or had your hours or wages reduced, use your current income.

We are in the military – do we include our housing allowance as income? If you get an off-base housing allowance, it must be included as income. However, if you are living in government housing, do not include it as income.

My spouse is deployed to a combat zone – is his/her combat pay counted as income? No, if the combat pay is received in addition to his/her basic pay because of his/her deployment and it wasn’t received before he/she was deployed, combat pay is not counted as income.

My family needs more help. Are there other programs we might apply for? To find out how to apply for food stamps or other assistance benefits, contact your local assistance office or call 1-800-342-3009.
