Prologuito ¿Qué es esto? ¿Tomar un libro ajeno y componer otro? ¿Reciclarlo?

from the trash in 1955,1 the lower edge partly burned and the pages scrawled on in a form of ‘deletion’ in pen marks and with pages torn. The cover refers to Eva Perón2 with cheerful young girls in a world of fantasy. In this volume we reproduce only twenty five of the 110 pages, most of them struck through with the evident intention of eliminating what is seen as ‘odious’ copy. In 1954 I was five years old. The following year I would be going to primary school, which was open to all and free. There was no preschool or kindergarten. I never knew ‘The Good Fairy’ book nor did I see it in the hands of second grade children.

1. September 16, 1955 is the date of the overthrow of the government of General Juan Domingo Perón (1899-1974). 2. Eva Perón, “Evita”, Perón’s wife, died of uterine cancer in July 1952, aged 33.

Infermiera d’ospedale, lei. Cameriere di sala, lui.

mother backed the Radical Party. Lunch time conversations were spectacular. My father said we had to be grateful to the General for our new home. Mother, quick to take him up, argued that the mortgage to build the house had to be paid with their wages. She was a hospital nurse. He was a restaurant waiter.

desks beneath portraits of Eva and Perón. I have no recollection of him wearing the mourning black band on his sleeve when Evita died, but certainly I recall the complaints of a Socialist friend of my father who was made to wear the black ribbon. The working class culture ruled. Study was compulsory, a secondary education and perhaps a university degree. Children had to become more than their parents.

Pag. 7 ‘La contribuzione popolare’.

‘The popular cause’. Money was collected to raise a monument to Eva. When aged seven, after First Communion and when the triumphant ‘Liberating Revolution’ had overthrown Perón, the boy from the provinces who now writes this was sent to the ‘porteño’ relatives’ modest home in Barracas, because the new teachers at school bullied him till he wept. He was the son of a Peronist, of course.

And there, with the defeat of the ‘Peronism of Youth’ who at one time trusted their leader, the old concept of ‘Fascism’ implicit in the politics of the first Perón and Eva did not prosper. Who had been most disturbed by the General who, emulating Mussolini, had encouraged trade unionism, housing programs, for the middle classes as well?

On this page, Perón is seen to be commercially opposed to the British.12 For an Argentine such as myself and by ‘Argentine’ I mean one who is ‘open to the world and removed from any form of discrimination’, remembering childhood is to be true to that which one lived, that is without psychological interpretations or clever cultural reviews of events seen from today. Controversial but true, Perón stood deep in my childhood.

Págs. 64-65 ‘The Liberators’. Poem by Africa F.

‘I Liberatori’.

De Dupuy equaling Juan Perón with the national Liberator General Juan José de San Martin (1778-1850). In the heading, somebody blotted out ‘the’ (Liberators) and removed the plurals to elevate only San Martín. The hand-written note adds, ‘The scoundrel’ which in Spanish is wrongly spelt. In 1954, when the book ‘The Good Fairy’ must have been aimed at indoctrinating second grade students according to the much-promoted beliefs in the ‘new Peronist guidelines’, this writer lived quite oblivious to the odium that such a blundering text was obviously creating in the anonymous obliterator.

president of Argentina, ‘to continue improving the conditions of the humble’. Generous land this one. The difficult fifties did not cause too much disruption to the shine on a childhood when, until then, children were safely preserved from the ‘sins’ of their parents. That would happen years later, when the Videla forces would destroy the lives and storm the cradles as part of their ‘program of national security’.

Africa F. de Dupuy would write. So growing up in a ‘Peronised’ country was not very difficult. Of course, it was the rule that ‘the only privileged are the children’. And then it helped to be the son of a Peronist. But later… as already related, father went to prison and I went to a childish exile in another home. Julio Cortazar had already decided his own voluntary exile.14

Marechal was, if not the only one, one of the few intellectuals who supported Peronism. Borges, never, but was considered a ‘gorilla’, the regime reportedly sacked him from his job in the National Library and appointed him ‘poultry inspector’ or something like that.

1951. Argentine women vote for the first time, and Peronism wins again. ‘We grew up in the rough’, Martín Fierro would say. Staving off as best we could the unpleasant ‘Socialist realism’ of Stalinism and the baseless demolition of public services already purchased, which the ‘liberators’ could not stomach because the public services had been acquired by a ‘dictatorship’ that was no model, not socially nor commercially.16

Back cover Overview of the Children’s Republic in La Plata, with its small visitors. In 1954, how could anybody imagine what was to come? It was another world, and this writer remembers it as a better one, the fraud and pillaging apart. But absent were the exploiters of the local effort and collective projects. And if dreams are only dreams, well, I still dream of that childhood. No blame attributed to the ‘The Good Fairy’…
