When Lomitas died in 2010 at the age of 22, it seemed likely that we had pretty much heard the last of him as a sire. In fact, the opposite has been true. The 2011 season saw him enjoy triple Gr1 success with the Arc winner Danedream, with a further Gr1 victory coming via Sanagas in the Hollywood Turf Cup. This year has been even more successful, with his daughters Danedream, Salomina and Molly Malone all scoring at the top level. Molly Malone’s finest moment came when she tackled an extreme distance for the first time in the Prix du Cadran. Lomitas is out of a Surumu mare, as is Molly Malone’s third dam Mosella, so the four-year-old filly is inbred 3 x 4 to the 1977 German Derby winner, who sired three winners of the same Classic. Mosella is best known as the dam of Monsun, a stallion whose progeny – such as Masterstroke, Novellist and Silasol – were in fine form on very soft ground in the autumn of 2012. Molly Malone’s second dam Morning Queen was a winning sister to Monsun. Molly Malone is out of a Law Society mare, as are the Gr1-winning sisters Be Fabulous (Prix Royal-Oak) and Baila Me, who are by Monsun’s son Samum. The Classic winners Love Divine, Scorpion and Moonstone are others out of mares sired by Law Society.

When a race is as important and as competitive as the Arc, it would be unrealistic to expect it to become the domain of one particular male line. However, we have seen Sadler’s Wells, his brother Fairy King and their threeparts-brother Nureyev all sire winners, with Sadler’s Wells scoring with Carnegie and Montjeu. It was Montjeu who first ruined Japan’s dreams of winning the Arc, when he caught El Condor Pasa in 1999. Montjeu went on to sire the 2005 winner Hurricane Run, and Sadler’s Wells’s broodmare daughters got into the act by producing Sakhee, an impressive winner in 2001, and Workforce, who thwarted another gallant Japanese bid by Nakayama Festa in 2010. The Japanese finally appeared to have the Arc in their grasp when the Triple Crown winner Orfevre stormed into the lead, but he too was worn down in the closing stages. His conqueror Solemia is a staminapacked grand-daughter of Sadler’s Wells. The latest Arc winner is a daughter of Poliglote. Remarkably, this win provided the Haras d’Etreham stallion with his first northern hemisphere Gr1 success as a stallion, and it also catapulted him into a clear lead on France’s leading sires’ list. But that’s not all. Thanks largely to the Gr1winning hurdlers Saint du Chenet and Nikita du Berlais, Poliglote is also well on his way to repeating his 2010 feat of being the year’s champion sire of jumpers. Poliglote is out of the very successful broodmare Alexandrie and he lived up to his illustrious bloodlines by winning the Gr1 Criterium de SaintCloud at two and the Gr2 Grand Prix d’Evry at four, as well as by finishing second in Celtic Swing’s Prix du Jockey-Club. However, his initial stud fee in 1998 was only 35,000 francs. Solemia is one of only three northern-hemisphere-born Group winners on the Flat for Poliglote, but it was a different story when Poliglote shuttled to Argentina. He sired seven Gr1 winners there, including Kalath Wells, who became his second winner of the Argentine Oaks, the Premio Seleccion. Cacht Wells, one of these Argentine Gr1 winners, became a Gr2 winner in the US. Polemia is inbred 4 x 4 to the Prix du Jockey-Club winner Val de Loir, who enjoyed great success as a stallion. She is also another top-notch representative of the Sadler’s WellsShirley Heights cross. Sadler’s Wells’s 112 foals out of Shirley Heights mares contained 12.5% Group winners, headed by the outstanding performers In The Wings and Alexandrova. Among their 14 Group winners were Solemia’s three-partsbrothers Prospect Wells and Prospect Park, who were respectively second in the Gr1 Grand Prix de Paris and Gr1 Prix du Jockey-Club. For more details see Silasol, under race 340.

Timeform described Whipper as having a round action, so it was hardly surprising that the ground was soft when this admirably tough performer gained several of his Group victories, including in the Prix Morny. It seems that Whipper’s daughter Wizz Kid has inherited this ability to deal with testing conditions, as the ground was soft when she gained her first Group success in the 2011 Prix du GrosChene and it was heavy when she wore down Mayson to land the Gr1 Prix de l’Abbaye de Longchamp. Wizz Kid, together with Whipper’s other Group winners Royal Bench, Dolled Up and Topeka, were all sired during the five years that the triple Deauville Gr1 winner was based in Ireland, at Ballylinch Stud. However, Whipper had covered a lot of French mares in 2010 and he was returned to the country of his finest performances at the end of 2010, to stand at Haras du Mezeray. Wizz Kid is out of Lidanski, a daughter of another Ballylinch resident in Soviet Star. Lidanski, a seven-furlong winner, is a half-sister to

another of Whipper’s good winners, Yaa Wayl, who had a Timeform rating of 116 after winning the City of York Stakes. Both Whipper and Soviet Star enjoyed major success over six furlongs and a mile, but Wizz Kid has only once been asked to tackle a distance as long as seven furlongs (when she disappointed in the Prix Imprudence). She probably owes her lack of stamina to her second dam Lidanna, a Gr3 winner over five and six furlongs in Ireland. Lidanna’s sire Nicholas gained his best win in the Gr2 Goldene-Peitsche over six furlongs. Wizz Kid is the third European Gr1 winner out of a Soviet Star mare. All three are fillies, easily the best known of the other two being that excellent miler Soviet Song. 340 PRIX MARCEL BOUSSAC G1 LONGCHAMP. October 7. 2yof. 1600m.

the Prix Marcel Boussac and 41-1 Solemia in the Arc. Silasol’s third dam is Brooklyn’s Dance, who also figures as the dam of Solemia. Brooklyn’s Dance looked to have a very bright future when she won her first three starts, including 1991’s Gr3 Prix Cleopatre. Although she never won again, she was also a close second to the high-class Saganeca in the Prix de Royallieu. In addition to being a smart performer, Brooklyn’s Dance had the pedigree to develop into an excellent broodmare. Her dam Vallee Dansante had the distinction of being a halfsister to Green Dancer, a French 2,000 Guineas winner who became a very successful sire. One of Vallee Dansante’s half-sisters, Irish Valley, was to become the dam of Alhaarth and second dam of Makfi. Brooklyn’s Dance is the third daughter of Vallee Dansante to have produced a Gr1 winner, as Krissante produced the Grand Criterium winner Okawango, and the unraced Funsie became the dam of Authorized, who took the Derby on his way to becoming Europe’s champion threeyear-old of 2007. Brooklyn’s Dance had also added to the family’s reputation, well before Solemia’s emergence. As a daughter of Shirley Heights she became a natural choice to visit Sadler’s Wells, and her foals by him included the very talented colts Prospect Park and Prospect Wells, who respectively finished second in the Prix du JockeyClub and Grand Prix de Paris. Brooklyn’s Dance had started her broodmare career in the US, where she conceived her first five foals. Two of them became Listed winners in France, but Silasol’s second dam, the Storm Cat filly Brooklyn’s Storm, was only a minor winner in France and the US. Brooklyn’s Storm visited Gulch to produce Silasol’s dam Stormina. Group 2-placed in France, she was transferred to the US, where she won three minor stakes races at around a mile on turf. Silasol is Stormina’s second foal. Silasol possesses plenty of courage, as she showed in narrowly winning her second and third starts after leading from the start. She is Monsun’s second Group winner from a Mr Prospector line mare. 341 PRIX JEAN-LUC LAGARDERE G1 LONGCHAMP. October 7. 2yoc&f. 1400m.

After a gap of three years, the top Australian sprinter Choisir is going to shuttle to Ireland for the 2013 season. The explanation for this change is that the son of Danehill Dancer has had a pretty good year worldwide. He has enjoyed Group success in Australia, New Zealand, England, Ireland, France and the USA, with some of his finest moments coming via the two-year-old Olympic Glory. This £65,000 yearling failed by three-quarters of a length to cope with Dawn Approach in the Gr2 Coventry Stakes but he has won all four of his other races. He was gaining his third consecutive Group success when he carried the colours of Sheikh Joann Bin Hamad Al Thani for the first time in the Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere. Olympic Glory has been finishing strongly in his races over seven furlongs, which suggests he is benefiting from having Alzao and Shirley Heights as the sires of his first two dams. His sire Choisir and third dam Amaranda showed no such stamina. Choisir shot to fame by completing the King’s Stand-Golden Jubilee double in 2003, and his Australian son Starspangledbanner also put the European sprinters in their place by taking the Golden Jubilee and July Cup in 2010. Amaranda was once described by Harry Wragg as the fastest horse he had ever trained and this winner of the Queen Mary Stakes was only once asked to tackle more than five furlongs. She visited Sadler’s Wells to produce the Royal Hunt Cup winner Imperial Ballet, and Amaranda’s speed

The news that the Derby winner Motivator is heading to France, to stand at Haras du Quesnay is no surprise, as the move follows the stallion’s first Gr1 success as a sire, via the very talented Ridasiyna in the Prix de l’Opera. When I reviewed Montjeu’s stallion sons in the August issue, I commented that “Ridasiyna could have a leading role to play in the autumn’s top fillies’ races in France.” This prediction was

based on her record of three wins from as many starts, but she then suffered a setback when only fifth in the Prix de la Nonette. Equipping her with a hood in the Opera saw her bounce back with a career-best effort. One of Montjeu’s few flaws as a stallion was that his colts, generally, were more effective than his fillies. The opposite seems to be true for his son Motivator. All four of his Group winners – Pollenator, Skia, Clinical and Ridasiyna – are fillies and so are four of his six Listed winners, including Motrice, Captivator and Vow, a creditable fourth in the Oaks. Ridasiyna’s broodmare sire Darshaan filled the same position in the pedigrees of six stakes winners by Montjeu, headed by the Derby-winning Pour Moi. Ridasiyna’s dam, the minor mile-and-a-half winner Ridafa, was culled from the Aga Khan Studs in December 2009, for €30,000 at Arqana. Ridasiyna is the second Prix de l’Opera winner from this family, as her fourth dam Rilasa is also the third dam of Kinnaird, winner in 2005. Ridasiyna’s third dam Riyda was a half-sister to Rayseka, runner-up in the Irish St Leger, and to Rifada, dam of the Prix Hocquart winner Rifapour. Trace this female line back a little further and you come to Rose Ness, the Charlottesville mare who also ranks as the fourth dam of Daylami and Dalakhani. 343 PRIX DE LA FORET G1 LONGCHAMP. As a racehorse, Byron could have been described as a “nearly” horse. Good enough to win at Gr2 level as a two- and three-year-old, he also finished a close third in the French 2,000 Guineas. Kept in training at four and five, he added a couple of seconds at Gr3 level. In today’s very competitive bloodstock industry, this may not have been enough to earn Byron a place at a leading stud, but the strength of his bloodlines clinched him a place in the Darley team. By Green Desert, a noted sire of sires, Byron also had the attraction of being out of a Cheveley Park Stakes winner from the same female line as such as AP Indy, Lemon Drop Kid and Summer Squall. Byron didn’t make a good enough start to retain his place in the Darley team, leaving to stand at Woodlands Stud in Co Galway in 2012. However, his fortunes have subsequently taken a turn for the better. His second-crop daughter Byrama has been showing plenty of speed in sprint stakes on turf in the US and his first-crop son Gordon Lord Byron has proved extremely progressive. After starting 2012 with an official rating of 88, this gelding ended the year with a second place in the Betfred Sprint Cup and a victory in the Prix de la Foret. Although neither his sire Byron nor his broodmare sire Intikhab stood up to a lot of racing, Gordon Lord Byron packed a total of 21 starts into his 2011 and 2012 campaigns. His dam Boa Estrela never raced but her game half-sister Cheyenne Star raced 20 times and was good enough to win Gr3 races over seven furlongs and a mile. Gordon Lord Byron’s fourth dam, Blazon, was a winning half-sister to the top-class colts Exceller and Capote. 344 GROSSER PREIS DER LANDESHAUPTSTADT G3 DUSSELDORF. October 7. 3yo+. 1700m.

Invincible Spirit

No-one could say that Juddmonte didn’t give Broken Spectre every chance to establish her merit before selling the lightly-raced daughter of Rainbow Quest for 9,000gns in December 2008. She had had foals by six different stallions, including

such accomplished sires as Cadeaux Genereux, Zafonic and Dansili, but only one of the six managed to win. She had been persevered with because she was a sister to three black-type earners headed by Armiger, winner of the Racing Post Trophy and second in the St Leger. Juddmonte also had a winning sister to Broken Spectre among its broodmare band, plus some young fillies out of her dam, so she appeared dispensable. In this instance, though, Broken Spectre’s buyers have had the better of the deal. Mated to Lawman in 2009 and 2010, the mare produced a colt, then a filly. The colt, Law Enforcement, was winning for the fourth successive time when he landed the Gr1 Gran Criterium on October 13, five days before his yearling sister sold to Shadwell for 90,000gns. Law Enforcement’s first stakes victory formed part of a spectacular run of success by Lawman’s secondcrop juveniles. The French colt Us Law set the ball rolling with a win in the Gr3 Prix Thomas Bryon. Two days later Lawman’s imposing daughter Just The Judge maintained her unbeaten record with a victory over another Lawman filly, Nargys, in the Gr2 Rockfel Stakes. At about the same time, Law Enforcement was winning in Italy. Interestingly, two broodmare sires are responsible for four of Lawman’s Group winners. Us Law shares the same broodmare sire, Linamix, as the Gr1 St James’s Palace Stakes winner Most Improved, while Rainbow Quest sired the dams of both Just The Judge and Law Enforcement. Another Rainbow Quest mare produced the smart sprinter Spirit Quartz to Lawman’s sire Invincible Spirit.

He has effectively written his own eulogy with a sequence of very smart performances by his progeny throughout the autumn. His threeyear-old son Masterstroke confirmed that he is a bright prospect for 2013 by finishing third in the Arc, and there were Group successes for Maxios, Silasol (Gr1 Prix Marcel Boussac) and Novellist (Gr1 Gran Premio del Jockey Club). The autumn also saw the Gr1 Premio Lydia Tesio won by a filly out of a Monsun mare. Novellist, like Masterstroke, is a member of Monsun’s 2009 crop and he too has the makings of a highclass four-year-old. Novellist had started a hot favourite for the Deutsches Derby after winning his first four starts. He made what promised to be a winning move when he led inside the final 100 metres of the Hamburg Classic, only to be caught close home by Pastorius. Although Novellist could finish only fourth behind Danedream on his first start against older horses, he easily defeated his elders in the Gran Premio. In winning the San Siro Gr1, Novellist followed the example of Monsun’s sons Shirocco and Schiaparelli. Novellist’s dam Night Lagoon won the Gr3 Preis der Winterkonigin as a two-year-old. Quite a few of the best winners from this female line carry the word ‘Night’ in their name. Night Lagoon’s fifth dam Nigeria is the fourth dam of Night Magic, winner of the Preis der Diana and Grosser Preis von Baden. Nigeria is also the fourth

to five wins from six starts when he beat the future St Leger winner Snurge in the Great Voltigeur. Belmez died aged 12 in France, leaving 191 foals. Only two of them were Group winners. Kingsbarns’s dam Beltisaal never finished closer than fourth in a seven-race career in the French provinces, during which she tackled distances at up to a mile and a half. While Belmez’s broodmare daughters generally proved ordinary, Beltisaal is singlehandedly responsible for three of the five Group winners out of Belmez mares, having previously produced the seven-furlong Gr3 winner Belle Artiste and the talented American turf miler Sweeter Still.

Nearctic Natalma Bold Reason Special Mr Prospector Hopespringseternal Lombard Anatevka Northern Dancer Sex Appeal Top Ville Val de Grace Nijinsky Foreseer Be Friendly Mesopotamia

Back in 1963, the highest filly on the Two-Year-Old Free Handicap was Irish-trained Mesopotamia. Despite having an Ascot Gold Cup winner and an Irish Oaks winner as her parents, Mesopotamia showed tremendous speed, notably winning the six-furlong Chesham Stakes by ten lengths. Mesopotamia failed to win at three, but her numerous Group-winning descendants have made ample amends. They include the top-class Halling and Japan Cup winner Alkaased, and there may be more glory awaiting this family in 2013. The unbeaten Rockfel Stakes winner Just The Judge has Mesopotamia as her fifth dam, and the daughter of Zarathustra also figures as the fourth dam of Kingsbarns. The son of Galileo earned the position of winter favourite for the Derby with a decisive victory in the Racing Post Trophy, only 17 days after his impressive winning debut at Navan. Kingsbarns was conceived in 2009 at a time when another Galileo colt, Rip Van Winkle, was being prepared for the 2,000 Guineas. Rip Van Winkle, who went on to finish fourth in the Derby and to win three Gr1 races, has Mesopotamia as his fifth dam. Both Kingsbarns and Rip Van Winkle are linked to Mesopotamia via her Be Friendly filly House Tie, who won over a mile. There can be little doubt that Kingsbarns is going to be very well suited by the Derby distance, as both his sire Galileo and his broodmare sire Belmez won the King George. Belmez defeated the future Derby winner Quest For Fame in the Chester Vase but came out of the race with an injury. Returned to action in the Irish Derby, Belmez went on to win the King George and then improved his record

the Royal-Oak, in which he led throughout to win decisively. Les Beaufs comes from the second crop by Apsis, a Barathea colt who gained all six of his stakes successes in the Abdullah colours at around a mile. He is his first Group winner. Les Beaufs’s dam Yeomanry spent most of her racing career contesting claimers over hurdles. She won four of them, all at around two miles. The gelding has plenty of stamina on the dam’s side of his pedigree, his first three dams being daughters of the middle-distance Gr1 winners Saumarez (Grand Prix de Paris and Arc), Law Society (Irish Derby) and Arctic Tern (Prix Ganay). The Law Society mare, Debbie’s Law, gained one of her victories over nearly two miles at Longchamp. The Arctic Tern mare, Debbie’s Next, did well with her Seattle Dancer filly Caffe Latte, who developed into a very effective turf performer at up to a mile and a quarter in California, where she won the Gr1 Ramona Handicap and Gr2 Santa Barbara Handicap.

The Prix Royal-Oak numbers the likes of Westerner and Yeats among its previous winners but I suspect that the majority of racing enthusiasts would be hard pressed to name the last few winners of the so-called French St Leger. The six-year-old gelding Gentoo scored in 2010, followed by Be Fabulous, who recorded her one and only Group victory when she took the 2011 edition. Now the name of Les Beaufs can be added to the list. This three-yearold gelding was scoring for only the second time in ten starts. He had started at 50-1 on his previous outing, when beaten a neck by Canticum after holding a clear lead most of the way up the straight in the Gr2 Prix Chaudenay. That improved performance saw him start at 9-1 in

The hammer fell at €30,000 when the Wertheimer brothers offered Sortilege at 2011’s Arqana December Sales. The filly had won twice over middle distances but those victories had been gained in a G level race at ChateauGontier and an F race at Machecoul. Her new owners, Gestut Karlshof, switched the daughter of Tiger Hill to be trained in Germany, from where she has made successful raids on a Listed race at Strasbourg and the Gr1 Premio Lydia Tesio at Rome. These victories must have multiplied her worth several times, as Sortilege is a very well-connected filly. Her dam Sahel didn’t win until the last of her eight starts, on Deauville’s all-weather track, but the fact that her parents were Monsun and Sacarina made her a sister to Samum (Deutsches Derby in 2000), Salve Regina (Preis der Diana in 2002, when also second in the Deutsches Derby) and Schiaparelli (Deutsches Derby in 2006). Sahel becomes the third daughter of Sacarina to have produced a Group winner, following Salve Regina and Sasuela. Sortilege’s sire Tiger Hill arrived at Dalham Hall at a fee of £25,000 in 2006. Billed as “outperforming all other stallion sons of Danehill,” he had sired a high percentage of stakes winners in his early crops, produced in France and Germany. He failed to maintain his strike-rate but did sire the top-class but ill-fated Rewilding. 378 PRIX DE FLORE G3 SAINT-CLOUD. October 29. 3yo+f&m. 2100m.

Fans of Frankel will have been watching the stallion career of Teofilo, another champion two-year-old sired by Galileo from a Danehill mare. The Kildangan stallion made a bright start with a first crop which contains six stakes winners, headed by the Dewhurst winner Parish Hall and the Group-winning Irish Derby third Light Heavy. Signs are that Teofilo’s second crop may be even better. It has already produced three Group-winning colts in Havana Gold, Trading Leather and Loch Garman, plus the Fillies’ Mile runner-up Roz. Teofilo’s breeder and trainer Jim Bolger has had the pleasure of training several of these stakes winners. In fact he has bred four of Teofilo’s six Group winners, including both his Gr1 winners. The latest, Loch Garman, contested the Criterium International only eight days after he had made a winning debut at Navan. For a long time Loch Garman didn’t appear likely to catch leader Anna’s Pearl in the one-mile Saint-Cloud event, but he stayed on very well in the heavy ground. Teofilo has already sired several winners over two miles or more, including the runaway Irish Cesarewitch winner Voleuse de Coeurs; Galileo’s stamina appears to be making its presence felt. It is going to be fascinating to see how far Loch Garman stays. His dam Irish Question gained her only win over a mile and was tried at up to 11 furlongs. The next dam, Key To Coolcullen, was inbred 2 x 3 to Nijinsky but we never discovered whether this had imparted stamina into her, as she never ran. However, she was sired by a fast horse, Royal Academy, and she was a half-sister to a pair of two-year-old Group winners. One of them, the Double Schwartz filly Eva Luna, won the Gr1 Phoenix Stakes for Bolger in 1994. Loch Garman’s fourth dam Galka was a useful early two-year-old fivefurlong winner by the five-furlong specialist Deep Diver.

With none of its seven runners having won a Gr1 race during 2012, the Premio Roma looked to be at the mercy of the sole British raider Hunter’s Light. This proved to be accurate, with the son of Dubawi winning easing up, despite having hung across the course inside the penultimate furlong. This was the third good victory of the year for the fouryear-old, who had previously scored in Britain and Turkey. Dubawi’s domestic runners have helped him achieve his third consecutive top-ten finish on the sires’ list, which confirms his right to be one of Britain’s highest-priced stallions. He wasn’t always in such demand, though. Despite having a first crop of 117 and a second crop of 115, his third crop, born in 2009, numbered 76 and his fourth crop – sired at only £15,000 – totaled only 60. This comparative lack of numbers could make it harder for him to retain his top-ten position in 2013, but he will have a large batch of two-year-olds coming on line and his best years should be ahead of him. Hunter’s Light is out of a Barathea mare, as is Dubawi’s 2012 Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso. His dam Portmanteau is very well bred, as might be guessed from the 590,000gns she cost Maktoum Al Maktoum as a yearling in 2002. She repaid only a fraction of that amount on the track, in winning twice over a mile and a quarter. Portmanteau is a half-sister to Courteous, a very smart middle-distance performer by Generous. Hunter’s Light’s second dam Dayanata was an unraced sister to Darshaan, the influential stallion who sired the dam of Dubawi’s very smart son Al Kazeem. Dayanata is also a three-parts-sister to Dalara, dam of the Coronation Cup winner Daliapour, and half-sister to Darara, the magnificent broodmare who produced Dar Re Mi and Rewilding late in her career.

Indy Point, never out of the first three in ten races, collected his second G1 victory, beating Big Cazanova and Di Giorgio by two lengths and threequarters of a length. The trio had finished in the same order in the Clasico Miguel Cane (G2) over one mile at Palermo on August 18. This was Indy Point's first race at San Isidro and first beyond one mile. The Australian breeding industry is simply not producing world class horses that can stay beyond a mile – in sharp contrast to its domination of the sprinting scene. October’s Group 1 results underlined this trend as all six of the top-level contests run at beyond a mile were won by foreigners. European raiders also landed a pair of lesser Pattern events, John Gosden’s Gatewood taking the Geelong Cup, while Shahwardi, trained by Alain de Royer-Dupre, took the Herbert Power Stakes. All Too Hard looks the best Aussiebred three-year-old colt after he inflicted the first ever defeat on the Juvenile Triple Crown winner Pierro, by a neck in the Caulfield Guineas. Suipacha. Charles King tried to make all, as he had last year. Then he was caught by Dona Ley close home. This time he was nailed by another threeyear-old filly, Animas, while again trying to concede 20lb. Maipo Royale was the latest to emphasise what a loss the death of Val Royal was to Argentine breeding. he then defied stamina doubts to run very well in the ten-furlong Cox Plate. He extended his superiority over third-placed Pierro to almost four lengths but came up a neck shy of the in-form Kiwi raider Ocean Park, who was winning his fourth Group 1 inside two months, having also landed the Caulfield Stakes a fortnight earlier. Victory in the Turnbull Stakes meant that Green Moon, once trained in England by Harry Dunlop, started favourite for the Cox Plate. He could manage only seventh in that but went on to win the Melbourne Cup. French visitor Dunaden posted an incredible performance to follow up his 2011 Melbourne Cup success in the Caulfield Cup as he had to defy both top weight and stall 18 of 18, which

Another French-trained ex-Melbourne Cup winner, Americain, was fourth, one place in front of Luca Cumani’s Quest For Peace. Favourite here was Glencadam Gold by dint of having won all four of his starts since leaving Sir Henry Cecil to join Gai Waterhouse. But, having made the running, he dropped away to finish 15th. was the Spring Champion Stakes, which was exported across the Tasman Sea thanks to Dundeel’s short-neck defeat of another Waterhouse charge, Proisir. Among the fillies, Commanding Jewel ran out an authoritative winner of the Thousand Guineas to further enhance her paddock value – she is a year-younger three-parts sister to the unbeaten dual Group 1 winner Atlantic Jewel, who was recently forced into premature retirement by injury. Norzita gave trainer Bart Cummings the 265th Group 1 victory of his career in the Flight Stakes while Sea Siren might, in Black Caviar’s absence, be considered Australia’s top sprinter after she notched a third top-level success in the Manikato Stakes.

Dangerous Midge, the 2010 Turf winner, remains the last British-trained Breeders’ Cup [BC] winner after we drew a blank at Santa Anita. Ill luck in running accounted for some of our best hopes, while the reversion to traditional American dirt after a flirtation with an artificial surface meant just three European runners contested the nine races run on the main track. There were a couple of rays of sunshine for the visitors. Aidan O’Brien’s Dewhurst Stakes third George Vancouver relished the firm ground in the Juvenile Turf and Mikel Delzangles-trained Flotilla took the Juvenile Fillies Turf. The most joyous overseas success came in the Marathon, in which Calidoscopio, given a brilliant ride by

134

Aaron Gryder, who was content to be tailed off in the early stages, became a first ever BC winner for Argentina. The victory of Jeremy Noseda’s Grandeur in one of the top supporting races, the Grade 2 Twilight Derby, provided the merest crumb of consolation for Britain. The US-trained stars of the show were Wise Dan, Royal Delta, Groupie Doll and Shanghai Bobby. Wise Dan, who has proved himself on four different surfaces, broke the track record with a dominant performance in the Mile. The runner-up, Animal Kingdom, deserves equal plaudits on his first start since February and his second since June 2011, while, 14 days after his Queen Elizabeth II Stakes procession, Excelebration was fourth.

Royal Delta repeated the previous year’s Ladies Classic triumph and, like Wise Dan stays in training next season. Groupie Doll had almost five lengths in hand when completing a five-timer in the Filly & Mare Sprint. Shanghai Bobby made his recent part-purchase by Coolmore look good business when showing a superb attitude to grind out a win, having helped set what looked a suicidal early pace, in the Juvenile. The dirt favoured front-runners, as was illustrated in the Classic, in which Fort Larned and Mucho Macho Man filled the first two places throughout and, split by half a length, were six lengths clear of the rest at the finish. Track bias may also have contributed to pace-setting Beholder’s Juvenile

Fillies win over Executiveprivilege, a rival she had lost to twice, although the step up in trip was another important factor. Least fathomable result was the Turf success of Little Mike. His previous form screamed he would struggle to see out 12 furlongs, yet ridden more conservatively he was still striding out well as he passed the post half a length in front of Point Of Entry, with the 2011 winner St Nicholas Abbey back in third. Other Grade 1 victories had differing degrees of relevance to BC results. Shanghai Bobby (Champagne Stakes) and Wise Dan (Shadwell Turf Mile) followed up but Dreaming Of Julia (Frizette Stakes) and Spring In The Air (Alcibiades Stakes) could not – they came third and fifth to Beholder.

Top two for trips Galileo remains unstoppable, though Montjeu has made steady headway in second. Kingsbarns put icing on the cake for Galileo in the Racing Post Trophy. Galileo and Montjeu are the only ones in the top group on whom breeders could rely to sire a significant number of winners over a mile and a half. Speed is the dominant element with Invincible Spirit, Pivotal, Oasis Dream and Exceed And Excel, though they do get middle-distance winners. This reflects the position in the USA. The irony in following the commercial obsession with speed rather than stamina is there is no sign of its creating a wave of first-rate specialist sprinters.

Medicean progress Monsun and Galileo increased their percentage of stakes winners marginally, no mean achievement given the level at which they are operating. Dansili is the same as before, Elusive Quality has jumped into fourth and Dubawi, though dropping a place, also had a fractional increase. The greatest progress was made by Medicean (24th to 17th) and Lawman (11th to sixth). Bayrir, Capponi, Mince, Sapphire and Siyouma have made it a memorable year internationally for Medicean, whose progeny are capable of winning over a wide range of trips. Law Enforcement gave Lawman his second Group 1 score of the year.

That’s the Spirit Invincible Spirit has had a great year, with four Group 1 winners. Moonlight Cloud and Mayson shone as older sprinters and among 27 juvenile scorers so far – only Kheleyf and Holy Roman Emperor have had more – Rosdhu Queen won the Cheveley Park. Victrix Ludorum’s sales race win at Newmarket helped Invincible Spirit but Red Clubs (second) and Elusive Quality (fourth) also profited in that department. The same cannot be said for champion freshman by earnings New Approach or Holy Roman Emperor, sire of recent Group 1 winner Morandi. New Approach may yet end as top first-season sire numerically.
