What is the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and how does my household qualify? The NSLP is a program for children to receive meal benefits for a reduced price or for free. A household qualifies for this program based on its income level relative to household size.

Where can I get an application to see if my household qualifies under the NSLP? Applications are being sent home with all students the first week of school and will also be available in the main office throughout the school year. If your household participated in the NSLP last year, you still need to complete an application to receive benefits this school year. Please return one application per household as soon as possible. Applications must be returned before Friday, September 8th to ensure no gaps in benefits to the following address: Wilmington High School Attn: Jodie Havert 300 Richardson Place Wilmington, OH 45177 I received a letter in the mail in early August saying my children were already approved for free meals via Direct Certification. Do I still need to fill out a Free & Reduced Lunch Application? No. If there were any children currently in your household that were not listed on the letter please call Jodie Havert at 937-283-7250.

If my child’s application has been approved for the NSLP free or reduced lunch benefit does that include benefits for breakfast as well? Yes. If your child has been approved for free or reduced lunch, your child is also approved for free or reduced breakfast. Breakfast is served daily in all school buildings in the District beginning 20 minutes before the school day starts.

Where can I find a breakfast and lunch menu? Menus are sent home with elementary students the week before the new month begins. Secondary students can pick one up in the front office or in the cafeteria. Parents can also view the menu on the district website under the “Departments” tab choose “Food Service” and click on menu.

How do I know what my child’s lunch account balance is? Parents can call their child’s cafeteria for this information or on payforit.net. Low balance letters will be sent bi-weekly (Tuesdays in backpacks, Fridays via USPS) to parents of elementary students whose child has a negative account balance. Cafeteria phone numbers: WHS/ROBMS 283-7447 Denver Elementary 283-7594 Holmes Elementary 283-7743 East End Elementary 283-7651

Why did my child receive an alternate meal for lunch? WCS allows elementary students to borrow up to $10.00 for breakfast and lunch purchases. Once this limit is reached, the child will receive a complimentary alternate meal consisting of a cheese sandwich, a fruit and/or veggie and a milk for lunch. This will continue until the borrowed monies have been paid back in full. Parents are responsible for monitoring their child’s lunch account balances throughout the year. Middle and high school students can charge up to $3.00 (one lunch), each subsequent meal the student will be given an alternate meal until the charges are paid in full. Alternate meals will be given free of charge to students who have a zero or negative balance on their account.

How do I put money on my child’s food service account? A check is the preferred method for prepayment. For elementary children, please include cash or check in a sealed envelope with your child’s first and last name and his or her teacher’s name. If you don’t want to send the money in with your child, you can bring the payment in to the front office of your child’s school. The District cannot reimburse you for claims of lost cash payment without a receipt. An account report can be requested at any time from your school’s cafeteria to show receipt of payment to your child’s account. You can also visit www.payforit.net and make a credit card payment online. There is a link from the district website (www.wilmington.k12.oh.us) under the “Parents” tab.

What information do I include on the check? Make checks payable to Wilmington City Schools – Food Service and include your child’s name and ID number in the memo section. If you are paying for more than one child on the same check please include all names and ID numbers with how much money you want going to each child’s account in the memo section.

My child has a food allergy. How do I handle this? Food allergy substitutions (including milk allergies) require a note from a certified doctor to be on file with the food service department. A doctor’s note should be sent in to the cafeteria at the beginning of the school year. A doctor’s note is current for one school year. A new doctor’s note is required every year. A memo will be placed on your child’s account to remind the cafeteria of the allergy.

USDA is an equal opportunity employer.
