HOMEWORK POLICY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Homework Guidelines § § § § § §

The habit of daily reading in English or Spanish has a positive impact on students’ long-term reading success. (reading logs specify expectations for each language) Homework reinforces skills and habits learned in the classroom. Homework exposes parents to the school’s curriculum. Homework time is limited in order for students to develop interests outside of school and spend time with family and friends. Homework can be completed independently by the student. Homework grades reflect students’ abilities to engage in positive study habits.

Student Responsibilities

Teacher Responsibilities § Provide timely feedback. § Collaborate with colleagues to ensure consistency across the grade level. § Monitor time taken to complete homework assignments. § Select appropriate, meaningful tasks that reinforce classroom learning. § Differentiate homework to meet students’ needs. (difficulty, amount, structure, scaffolding, interest, learning style, time) § Include unit test reviews as part of homework (as appropriate) § Establish and update a clear system for communicating weekly homework.

§ Show responsibility by completing and returning homework on time. § Show responsibility by bringing home everything that they need to complete their homework. § Show assertion by communicating with the teacher if their homework is too easy or too hard. § Show excellence by attempting difficult homework. § Show honesty by completing their homework.

Tips for Parents § § § § § §

Establish a positive, calm and consistent homework routine in a place where students can access necessary supplies (pencil, eraser, etc.). Monitor, but do not actively complete, your child’s homework. Talk to the teacher if homework consistently exceeds established time frames. Communicate with the teacher if your child does not understand homework. Include reading to your child as part of your weekly routine. Regularly check teacher communication (agendas, webpages or emails).
