of NH stallion. His change of direction was prompted by the successes of such as Ebaziyan, Zaynar and Ebadiyan. Daylami had been exported to South Africa in 2007 after failing to fulfil the promise he showed by siring Grey Swallow in his first crop. Since then he has been ably represented by such as Indian Days, Whispering Gallery and Voila Ici. Voila Ici’s third dam, Circus Ring, shared the title of champion two-yearold filly in Britain, after taking the Princess Margaret Stakes and Lowther Stakes. Circus Ring produced two very useful daughters in Lady Shipley and Ellie Ardensky, and two other daughters have Gr1-winning descendants. Circus Act is the second dam of the Hong Kong star Viva Pataca, while Rose Of Tralee, an Australian-foaled daughter of Sadler’s Wells, is the dam of the Australian champion Serenade Rose. Voila Ici is the second foal of Far Hope, a precocious Barathea mare who did all her winning at up to seven furlongs. 120 UNION-RENNEN G2 COLOGNE. June 13. 3yo. 2200m.

With no challengers from Britain and only one from France, the 2011 Gran Premio didn’t look a vintage edition of a race whose past winners include Nearco, Tenerani, Botticelli, Ribot, Prince Royal, Star Appeal, Tony Bin, Falbrav and Lando. However, the field contained three previous Gr1 winners in the previous year’s winner Jakkalberry, the German colt Scalo and the dependable six-year-old Voila Ici. They were to fill three of the first four places, with Voila Ici gamely holding off Scalo by a neck. Voila Ici takes after his sire Daylami, who was at his most successful as a five-year-old. Voila Ici won the Gr1 Premio Roma at that age, his best win at a younger age being his success in the Gr2 Prix Maurice de Nieuil as a four-year-old. Daylami is now based at Coolagown Stud in Ireland, in the role

Oasis Dream could finish only third in the 2003 King’s Stand Stakes, but the 2011 edition provided him with yet another triumph as a stallion, thanks to his first-crop son Prohibit. This first crop has now produced four Gr1 winners, the others being Aqlaam, Tuscan Evening and Lady Jane Digby, and there are nine Group winners among the crop’s very impressive total of 16 stakes winners. Oasis Dream also scored at the Royal meeting with Power in the Gr2 Coventry Stakes. Although Prohibit no longer carries Khalid Abdullah’s colours, his win helped Juddmonte take the title of leading breeder at Royal Ascot and his pedigree bears the Juddmonte hallmark for several generations. In addition to Oasis Dream, it contains Dancing Brave, Bahamian, Warning, Known Fact and Slightly Dangerous, and his fourth dam is Mofida. Mofida, a tremendously tough individual who won eight times, became one of Juddmonte’s foundation mares, thanks principally to the efforts of her daughters Zaizafon and Modena. Zaizafon, of course, produced Zafonic and Zamindar, while Modena numbered Reams Of Verse, Elmaamul and Manifest among her Group winners, in addition to producing Midsummer, the dam of Midday. Two other daughters of Mofida, Model Bride and Mariakova, also have Gr1-winning descendants. Mariakova was a sister to Zaizafon but was bred by Swettenham Stud before Mofida’s sale to Juddmonte. However, Juddmonte bought Mariakova’s daughter Well Beyond as a yearling and she justified her purchase by producing the talented sisters Well Warned and Out Of Reach to Warning. Well Warned, who was third in the Cherry Hinton Stakes, produced three consecutive stakes winners in Prior Warning, Prohibit and Emergency, the last-named being a very useful performer at up to a mile in France. Emergency was covered successfully by Oasis Dream in 2011. 124 ST JAMES’S PALACE S G1 ASCOT. June 14. 3yoc. 8f.

I’m not sure what the odds must be against a mare producing a pair of Gr1 winners in her twenties, but describing Darara as one in a million is probably understating things. The Watership Down broodmare was 22 when she foaled that grand filly Da Re Mi and 24 when she produced Rewilding, winner in 2011 of the Dubai Sheema Classic and Prince of Wales’s Stakes. Perhaps Darara’s longevity as a broodmare owes something to the fact that she ceased to be a regular breeder in her mid-teens and was barren for four consecutive years. Darara was acquired for Watership Down as an 11-year-old in 1994. The daughter of Top Ville had earned a Timeform rating of 129 with her easy victory in the Gr1 Prix Vermeille and her good sixth in Dancing Brave’s Arc.

Darara also had the attraction of being a half-sister to Darshaan and of being in foal to Darshaan’s sire Shirley Heights. Although Darara was sold for IR470,000gns, she has proved a tremendous bargain. Kilimanjaro, the colt she was carrying, sold for 500,000gns and he was immediately followed by Rhagaas and Diaghilev, two Sadler’s Wells colts which sold for 500,000gns and 3,400,000gns. The mare now has four Gr1 winners to her credit, as Darazari and Diaghilev respectively scored at the top level in Australia and Hong Kong. Rewilding’s sire Tiger Hill arrived at Dalham Hall at a fee of £25,000 in 2006. Billed as ‘outperforming all other stallion sons of Danehill,’ he had sired a high percentage of stakes winners in his early crops. However, he failed to maintain his strike rate, Rewilding being the only Group winner so far from his first two Darley crops.

had helped him sire two winners of the Doncaster Cup in Honolulu and Askar Tau, plus a high-class staying filly in Montare, winner of the Prix Royal-Oak and fifth in the 2007 Gold Cup after trouble in running. Montare is relevant to Fame And Glory, as they share the same broodmare sire, Shirley Heights. Sure enough the distance proved no problem for Fame And Glory, who now boasts a record of which any horse could be proud. He has scored at Gr1 level at two, three, four and five, and his win in the Gold Cup came only 13 months after he had run out a seven-length winner of the Tattersalls Gold Cup over little more than half the distance. He has now won 12 of his 18 starts, including six Group races at around a mile and a quarter, so he should certainly not be dismissed as a stayer. Fame And Glory’s dam Gryada was owned by Lord Howard de Walden’s Plantation Stud, which earlier sent a German mare to Shirley Heights to produce the Derby-winning Slip Anchor. Gryada’s dam Grimpola was another acquisition from Germany, where she had won the 1,000 Guineas and finished third in the German Oaks. Seven of Grimpola’s eight foals were by members of the Mill Reef male line, with a mating to Slip Anchor producing Gonfalon, a three-parts-sister to Gryada. Gonfalon returned to Germany to produce the top filly Gonbarda and two other Group winners in Gonfilia and Gonlargo. Gryada was carrying Fame And Glory when she sold for 160,000gns as part of the de Walden dispersal in 2005. She returned to the sales in 2006, when she sold for 180,000gns. Lord Howard de Walden’s widow retained a young grand-daughter of Gryada and this filly – Galileo’s daughter Gravitation – won the Gr3 Lillie Langtry Stakes.

Nowadays it is usually impossible to say with any certainty whether a horse will stay the two and a half miles of the Gold Cup. However, there seemed to be every reason to be optimistic about the prospects of 2009’s Irish Derby winner Fame And Glory. His sire Montjeu is out of Floripedes, a 15furlong Group winner whose broodmare sire, Tennyson, won the Grand Prix de Paris in the days when it was over 15.5 furlongs. The many breeders looking for an ideal mate for their Sadler’s Wells mares were bound to consider Pivotal. This top stallion has Nureyev in his pedigree and therefore creates 4 x 3 to Northern Dancer and 4 x 4 to Special, in much the same way as Kingmambo did in his highly successful association with Sadler’s Wells mares. Kilfrush Stud had a further incentive for sending Sadler’s Wells’s daughter Side Of Paradise to Pivotal in 2007, as this very useful French performer comes from the same Mill Princess family as Zelding, whose Pivotal filly Beauty Is Truth had won the Gr3 Prix d’Arenberg in 2006. Side Of Paradise duly produced a filly which – as Immortal Verse – became Pivotal’s first Gr1 winner out of a Sadler’s Wells mare when she stylishly won the Coronation Stakes. This cross’s 39 foals also include Emerald Commander, a Gr2 winner in Germany, and Nationalism, a very useful miler. Immortal Verse’s family has served Kilfrush Stud exceptionally well. As a daughter of Mill Princess with a son of Northern Dancer as her sire, Side Of Paradise is a three-parts-sister to the champion sprinter Last Tycoon, the Gr2 sprint winner Astronef and the precocious Gr3 winner The Perfect Life. Another of Mill Princess’s daughters, Save Me The Waltz, produced the French 1,000 Guineas winner Valentine Waltz, while another, Zelda, produced three fast Group winners and yet another, Tender Is Thenight, bred the French 1,000 Guineas winner Tie Black. Immortal Verse’s third dam Irish Lass II was a sister to Lynchris, winner of the Irish Oaks and Irish St Leger. In addition to producing Irish Ball, winner of the 1971 Irish Derby, Irish Lass produced the outstanding broodmares Mill Princess and Irish Bird. Irish Bird became one of the few mares with three Classic winners to their credit, thanks to Bikala, Assert and Eurobird. 135 QUEEN’S VASE G3 ASCOT. June 17. 3yo. 16f.

Having been leased to Japan for 2007, Rock Of Gibraltar has no European three-year-olds in 2011, which is bound to make it more difficult to figure highly on the leading sires’ list. However, this outstanding miler is still having a fine year. At the Royal Ascot meeting, where he had won the 2002 St James’s Palace Stakes, Rock Of Gibraltar scored a Group race double, with Samitar taking the Gr3 Albany Stakes and Society Rock the Gr1 Golden Jubilee. This was comfortably Society Rock’s

best effort since he had finished second to Starspangledbanner in the previous year’s Jubilee. Society Rock and Samitar are among a growing number of blacktype performers by Rock Of Gibraltar with two lines of Danzig in their pedigree. Samitar is inbred 3 x 4, as is Society Rock, whose second line comes through his broodmare sire Key Of Luck, a grandson of Danzig. Key Of Luck, a three-parts-brother to the champion sprinter Anabaa, showed a lot of speed at two, when he won the Gr3 Prix d’Arenberg. After being unable to race at three, he didn’t win again until he stepped up to a mile. He moved up the distance scale again after his transfer to the UAE, where he raced on sand. After carrying top weight to a 12-length success in record time over a mile and a quarter, he took the Dubai Duty Free by 20 lengths. Although his opportunities were initially limited, Key Of Luck sired the Group-placed Listed winners Wrong Key and High Society in his first crop before coming up with the top-class Alamshar and the Group-winning sprinter Miss Emma in his second. Society Rock is out of High Society, who was Group placed in Ireland before becoming a stakes winner over 6.5 furlongs in the USA, where she was Graded placed over eight and nine furlongs. 139 HARDWICKE S G2

The youngest of Darshaan’s daughters are now nine years old, but this outstanding broodmare sire is still making a major impact. At the end of June the former Aga Khan stallion occupied top place on the Anglo-Irish broodmare sire table and third place on the French list, thanks largely to the Gr1-winning efforts of Pour Moi, Wavering and Sarafina. Predictably all three of these Gr1 winners were sired by sons of Sadler’s Wells, the last two being by the multiple Gr1 winner Refuse To Bend. The Aga Khan’s studs showed plenty of faith in Refuse To Bend in the early part of his stallion career. The 2003 2,000 Guineas winner stood his first four seasons at a fee of €20,000 but has since left the Darley fold and stood the 2010 season at £5,000 and the 2011 at £4,500. The Aga has been rewarded with two stakes winners in Alaiyma and Sarafina, the latter now a winner of five of her eight starts following her late lunge in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Refuse To Bend was an obvious choice for Sarafina’s dam, Sanariya. The daughter of Darshaan had previously done well with Barathea, another son of Sadler’s Wells. Their daughter Sanaya showed distinct promise at two in 2005 and was a half-length second in the 2006 Prix Saint-Alary at around the time of Sarafina’s conception. Sanaya later won Listed races over nine furlongs in France and a mile in Dubai. Sarafina’s fifth dam Ad Altiora

After surprising many with his domination of Europe’s mile Classics, Galileo landed his third Irish Derby in the space of five years when Treasure Beach got the better of another Galileo colt, Seville. Treasure Beach’s win came less than a month after he had narrowly failed to provide Galileo with his second Epsom Derby victory. Treasure Beach’s victory added to Galileo’s impressive statistics with daughters of Mark Of Esteem. This combination has had seven runners from nine foals of racing age. Treasure Beach is no less than the third Group winner from the seven, following Kite Wood, a Gr2 winner who finished a good second in the 2009 St Leger, and Mikhail Glinka, winner of the Gr3 Queen’s Vase over two miles. The incentive for sending Mark Of Esteem mares to Galileo rested largely on the fact that Mark Of Esteem had won the 2,000 Guineas and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes to establish himself as the highest-rated son of Darshaan, and also one of the fastest. Darshaan’s daughters, of course, have played an unrivaled role in the success of the Sadler’s Wells male line. Although Galileo has four Group winners out of Darshaan mares, including the high-class long-distance horse Alandi, they come from a sample of 91 foals of racing age. Maybe it is Mark Of Esteem’s outstanding ability over a mile which is helping his daughters establish a superior record to that of Darshaan mares with Galileo, as Galileo appreciates some speed in his mares. Mark Of Esteem was forced into retirement after the 2006 season, having sired a Derby winner in Sir Percy, a 1,000 Guineas winner in Ameerat and a top sprinter in Reverence. Treasure Beach’s dam, Honorine, was a fairly useful handicapper at up to a mile and a quarter but she struggled on her two appearances in Listed race company. Her half-brother Indian Creek stayed well enough to win the Gr2 Hardwicke Stakes over a mile and a half at Royal Ascot, despite being by the sprinter Indian Ridge. Their dam Blue Water, by Bering, was a very useful middle-distance performer in France and so was Treasure Beach’s fourth dam, Radiance. Radiance, by the way, was by the Derby and Ascot Gold Cup winner Blakeney, who also cropped up as the broodmare sire of Mark Of Esteem’s Epsom Derby winner Sir Percy.

Acatenango achieved a remarkable double when the Deutsches Derby fell to Waldpark, a colt out of one of his daughters. Only two months earlier the Kentucky Derby had fallen to Animal Kingdom, another colt out of a daughter of the excellent German stallion. Acatenango had won the 1985 Deutsches Derby before siring three winners of the same Classic in Lando, Borgia, and Nicaron. Waldpark’s dam Wurftaube established herself as one of Acatenango’s best daughters as a three-year-old in 1996, when her victories included the Gr2 Gerling Preis and Gr2 Deutsches St Leger to share the title of champion three-yearold filly. Waldpark is Wurftaube’s best effort, but she had previously been ably represented by the Group-placed Listed winner Waldvogel and the very useful Waldmark, runner-up in the Falmouth Stakes in its days as a Gr2 contest. Waldmark’s current threeyear-old is Masked Marvel, a Listed winner at Goodwood prior to finishing eighth in the Derby, and Waldmark’s sister Waldbeere has also started well as a broodmare, producing Wiesenpfad, a six-time Gr3 winner at up to a mile and a quarter. Waldpark is now unbeaten in four starts. He is a son of Dubawi, the excellent young stallion who now has winners of the 2,000 Guineas, Italian 2,000 Guineas, Italian Derby and German Derby in his first two crops. 161 PRIX JEAN PRAT G1 CHANTILLY. The fertility problems which beset Cacique during his first season, which eventually forced his retirement, are beginning to look a serious blow to Juddmonte. Cacique’s small first crop includes Dominant, an impressive winner of the £150,000 Tattersalls Millions 3yo Cup; Slumber, placed in a pair of Gr3s; Census, a good-class stayer; and Mutual Trust, who was winning for the fourth time in as many

starts when he beat Zoffany and Strong Suit in the Gr1 Prix Jean Prat. Cacique had contested the 2004 Jean Prat, finishing second to future Arc winner Bago, whom Cacique later ran to half a length in the Grand Prix de Paris. Cacique later become a dual Gr1 winner at up to 11 furlongs after being switched to the USA aged five. He returned to commence stallion duties in 2007 alongside his brother Dansili, who ended 2006 as leading sire in France and 11th in Britain and Ireland. Coincidentally, it was a son of Dansili who filled second place behind Mutual Trust in the Jean Prat. Mutual Trust’s dam Posteritas had looked a good match for Cacique. His sire, Danehill, had done well with another mare by Posteritas’s sire Lear Fan, siring the smart Danetime, and he had also sired the smart Stronghold from a half-sister to Posteritas’s dam Imroz. Also, another mare from Posteritas’s family had produced Passage Of Time, winner of the 2006 Criterium de Saint-Cloud, to Dansili. Posteritas was a Listed winner over ten furlongs but her second dam All At Sea was much better, winning the Prix du Moulin after finishing second in the Oaks. All At Sea’s talented half-sister Quandary has served Juddmonte very well, ranking as the second dam of Twice Over, Passage Of Time, Father Time and Timepiece.

Star Runner completed a remarkable double by adding the Estrellas Classic on turf to his victory in the GP Republica Argentina on dirt in May. It was an even more remarkable performance by his trainer Ernesto Romero and rider Jose Ricardo Mendez, who had achieved the same double with Lingote de Oro last year. She had to work harder to defeat a completely new set of opponents but remains unbeaten after three outings. There was an upset in the Juvenile when Suggestive Boy outlasted Escape Of Glory and Rabid In The Rye by two short necks. Hopes were high for a second Irishtrained Belmont Stakes victory, 21 years after Go And Go. But Aidan O’Brien’s Master Of Hounds failed to build on his Kentucky Derby fifth and, ill at ease on the sloppy dirt, beat just two home. The Derby winner, Animal Kingdom, was almost brought down at the start and was virtually tailed off for much of the trip. An amazing move on the final turn got him to within two lengths of the lead before he dropped away again and he was later found to have sustained a season-ending slab fracture to his near fore leg. The $600,000 first prize went to Ruler On Ice, a blinkered-first-time 25-1 outsider whose best previous effort had been a lowly third place in the Sunland Derby in New Mexico.

In the three-year-old fillies’ division, Kiaran McLaughlin’s It’s Tricky handled conditions better than hot favourite Turbulent Descent to take the Acorn Stakes by almost four lengths, but it was the west coast that hosted the highest quality event of the month, Zazu taking her career record over her Kentucky Oaks conqueror Plum Pretty to 3-1 in the Grade 2 Hollywood Oaks. Hollywood also showcased the talents of arguably America’s best older horse, Blind Luck, who gave 3lb and a half-length beating to Switch in the Vanity Handicap to land her sixth Grade 1. Another leading older horse is Gio Ponti, but on rain-softened turf he could finish only third in the Manhattan Handicap behind Mission Approved,

who exactly one year earlier had been bought out of a claimer for $35,000. Also on the grass, Carlos LaffonParias’s Chinchon came up half a length short of February’s Gulfstream Park Turf Handicap winner Teaks North in his bid for a repeat victory in the United Nations Stakes. His fellow French raider, Stacelita, was the same margin back in third. The injury-prone Courageous Cat took the Shoemaker Mile and Bill Mott’s five-year-old has the Breeders’ Cup Mile, in which two years ago he got to within half a length of the three-time winner Goldikova as his long-term goal. Acclamation made the most of an uncontested lead to land the Charles Whittingham Memorial, while the former Sir Michael Stoute charge Giants Play,

who had won nothing more than a maiden and was beaten off a mark of 81 in handicaps in Britain, beat multiple European Pattern scorers Zagora and Hibaayeb when equipped with a net muzzle in the Grade 2 New York Stakes. Back on traditional dirt, Pool Play was the outsider of 11 runners in the Stephen Foster Handicap but picked them off one by one and got up close home by a neck. The Saeed bin Suroortrained favourite Red Ransom finished stone last having cut out the running. Todd Pletcher saddled the Stephen Foster second, Mission Impazible, but he landed two top distaff events, the Mother Goose Stakes and the Ogden Phipps Handicap, with Buster’s Ready and Awesome Maria.

Galileo’s success has received many plaudits but even by his majestic standards his leap to the top of the international table this year has been phenomenal. In the past month the Coolmore star has notched another nine Black Type Horses and five Black Type Winners, meaning the stallions in pursuit face a daunting task keeping him in sight, let alone catching up. Still, Dansili, Montjeu and Dubawi have all made headway, and with five additional BTHs the last-named and Rock Of Gibraltar had a fine month. Two newcomers merit a word. Speed sire Grand Slam has 17 BTHs and five Group Winners. Based at

Ashford Stud at $15,000, the 16-yearold is a lesser-known member of the Coolmore roster to European breeders but he has a decent record. Grand Slam has sired four Grade 1 winners led by Cajun Beat (Breeders’ Cup Sprint) and this season is responsible for Millionreasonswhy (Grade 2 Matron Stakes) and a Group 2 scorer in Argentina; he stood at Haras Vacacion. The other new entry is Monsun, the oldest in the list but always a factor even though he has never left Germany and his runners essentially compete in Europe. He has had one Group 2 winner, the filly Selkis, but Fiorente may improve that record.

BTH = black type horses; BTW = black type winners; GH = Group horses; GW = Group winners

Acclamation’s rapid progress reported here last month has continued with interest, since he now heads the list having bagged another seven winners and the earnings to go with them. His record with juveniles really is exceptional and, as second-placed Dark Angel is by him, the table is something of a benefit for the 12-year-old Rathbarry Stud stallion. The six stakes events for two-yearolds at Royal Ascot did not have a massive effect on the list. The winners were by six different sires, though Best Terms and Power helped Exceed And Excel and Oasis Dream respectively.

Galileo could beat 2010 total but he’s not top on all counts It is a comment on Galileo’s dominance that even without Treasure Beach he would still be well clear of the field. Second-placed Montjeu and thirdplaced Dalakhani put together are some way short of his total. Having the title race sewn up with over three months of the Pattern season to run, with his earnings more than doubling in July, is remarkable and with all the ammunition at his disposal Galileo must be in with a chance of beating his tally for 2010. This time last year he had progeny earnings of £2,471,806. His final figure was in excess of £6 million. Galileo is not top in every respect though. He has had more stakes horses than any of the others, 25, but in stakes winners he is joint-second with Montjeu behind Dansili and in percentage of stakes winners he is equal with Shamardal behind Monsun (8.4%), Dansili (8.2%), Montjeu (7.6%) and Dubawi (6%). There hasn’t been a great deal of movement elsewhere in the table and perhaps the most interesting sire is High Chaparral, for whom So You Think has been flying the flag with such gusto. High Chaparral has now had five Group 1 scorers in Australia and New Zealand but just one, Redwood, who has raced entirely in the northern hemisphere. That will surely change and at €25,000 he was far from overpriced this year.
