hidden digital minefields: exposed kids, Naïve adults Use the following to guide your notetaking. Digital citizenship should just be part of citizenship. Every aspect of citizenship has a digital aspect now. Shannon Mclintock-Miller • •
We should wake up and realize that kids have access to more concerning things than some adults comprehend. Kids need to have the confidence to come to a parent, guardian or teacher at school about things they see online even as young as kindergarten. The greatest software ever invented is the human brain. Why is a digital citizenship curriculum necessary? So we know that students are getting the skills they need to be safe. That encompasses digital citizenship and information and technology literacy.
Not just the kids, but also the teachers. We also must give those skills to the parents. Shannon shares her three-year-old child’s experience looking up minions and how sharing such simple stories can drive conversations about digital citizenship. Digital citizenship can’t just be implemented when something bad happens, it must be part of our curriculum.
Oversharing means to “reveal an inappropriate amount of information about a one’s personal life.” •
What are the dangers of oversharing to students?
•
What happened at Shannon’s school when they implemented 1:1 that required them to adjust their curriculum? What did they have to add relating to oversharing?
•
A key aspect of successful digital citizenship is having honest conversations with students about appropriate behavior. Building a culture of respect is part of digital citizenship.
