Fiscal Year June 2017 Annual Financial Report for Saint Athanasius Parish The good news is that we as a Parish community continue to meet our day to day operating expenses while continuing to support expanded ministries and part-time Pastoral support. We were able to replace the church’s decades old boiler and original hot water heater, repair the rectory bathrooms, and add bookcases to the library for a total of $37,667, which bumped up the overall property costs for the parish to $105,699. [Note: all three projects were paid during the summer and fall of 2016, which is technically the Fiscal 2017 budget.] The offertory collection continues to be the primary source of funding and grew year over year by an additional $4,129. There was also $30,641 in one time bequests. Note that bequests were actually down from $73,641 in the previous year when we were very fortunate to benefit from one time estate bequests. Sustaining the offertory is our most pressing revenue need. More efficient heating and reasonable oil prices continue to be very favorable to our property costs. Our tithe or “tax” contribution to the Archdiocese for broader program services is $38,354 and, adjusted for timing, represents 10% of the offertory. Employee compensation and related benefit costs were reduced by $26,767, though net expenses in total rose by $12,116, again, due to the additional property costs noted above. The bottom line is that we finished the fiscal year (ended June 2017) in line with the planned budget and with a net income of $13,043. In terms of providing a current, mid-budget update of our financial condition at calendar year end (December 2017), our financial savings increased by $35,000 compared to this time last year, with the trends that led to these additional savings continuing. The Christmas Faire, bottle/can collection, and other social activities all continue to play an important part in financially sustaining our Parish community. The steady budget trend allowed St. Athanasius to continue to not solicit funds through either a fall “Grand Annual” or an emergency fund raising effort in order to support capital/building budget items. Fr. Colarusso would like to acknowledge everyone who continues to maintain their commitment to the increased offertory campaign in 2016. In order to meet our operating budget, we need the offertory and one time gifts to continue at the same level as previous years, which will sustain a consistent revenue base. Please reach out to Fr. Colarusso if you can help with any one time donations, estate planning gifts, or stock donations. Any and all types of gifts and services are welcomed. Looking forward, the Finance Council has optimism that we at St. Athanasius Parish can continue to meet our day to day expenses. Caveats being that, again, we need continual commitment to both the increased offertory and one time gifts. Manageable operating costs such as compensation and maintenance related expenses continue to be aggressively controlled. However, similar to our own personal finances, some expenses such as heat, insurance, and retirement related costs are beyond the control of the Parish. Small capital projects or repairs can be funded from the operating budget, but we do not have the flexibility to support moderate capital improvement projects. Specifically, we have high priority capital projects that were deferred during the Capital Campaign that took place four years ago. The Parish Council, Finance Council, and Building Committee are currently assessing our capital priorities and you will be hearing more about these projects over the next two months with respect to window repair, a circular driveway with improved handicap accessibility, etc. In conclusion, the weekly offertory is our major source of revenue, so we need your continued support to be viable as a parish. Please consider the convenience and consistency of offertory Electronic Funds Transfers. Lastly, if you can help out a little more on a weekly basis, that would be greatly appreciated. Your financial support continues to be critical to sustaining both the stability and expanded parish outreach of the St Athanasius community. Thank you again for your generosity! Respectfully, Dino Cuscuna, Bob Ferrari, Joe McDonagh Saint Athanasius Parish Finance Council
