Hello All, We are proud to report that research from a newly released study conducted by the LeadingAge Center for Housing Plus Services in partnership with The Lewin Group (with funding from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation) has found that the "availability of an onsite service coordinator at federally subsidized senior housing properties (like the one we employ at Northgate II) reduced hospital admissions among residents by 18%." This advocacy group, which awarded a $25,000 "Innovations" grant to FSHD's Fair Share Northgate II in 2013, also recently created a "best practices" case study of our Northgate II wellness program in Camden with their MacArthur grant funding.

Reports are a wonderful way for our program to be recognized as a model that can be replicated by other affordable housing providers across the nation. But we know people give to people, so I'd like to share a story of one family who has benefitted from our program. Earlier this year, Luis Marrerro was concerned and confused about the changes in his mother's behavior and asked the social services department at Northgate II for help. Luz Cordero, 72, has multiple health issues including chronic pain, hypertension, osteoarthritis and memory loss, a potential early sign of Alzheimer's disease. In addition to arranging medical transportation and referring Luz for meals-on-wheels, the social services department made arrangements for Luz to receive a special evaluation for her memory loss at Rowan's Institute for Successful Aging. The staff also referred Luz to Caring, Inc., our on-site assisted living program, through which Luz is receiving help with personal care, medication administration and light housekeeping. Luis is very grateful for the services his mother receives. "I don't know what I would do without you guys. It has been a great help for me and my mom. Now, I have a much better understanding of the situation my mom

is going through." Luz said that what she likes most about living at Northgate II is that she can participate in the community programs and "socialize with the other residents." She also likes that she is able to keep her lovely cockatoo named Sue-Sue, her beloved pet for the past 20 years. This holiday season, when you think about which charities you wish to support, I hope you will consider making a donation this year to support the wellness program at Northgate II. Our work truly makes a difference in the lives of hundreds of seniors, people with special needs and families at our Northgate II complex in North Camden. Thanks in advance for helping us continue to help others.
