Regional Commissioner’s Report Welcome back to 2017. I hope where possible you had the opportunity to have a “good break” and recharged for an exciting 2017 Scouting year. I wish to pay special tribute to all exceptional committed volunteer leaders and adult helpers that participated in the State Cuboree held at Cataract Scout Park in early January. From all the reports and general feedback I have received, our youth members had a terrific Scouting experience. This is due only to the dedication of our leaders and if you were there may I congratulate you again for your inspirational leadership. Also held in January was our Scout Corroboree held at Camp Lostock. This event has been part of our Region tradition since the 1950’s. I was very fortunate to visit the event twice. Firstly with our new Chief Commissioner, Mr Neville Tomkins OAM who was “blown away” by the event and asked me to pass on his gratitude to all our fantastic leaders for the time and energy to make this event so special for all our youth members. He was particularly impressed to see leaders and youth members from North West, Sydney North and Greater Western Sydney Regions in attendance. I went back again another day to the Corroboree and wish to acknowledge Regional Commissioner Scouts, Bruce Leverton and his team. Well done guys. You put on a “great show” for all our youth members even despite very challenging hot weather requiring changing logistics. Nothing was problem and the event was delivered to its usual very high standard. It was commented to me recently by a senior leader that at times I write the same messages in my Bulletin articles. In fact “recycle the same ideas” were the exact words he used. Whilst I acknowledge it is true at times I write the same messages, in fact I suggest at times it is even necessary. I call it a repetitive confirmation and once that becomes a conviction, things start to happen and in fact get done. So in that light I hope you all have an exciting program mapped out for all youth members. Do you have immediate access to quality programs to excite your youth and even more importantly, want more to join and of course retain your current membership? If you tick the above boxes with a yes – great work and chances are you will continue to succeed. If you don’t and need help in particular with access to quality programs, please contact the Region Office and I assure you, you will receive hep “quickly”. It’s purely axiomatic that quality leadership and quality programs are the cornerstone of a successful group, section etc. The days of winging your programs are long over. Taken as a given if you don’t, youth members and parents have their eyes on the exit door. A bit harsh probably but, with increasing parental expectations including but not limited to costs, it is a simple reality. There of course is nothing new about any of the above message, to the contrary actually and no surprises to any experienced leaders out there but I will leave it to you to draw your own conclusions to how you shape up in that regard. Even a cursory analysis of some of our groups numbers will clearly demonstrate it is a message we need to go over and over again. I look forward to seeing you on the Scouting trail and if I don’t know you, please come up and introduce yourself, I look forward to meeting you.

Australia Day Awards We are proud that two of our Leaders/former Leaders have been recognised in today’s Australia Day Honours for their contribution to Scouting, and one of our youth members has been honoured.
Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) Keith Parry, • For service to the community, and to youth through Scouting Keith Parry gave extraordinary support to Scouting, over many years, including to the Newcastle and Hunter Area (now Hunter and Coastal Region) and to the Baden Powell Guild. Keith’s service includes: • State Leader, NSW Branch 1990-1993 • State Guildmaster, Baden Powell Guild NSW (2012-2014), Secretary since 2014, and Member since 1988 • State Chair, Convention Planning Committee, International Scout and Guild Fellowship 2014 • District Leader 1988-1992 • Leader, Teralba Venturers 1990s • Leader, Fennell Bay Troop 1980s.
Citizen of the Year (Wingham) Jillian Oliver Jillian Oliver has received the Citizen of the Year award for her lifetime of service to the community. As an active participant in the Girl Guides movement, Jillian has previously received the Baden Powell, Queens Guide and Boronia awards for her role as a Guide leader. She has been involved with the SES both in Sydney and the Manning Valley since 1995 and has attended several incidents such as the Thredbo landslide in 1997. During a 15 year career as a police officer, Jillian received the Police Medal for diligent and meritorious duty. While carrying out duties in 2010, a serious accident left her right arm injured. A medical condition developed which eventually led to amputation. Through determination, she reshaped her life while continuing work with Wingham Brush P and C, Wingham Scouts and Australian soldiers based overseas. Wingham Rotary Club president Peter Fotheringham summed up the privilege of awarding Jillian Citizen of the Year. “Her life achievements are an inspiration to us all and we wish her every success in her future activities.”

Joey Scout Report What a year it is going to be for Joey Scouts in Hunter and Coastal Region. We have heaps of events coming up for both the leaders and youth of our section. Keep your eyes on the Bulletin for updates and important information, such as when E1’s are posted, closing dates and any other info.
The Major events for youth are as follows: Big Day Out will have the Joeys explore Newcastle Museum and discover wonders with a science show, Newcastle and Hunter Region history presentation and fun and games in the supernova centre. This will be late term 1. GAS will see all sections converge on Glenrock again for our bi annual get together which will see most groups from across the region attending. It’s a great opportunity to expose your joeys to a relaxed camp environment and show them the challenges and fun that lies ahead within scouting.
For the leaders we also have two events coming up. The YPR is having some workshops in our Region to gain feedback and engage the us in the future of Scouting, this will be held in the first half of the year and is a perfect place to come along, learn and see what the Scouting of the future will be like. State Konara is also fast approaching hopefully everyone has saved the dates as we are expecting an awesome weekend this year with stacks of great ideas and helpful tips regarding being a Joey Scout leader and how to broaden your Joeys perspectives on the world. More information will be out very soon for all these events. E1’s will be up early February for big day out, with a link to register in the next article.

Scout Report CORROBOREE 2017 - WOW! Well we have just all returned from our Region Corroboree camp. The weather was great, we had a real mix of hot & then cool days and then a spot of rain. The activities were exciting and the Corroboree experience was the closest we can get to a Jamboree. We brought in several activities, these were; Camels, Bungi & Archery and complemented these with great District based activities. The District bases were all well supported and my congratulations go to the Scouts who received their Green Cords at the camp – well done. Our Saturday night entertainment was sensational, with David Jacob’s and the Inspira team providing an amazing closing ceremony, fireworks display and disco. JNN SCOUT TV, never stopped, with Cooky and his team covering everything, and then working 24/7 to put it all together, including a great spot on NBN News. The Chief Commissioner visited the camp & was amazed at the logistics, the great location & the way our leaders ran the camp. My sincere thanks go to Steve Pratt, Bill Brown, Louis Todd, Kevin Allen, Greg Allen, Gai Green, Deb Dickson, Peter Griffiths & Allan Kirkpatrick who helped me through another major successful event; their Admin & Welfare and Activity expertise is second to none. The Q-Store team under Daniel Cordell, once again harnessed the power of our Rovers to provide a terrific menu, that included the many special needs of our youth and leaders, churning through over 1200 loaves of bread, 1500 litres of milk, two tonne of fruit and vegies & 1100 steaks and schnitzels. To our Sub Camp Chiefs, Rod Keeble, Bruce Cooke, Jane Hogno, Mark Peters and their teams, a huge thankyou. The Activity team, with Ian Lockwood & Vicki Coles provided the usual high safety standard of traditional scouting entertainment. I look forward to seeing the many photos that I hope you can email to me, of the smiles and sometimes terror that that occurred this week. Finally thank-you to our Leaders & Venturers - without you it just wouldn’t have happened. Well now that Corroboree is over, please make sure you have a packed program for your Scouts to utilise all their new skills and experiences in the coming year.
ASM Congratulations to Callum Jackson from Cardiff, being awarded ‘The Australian Scout Medallion’. Our next major event is our Region Scout Rally on the 27th and 28th May at Myuna Bay.Please see updates on everything Scouting at Scoutreach & Patroltent websites. Keep up the great work you are all doing for your Scouts.

Venturer Scout Report Welcome back to Venturers. I hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and this looks like a wonderful year we have in front of us with exciting events and courses.
Region Venture 2016 Our Region Venture in December 2016 was by far the most successful and well received venture by our regional venturers, leaders and those who attended from outside our region. Our camp site overlooking the Sydney Harbour Bridge was one of the best locations in the world to have a Scouting event. I have included photos of the event. This event would not be possible without the support by the Regional Venturer Council, Rovers, Leaders and everyone else that helped in order to make this the biggest Venturer activity in the Hunter and Coastal Region for the year.
Venturer Website Our Venturer Regional website is now up and running. I wish to give a special thank you to Bryce Hoffmann DVSL who has taken the time to put this website together for the benefit of the Venturer section. Please check the above information yourself from the NSW 2017 Adult Training and Development Calendar as information changes from time to time and I recommend that as soon as you know of the course you seek to do send your paper work and money in and check that any pre course work is completed. Throughout 2017 can each unit arrange for at least one leader and one venturer to attend the District Venturer Council meetings so that all the current information from National, State, Region and District makes it to the units. The more that attend these meetings the better. If you are unsure of the meeting dates, location and times please contact your District Venturer Scout Leader (DVSL) who will be more than happy to take you through the information. Over the coming months I will publish the meeting details so everyone has access to it.

Know your Compass 1)
Scale Ruler: Used to measure distances on the map
2)
Magnifier: For helping to read details or in cluttered areas
3)
Index Line: This is the point where you
read off the bearing. Some models this is luminous. 4)
Direction of Travel Arrow: To
point the compass in the direction that you are travelling. 5)
North/South Orienting Lines: To
help you taking bearings from a map. 6)
Parallel Lines: These lines run parallel
with the direction of arrow line. They can be used when taking map bearings. 7) Compasses with a romer scale i.e. Silva Expedition 4
Compass Housing: A rotating dial
normally marked in degrees. 8)
Magnetic needle: The red half points
to magnetic north. 9)
Romer Scale: To help take grid
references. Be careful to use the correct scale.
10)
Stencil hole: Used in marking exact positions on the map.
All these part are on the Baseplate which allows you to line up features on the map. The rounded corners allow it to be held comfortable in the hand. Some models have silicon feet to stop it moving on the map.
