FALL 2017 Professional Development Day: Student Focused Activities, Meetings, and Workshops
11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Campus Connect: A Suicide Prevention Training- G26 McEwen Hall Presented by the Counseling Center This training teaches participants the warning signs for suicide and how to identify, understand, and relate to the emotional experiences of individuals in crisis. A primary objective of this training is assist students in developing the communication and listening skills necessary to develop positive and supportive helping relationships with individuals in crisis. Workshop learning outcomes: Identify common thoughts/feelings/behaviors experienced by those in crisis as well as helpful and/or effective crisis response styles. Increase awareness of participants to the common warning signs of suicidal ideation. Introduce and emphasize importance of listening, reflecting, connecting and caring. Introduce participants to making referrals and practicing crisis response skills.

12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wind/Brass Instrument Cleaning and Maintenance Workshop- Outside Mason Hall Featuring: David Turken, Guest Clinician As future instrumental music teachers/band directors, your school district will probably own several instruments. One of the ways to keep these instruments in proper working order is to keep them clean. This workshop demonstrates how to clean a variety of instruments. Attendees will have an opportunity to participate in the process. If you are renting an instrument from the School of Music, bring it with you. Your instrument may be chosen for the demonstration! Come learn some skills that you and your future students can put to good use. This event is sponsored by New York State Band Directors Association-Collegiate Chapter and the School of Music. Intercultural Leadership Development- Williams Center S204 ABC Featured Student Workshop with Convocation Speaker, Dr. Amer Ahmed Hosted by the Intercultural Center Students can register here: https://goo.gl/forms/frBu13b1w58KlYQj2 Among the array of perspectives on Leadership, most tend to focus on positional and individual achievement. These approaches to leadership typically reinforce the message that individuals should operate according to dominant cultural norms in order to succeed. What happens when we begin to conceive of leadership in a fundamentally different way that accounts for the need for intercultural skills? This workshop will engage participants in cultivating intercultural skills as necessary for effective leadership in the 21st Century. In this process, the goal will be to cultivate leadership that emphasizes community development, inclusion and equity rather than individual achievement.

This workshop will teach you how to join clubs, promote your club events and edit your club pages. You’ll also learn how to post meeting minutes, practices, schedules, bylaws or any other pertinent information for your members to view. Additionally, clubs can use card readers to accurately track attendance at events and create polls to make informed decisions.
