Unit Title: Comparing/Adding 2-Digit Numbers and Mentally Add/Subtract 10

Grade Level: 1

Time Frame: 18 Days

Designed by: Michelle McElhinny, Jennifer Bradley, Amanda Bratcher, Kristina Fleck Resources by: Michelle McElhinny, Jennifer Bradley, Amanda Bratcher, Kristina Fleck, Michelle King, Mary Price, Laura Devinney

CCSS - Math Standards: 1.NBT.1: Count to 120, starting at any number less than 120. In this range, read and write numerals and represent a number of objects with a written numeral. 1.NBT.3: Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <. 1.NBT.4: Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a onedigit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten. 1.NBT.5: Given a two-digit number, mentally find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used. 1.NBT.6: Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

STAGE 1 – DESIRED RESULTS Transfer Students will be able to independently use their learning to… Solve a variety of everyday problems by reasoning, communicating, and showing how numbers can be compared and related to each other.

Meaning ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS Students will understand that…   

  

Numbers can be represented in a variety of different ways. A Number has meaning based upon the place value of its digits. Recognizing the sequential pattern can help when reading, writing and counting numbers. The decade numbers to 100 are built on groups of ten. Place value can be used to compare and order numbers. They can add/subt 10 and explain why the processthey used was appropriate, and can support it with reasons and evidence. They can add/subt in a variety of different ways but some are more effective and efficient than others are. Adding and subtracting two‐digit numbers without regrouping can be achieved by adding or subtracting numbers first from the ones column and then the tens column. Adding and subtracting two digit numbers can be solved by lining the numbers up vertically in order to add or subtract the ones and tens place values. Place value can help determine which numbers are larger or smaller than other numbers. Comparing two 2-digit numbers is based on the meaning of the tens and ones digits, using <, >, or = to record the results of their comparisons.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS  

 

 

Why is counting by 10’s important? How does the value of a digit change when its position in a number changes? How can you mentally find 10 more or 10 less? How can I use place value to compare and order numbers?’ How do you add 2-digit numbers? How do you subtract 2-digit numbers?

Acquisition Students will know…  

 

   

  

How to read, write, and represent numbers to 120. That the place-value system is a way of writing numbers to show the value of each digit. Patterns on the hundred chart That numbers 10, 20,30, 40,50,60, 70, 80, 90 refer to one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, or nine tens (and 0 ones). How to count by 10’s How to mentally add and subtract 10. How to explain how they added or subtracted 10. The choose the most effective strategy when solving addition and subtraction facts. How to compare and order numbers to 100 How to add 2-digit numbers. How to subtract 2-digit numbers.

Students will be able to… 

 

  

Count, read, and write numbers to 120 in different ways Use base ten cubes to show addition and subtraction problems. Compare and order numbers to 120 Record the results of comparisons with <,> or = symbols. Add or Subtract multiples of 10 in the range of 10-90 Identify ten more or ten less than. Mentally find 10 more or 10 less than a number without having to count Explain their problem‐solving steps when adding and subtracting two digit numbers.

STAGE 2 - EVIDENCE Assessment Evidence

STAGE 3 – LEARNING PLAN Key Vocabulary digit, base ten, hundreds, tens, ones, value, mental math, compare, bigger, smaller, same, greatest, least, greater than, less than, equal to, column

Student Rubric Show students the “2-Digit Numbers” rubric for Unit 4 on Day 1. This will help them understand all that they must be able to do by the end of the unit. On the last day of the unit, students can complete the rubric to evaluate their own learning.

Teacher Checklists Use the teacher checklists found at the end of this document throughout each part of this unit. Teacher makes observations while students are working on a designated task and gives checks for each area. This document will guide your instructions, intervention groups, and assist in filling out report cards.

Hook You may or may not have a hook each day. As you begin your lesson, find a way to engage your learners with a song, poem, dance, etc. BE CREATIVE!

Mental Math Problems of the Day Each day do Mental Math Problems (choose the time of day that works best for you). Use addition and subtraction facts that include addition and subtraction within 20 and also finding 10 more and 10 ten less.

Resource List Use the resource list at the end of this document to choose activities for the hook, mini lesson, and student engagement based on the topic of the day.

Student Practice As students practice skills each day, activities can be differentiated to meet students’ academic abilities and learning styles.
