The End (of the year)

is Near! “The end is near!” Well, sort of. Especially in these ways: ‣ 2015 is almost over! ‣ Slowly, but steadily we’re running out of money.

The Situation The year is soon to conclude. We at First Trinity certainly do a lot of helping. But now we need help, too. We’ve been teaching classes, feeding people, giving out clothing, celebrating 150 years, restoring basement space for the kids (for the kids!), having camp, teaching yoga, singing hymns all over the neighborhood, praying, speaking-out, welcoming as-best-wecan, and other First-Trinity specialties. And we’ve been using resources along the way. On top of that, we’ve been paying our bills, electric, gas, water; fixing our walls, updating our lighting, and sinks and toilets, and all of the other fun and frequent fixes that come with the utilization of our lovely, 100-year old campus, a gift from those who came before us.

…we continue in our attempt to live the gospel and to serve our neighbors…

As we continue in our attempt to live the gospel and to serve our neighbors, (and as we take a step back to look at the books), here is what we see: We are about $30,000 from where we need to be—that means we’ve been tapping reserves, and cutting corners. We think we can do better. VISIT FIRSTTRINITYCHICAGO.COM, CLICK DONATE

THE END OF 2015

END OF YEAR APPEAL

The Severity According to our estimates, if we don’t raise some additional revenue, we’ll be out of money in a couple of years (approximately 2-3). What’s that mean? Well, it means, if we get to that point in 2-3 years, we’ll have to consider some severe decisions—perhaps shutting down, or some other radical thing: going without any pastor or staff, or without heat or ministry, becoming one of those one-per-week kinda of churches, “worship-only” then send the people out on their way. So, yeah, you know: it means we’re in a bit of a crisis, that we need to get on track to get to the future we all want to get to together. In other words, it means we have an opportunity.

The Opportunity Vicar Toby recently reminded us that the word “crisis” comes from the Greek word for “decision.” Certainly decision is not a word unfamiliar to the First Trinity community. Over the last several years we have made clear choices for the life of this congregation and for the life of the greater community. We chose to call a pastor after over a …the word “crisis” decade of going without. We chose to invest in a new roof, tuck-pointing, a wheel chair ramp, comes from the plaster work, and several other significant repairs Greek word for to our 100 year old, aging building—all risks for “decision.” us, indicating our faith in God’s call for our mission and ministry into the future, into the next 150 years. We chose to become the first and only congregation in our community to publicly welcome all people, regardless of documentation status, race, class, gender identity or sexual orientation. We chose to welcome youth in a new way, creating new spaces, sending kids to camp, having Jesus and Justice summer camp at church, and other fun activities. We choose each week and each moment to continue in our work among the poor, hosting meals, providing free clothing, and fostering community that crosses boundaries of class and race. Each day is a choice to continue in the work God has set before us. As we find ourselves shorter on cash, but in no way lacking in desire to live out God’s call in a unique way, the choice seems pretty clear.

END OF YEAR APPEAL

The Choice / The Call So, we’re calling on all of you. Members, friends, fans, puzzled on-lookers-from-adistance. Those of you who say “If I went to church I’d go to your church,” those who are afraid that the ceiling would cave in if you came in, (but that’s really not true); folks who follow us on Facebook, folks who used to worship here but now live several states or cities or neighborhoods away; folks who come here for community organizing meetings, AA, Books to Prisoners, belly dancing, punk shows, LGBTQ-AI EVENTS, storytellings, yoga, movie nights, baptisms, birthday parties, community meals, or God’s Closet—or whatever other reasons you find yourself in this special place, among these special people, online or in-the-flesh, or in memories you return to every now and again; we’re calling on you, and on your institutions—churches, schools, businesses, firms… Donate! The end in near! And you can make the new year happy, and support this place and this ministry, which, let’s face it, you rely on and care about, and you know is here when you need it or when you get the Trinity urge.

The Goal (You made the right choice!) So reach deep, people. We want to raise $30,000 by January 1. We’d love to raise more, actually, so please don’t hold back. But, well, here’s where we’re starting. This will get us caught up, and it will push us into the new year with the resources we need to continue making First Trinity happen. Can you give? Can your parents give? Can you ask them to give? What about your business? Your school? Does your church want to support a unique, vibrant, active, church in the city? Well have we got a church for you! (This one). You can mail us a check. Or you can go to FirstTrinityChicago.com and simply click “DONATE.” Pretty simple. And, as you know, it goes a long way. On the following page is a list of “stuff you can pay for.” It’s there to give you an idea of some of the things your money will help fund. This list isn’t exhaustive. But it’s an incomplete snapshot of the awesome you help provide when you give to this unique ministry and mission in Bridgeport, Chicago. If you, your church, or institution would like to sign up to be a regular supporter, awesome! We need you! And we’d be more than happy to come out and visit you and share with you our passion and our love for God’s mission in this place. THANK YOU, friends and neighbors. We can’t do this without you, and we thank you for your ongoing support, prayers, and gifts to the life and ministry of First Trinity! In God’s Peace. Rev. Tom Gaulke
