ASEAN Becoming a Hub of Research and Innovation: Southeast Asia Nearly Doubles Its Share of the World’s Research Papers ASEAN is becoming a hub of research and innovation activity, with its share of the world’s research papers having nearly doubled since 2006 and patenting activity having grown by over 40 per cent in the past three years, according to a study conducted by Thomson Reuters. A key component in Southeast Asia's progress in science and innovation is collaboration with other nations, especially co-authorship with the European Union and North America. Europe Leads 2016 Global Innovation Index: Switzerland, Sweden, Finland, and the UK in the Top Five. Switzerland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Finland and Singapore lead the 2016 rankings in the Global Innovation Index (GII), released on August 15 by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). For the past nine years the GII has surveyed the innovative capacity of 100-plus countries across the globe. More information here.
Thailand - France: Young Researcher Fellowship Program. Call Now Open. Deadline 25 October, 2016 The Junior Research Fellowship Program aims at jumpstarting the career of young Thai researchers by giving them the opportunity to develop promising collaboration with their French counterparts. This program supports Thai Post Docs to spend between 2 to 6 months working at a laboratory in France. Thai candidates must be completed their PhD by February, 2017 prior to leaving for France. Singapore - France - 2016 Merlion Call for bilateral collaboration. Call open until 15 September 2016 The PHC Merlion Program is a joint French-Singaporean collaboration, managed by the Institut Français de Singapour, in partnership with Singaporean institutions to encourage and support new scientific research development between French and Singaporean laboratories, through funding the scientists' trip exchanges. United Kingdom: the 2017 RSAA Travel and Adventure Award to Support Travel in Asia. Deadline 11 November, 2016 The Award is to encourage individual purposeful travel in Asia by young people, organized by themselves and not part of a group organized by another organization. Applicants should submit a plan of a project involving travel in a country or countries of Asia and relating to the geography, history, politics, environmental conservation, culture or art of the area to be visited. United Kingdom: Chevening Scholarships. Call Now Open. Deadline 8 November, 2016 Chevening is the UK government's international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types of award - Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships the recipients of which are personally selected by British Embassies and High Commissions throughout the world. Europe: EUI Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellowships in the Social Science and Humanities. Deadline 25 October The Max Weber Programme is the largest international postdoctoral programme in the Social Sciences and Humanities in Europe. It offers around 50-55 fully funded Fellowships to qualified researchers from anywhere in the world. The majority of Max Weber Fellowships are for one year. Details here.
United Kingdom: Newton Fund Researcher Links: Travel Grants Programme for Researchers in Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, and Vietnam. Deadline 19 September, 2016 Researcher Links Travel Grants provide financial support for early-career researchers to undertake an international research placement to strengthen links for future collaboration, build research capacity in developing economies, and enhance the researcher's career opportunities. Visits of 1-6 months may be funded depending on the country. Details here.
