The Alyssa Arends  GPS Community Education Scholarship Fund

This scholarship program is made in memory of Alyssa Arends. Alyssa was 15 years old, a freshman at Grandville High School, when she passed away from complications relating to chemotherapy for treatment of Ewing’s Sarcoma (bone cancer) in 2014. Alyssa was a very active teenager and loved to try new things. She had been given many opportunities through Grandville Community Education, and we would like to assist others an opportunity to do the same. It is our goal to award many GCE scholarships annually to allow as many children as possible to “Learn Grow Lead” as Alyssa did. Please consider applying for a scholarship by completing the application on page 3 and submitting it to: Grandville Community Education 3843 Prairie St. SW Grandville, MI 49418

INDOOR INSTRUCTIONAL SOCCER (Ages 15 months – 12 yrs. old)

SOCCER BUDDIES – 596 Baldwin Ave. in Jenison – 616-259-0223

The goals of our program are simple but important: enable fitness, fun, skill building, and meaningful confidence in your kids. We strive for developing core components necessary for future soccer skills all while having FUN!!                   Koalas: 15 months – 36 months (parent participation)

This parent participation class uses fun games and activities to build confidence, motor skills, balance, coordination and more while your child kicks colorful balls and learns their colors. Socialization is also challenged by learning to share, take turns, and practice teamwork. Your child will also build their stamina and physical fitness in this class as the coach keeps it very high-energy, fast paced and fun. While this class is still a parent participation class, we are working towards using less of the parent and more of the individual child. Listening skills are challenged, and autonomy is encouraged. This class is a transitional class to Bears. Bears: 3 – 4 years This class is the youngest class without parent involvement. It gives the child their first opportunity to exercise true listening skills. We encourage independent thinking, following directions, and teamwork which will assist the child in preparation for school. We use a variety of props and age appropriate games to introduce the kids to group activities that stress active motor skill development and social interaction. This class is very high-paced and works on developing ball handling skills, coordination, and physical fitness.

Polar Bears: 4 - 6 years

This class is the perfect environment for a child who has never played, yet challenging enough for a child who has played before. Kids will build their self-confidence in a supportive, motivating and positive atmosphere. Skill building activities that develop foot-eye coordination, agility, balance, and kicking/running control will be introduced in this class. Young players will develop their confidence and a love for physical activity with our high-energy, outrageously fun coaches. They will get a chance to put those skills to use in small-sided games to maximize the “touches” the kids get on the ball. Polar Bears 7 - 12 years This class is the perfect environment for a child who has never played, yet challenging enough for a child who has played before. More fundamental soccer skills are introduced in this class. Confidence will soar while kids master certain skills. We will also develop speed and conditioning, as well as field awareness, technique, tactics and more. Kids in this class will scrimmage for 20 minutes of every class. This class maximizes the touches the child will get on the ball by playing smallsided games with highly-skilled coaches guiding play in a positive atmosphere.

“Learn to Swim” classes are open to all children 3 years of age through 12 years old who are ready for swim instruction. Student/Instructor ratios are kept low to ensure all guidelines are met with the American Red Cross (ARC) Learn-to-Swim Program. Participants will be initially grouped by age, then ability. Instructors will make changes to groups as needed. All participants must complete the required skills, aquatics and water safety at each level in order to move on to the next level. A progress sheet will be handed out at the end of the session.

“TINY TYKES” SWIM CLASSES - Ages: 15-35 months

“Tiny Tykes” class is a great first-time swim class for children 15-35 months of age. It is a great way to help your child feel comfortable in the water. The class will emphasize shallow water adjustment, how to enter and exit the water, blowing bubbles and playing games. Parents are required to accompany their child in the water. Children must wear a swim diaper or plastic pants over a cloth diaper.
