EYFS Outdoor Explore This set offers a range of exciting ways to use technology to enhance outdoor learning in EYFS. It contains: • 2 USB Microscopes • 2 MP3 Sound Recorders • 2 Digital Cameras • 1 iPevo visualiser • 3 Talking Buttons

USB Microscopes Software

To use the microscopes you must first install some free software. This software is available online from the link below. If you are reading a paper copy of this help sheet or if have any problems with this link please contact London CLC. http://www.tts-group.co.uk/_RMVirtual/Media/Downloads/Win7EasiScope.zip To install the software you will need an administrator password. Contact your ICT technician for advice.

Using the Microscope Plug the microscope into your computer using the USB cable. Wait a moment for your computer to register the device. Open the software by clicking ‘Start’ > ‘All Programs’ > ‘Digital Viewer’ > ‘AMCap’. You should automatically get a live feed from the microscope. If you have any problems click on the ‘Devices’ menu and ensure ‘Digital Viewer’ is selected.

Making a Video To save a video from the microscope click ‘Capture’ > ‘Start Capture’ . The first time you create a video you will be asked where you want to save your film and for a maximum film size. Give your file a memorable name followed by .avi (this is essential) and save it in a sensible location. Leave the storage option at the 1MB default. Once you press OK the software will begin recording. Press ‘Capture’ > ‘Stop capture’ to stop the video. Find the saved file and double click to play your video. Next time you create a video you must change file name to prevent your previous video being deleted. Select ‘File’ > ‘Set Capture File’ and chose a new file name.

In your classroom 1. Place a ‘mystery’ object underneath the microscope and display it on your IWB. Get students to guess what it could be. 2. Ask students to find some objects and imagine what they will look like under the microscope. Check to see which objects appear in a surprising way. 3. Press the microsope against your skin to reveal microscopic textures.

EYFS Outdoor Explore Digital Cameras The easy-to-use cameras enable students to capture digital images of the world around them. Digital stills camera can be used in the AUTO mode, but great results can be achieved by using the manual mode and selecting the correct settings for your photo. Below is a basic introduction to the principles of photography and a general guide to what various symbols might mean.

Aperture The main function of a camera lens is to collect light. The aperture of a lens is the diameter of the lens opening and is usually controlled by an iris. The larger the diameter of the aperture, the more light reaches the film / image sensor.

Shutter Speed In digital photography shutter speed is the length of time that your image sensor ’sees’ the scene you’re attempting to capture.

ISO Various shutter speeds

The measure of sensitivity to light

Resolution Resolution is a measurement of the output quality of an image, usually in terms of pixels or dots per inch. Printers use 300dpi Web Designers use 72dpi

JPEG JPEG/Exif is the most common image format used by digital cameras and is the most common format for storing and transmitting photographic images on the internet. The term “JPEG” is an acronym for the Joint Photographic Experts Group which created the standard.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) A bitmapped graphics file format handles monochrome, gray scale, 8-and 24-bit color. Widely used in book publishing and other print-related industries

Fill Flash The flash will fire regardless of whether the camera feels it is necessary. No Flash Turns off the flash. Red Eye Reduction This is to help reduce the problem of red-eye by initiating a series of small flashes just before the main flash ignites. Battery Tells you how much power is left in your battery

Spot Meter In this mode the camera sets its exposure on only the center of the frame Center Weight In this mode the camera judges the entire frame but gives priority to the center of the frame. Infinity Focus locks on the far end of the auto focus range so that the subject at a distance appear in sharp focus. Portrait In this mode you can take pictures of individual or small groups. Landscape In this mode you can take pictures of mountains or any large scene. Action Mode In this mode you can take pictures of fast moving object. The camera will reduce the shutter spead to avoid blurring. Night In this mode you can shoot pictures with very little light. Auto Flash This mode allows the camera to decides whether a flash is needed

EYFS Outdoor Explore iPevo Visualiser The iPevo is essetially a small, stable and moveable camera which can be used in conjunction with a computer and display screen to give children a clear, close-up view of what is on your desk.

Setup The iPevo is really straightforward to set up. All you need is the iPevo and a laptop with the iPevo Presenter software installed. This should come preinstalled with the laptop which was supplied with your loan. Simply plug the USB into the USB port into the laptop and open up iPevo Presenter. A window should pop open showing a live feed from the camera.

The controls on the iPevo are very simple. There are three buttons on top of the camera. The greeen button takes a snapshot using the camera. The slide button on the right of this picture controls auto focus, and you can slide it from either continuous autofocus or single auto focus. Continuous autofocus will mean the camera will automatically adjust and zoom in/out depending on what object is placed under it, making sure objects are always in focus.

However, if you find the auto focus mode a bit distracting or difficult when comparing two objects, simply slide the button to the “S” symbol, which now means you can control what the camera focuses on. Simply press the button in the middle in order to focus on an object. The screen will display a red square box when an object is not in focus, and a green box when it is in focus.
