MONTHLY NEWSLETTER | FEBRUARY 2017

From the Pastor: These past Sundays our Faith Journey has brought us with Jesus to the Banks of the Jordan River (Baptism), to the House of Levi (Eating), the town of Capernaum (Healing), and the shore of the Sea of Galilee (Teaching). We have been walking where Jesus walked; even to a high mountain set apart, where in his Transfiguration we have seen Jesus in his glory. Like Jesus’ time in the wilderness, soon we too will be preparing ourselves for our Journey to Jerusalem. Lent is our preparation season. Let me highlight some of our stepping stones on the Path to Easter. Sunday, February 29 - Mardi Gras Sunday - Joining us will be Jay Meachum (trumpet), Wiley Porter (banjo), Dave Reid (clarinet) and Steve Griggs (helicon) to lead us in a special time of Dixieland Jazz. Tuesday, February 28 - Shrove Tuesday Pancake Dinner - In the spirit of Fat Tuesday we will be gathering for pancakes and sausage in the New Building. Invite a friend to dinner. Wednesday, March 1 - Ash Wednesday Service - At 7:00pm we will come together for a service of prayer and anointing as we begin our walk in faith with Jesus. Upon our path to Easter there will be special moments along the way for refreshment and fellowship. On Wednesday, March 15, we will gather from 5:30-7:00pm in the New Building for a special meal of pork loin, homemade mashed potatoes, green beans, buttermilk biscuits, apple and cinnamon dessert and sweet tea. All donations going towards our New Construction Fund. The next evening, Thursday, March 16, Mt Zion will be hosting a Town Hall Meeting with our sister churches within our Western NC Association. Joining us will be the Rev. Dr. Edward Davis our Southern Conference Minister. This promises to be a wonderful

gathering with our Association brothers and sisters in Christ. In our March Newsletter we will highlight our Holy Week events with Maundy Thursday Communion, Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday and Sunrise Service, Breakfast and 9:30am worship Easter morning. These days offer all of us “just a closer walk” with Jesus and with our church family. There are no solitary Christians. By our baptism we are called into the Body of Christ to dazzle and glow in God’s spirit. May God bless you and watch over you in the days ahead along our journey of faith.

Faithfully, Mark

T han k You Dear Folks, I was not only surprised, but very pleased , and quite overwhelmed when my “Meals on Wheels” lunch arrived Thursday, accompanied by a big pecan pie! I still find it hard to believe such unexpected thoughtfulness. Your pie is delicious, and such a treat. I am, and will be, enjoying every slice. Just one slice would have been nice, but a whole pie - my goodness! Thank you so much for your kindness. I’ll never forget. May God bless you all. With love and gratitude, Ruth Graham

Dear Members of Mt Zion Church, Thank you so much for the Food Lion gift card! It was so very much appreciated and needed during this time of loss. It’s amazing and wonderful too, to see believers come forward who don’t even know us and are willing to lend a helping hand! God bless you all from the bottom of our hearts! Robin and Hoss Tilley Thank you for all the cards, prayers, calls and other acts of kindness during my recent illness.

Joy Deal

Many, many, many thanks to Alan Cress for all the work he has done to the storage room on the third floor. Thank you for your generous gift in 2016 to support Main Street Mission of China Grove. Your gift allows us to continue our work feeding, clothing and giving a hand up to those who are in need in our community. Your continued prayers and support are the lifeline and strength of our mission as we serve our neighbors together. We are grateful for all you have done, and in your honor, we will continue to walk in the light and to be good stewards of your generosity. We send to you our heartfelt thanks. In serving together, Anne Corriher Thank you for all the prayers, cards, concerns and phone calls throughout my illness, stay in hospital and recovery. Billy D. Corriher Thank you for all the prayers, cards, concerns and phone calls and other acts of kindness throughout my illness. Nancy Carter We want to thank you for all your cards, calls and visits over the past month. We love our church family and could not have made it without your prayers. Gordon & Becky Drye A special word of thanks to our Pancake Team and to all who came out Wednesday for our tasty pancake and sausage dinner. What a wonderful time together it was for our church family. Thank you for your generous support of the ministries of your beloved Mt. Zion UCC. Together we raised $764.00 at our Pancake Dinner to go towards utility costs. Last Sunday’s Souper Bowl of Caring raised $239.50 in the soup pots and 211 cans & jars, 47 boxes/packets/bags and 7 hygiene items in the Boy Scout bags. What a wonderful church family we are in God’s name.

Congratulations to Kelly Corriher & Jay Chekansky who were married on December 16, 2016 in Asheville. Kelly is the daughter of Scott & Mary Corriher. Do you or anyone in your family have a new address, telephone number or email address? If so, please notify the Church Secretary as soon as possible with this new information. Mt. Zion Book Club

The Mt. Zion Book Club will meet March 13, 2017 at 3:00PM. We will be discussing the book, “Small Great Things” by Jodi Picoult. Ruth Jefferson is a labor and delivery nurse at a Connecticut hospital with more than twenty years’ experience. During her shift, Ruth begins a routine checkup on a newborn, only to be told a few minutes later that she’s been reassigned to another patient. The parents are white supremacists and don’t want Ruth, who is African American, to touch their child. The hospital complies with their request, but the next day, the baby goes into cardiac distress while Ruth is alone in the nursery. Does she obey orders or does she intervene? Ruth hesitates before performing CPR and, as a result, is charged with a serious crime. Kennedy McQuarrie, a white public defender, takes her case but gives unexpected advice: Kennedy insists that mentioning race in the courtroom is not a winning strategy. Conflicted by Kennedy’s counsel, Ruth tries to keep life as normal as possible for her family—especially her teenage son—as the case becomes a media sensation. As the trial moves forward, Ruth and Kennedy must gain each other’s trust, and come to see that what they’ve been taught their whole lives about others—and themselves—might be wrong. We would love for you to join us! If you have further questions, please contact Shelia Nance (704-857-1360)

Community To be in community is to listen to the poor and the hungry in our midst. Our goal at MSM is to bring those who we serve to the decision making table. Ed Loring speaks to this topic in a beautiful way. His words below are from his portion in the book “Called to Community, The life Jesus wants for his people”. “When we listen to the poor we drop the ideology that what one needs is a job. Rather we reduce the distance and stand and listen, as my wife Murphy Davis says, with “ears trained by scripture,” and respond with the simple and hospitable question “How may I be helpful?” That question rooted in love and openness re-creates the poor and makes them a subject of their own lives rather than an object of our programs. “How may I be helpful?” gives respect but demands engagement. The question of love and relationship gives empowerment and demands servanthood. The question is gospel: it is good news to the poor! We need each other. “How can I be helpful?” is a question that incarnates the love of God and that will change our lives as well as bring to an end to homelessness, hunger, and prisons as we know then in this land.” We are all threads woven together in the fabric we call community. This beautifully woven, but imperfect tapestry, is most beautiful when everyone is invited to weave. Anne Main Street Mission has ‘One Can Do More’ necklaces now!
