Administrative Procedure 290

EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH Background The district recognizes that learning and teaching are improved through research and therefore values its relationships with colleges, universities, agencies and individuals engaged in this work. The district supports and encourages, participation in and the use of, professional educational research and data. Procedures 1. Any research study must receive the prior approval of the chief superintendent or designate. 1.1

Teachers, administrators and other staff are encouraged to cooperate with researchers who have been approved by the district.

1.2

If the study involves students, parents/legal guardians must also agree that their child will participate. 1.2.1

In cases where researchers will be interacting directly with students, the researcher is expected to supply a current police check prior to undertaking their work.

2. In determining the acceptance or rejection of a research proposal, the following will be kept in mind: 2.1

Research will be of potential value to teaching and learning within the district

2.2

Researchers will abide by the inherent values of a Catholic school system

2.3

Research conducted in the district will not unduly interfere with the learning environment

2.4

There are to be a limited number of research projects in any one school during the school year

2.5

Incomplete applications will not be considered and returned. If re-submitted, must be completed in full

2.6

Calendar dates for submissions are October 15, January 15, March 15, May 15

3. The Committee will meet at the end of October, January, March and May. The requirements for research proposals are outlined in the Appendix. Any individual making a request to do research within the Calgary Catholic School District will complete the required application forms 290-1​ and ​290-2​. 4. The Werklund School of Education at the University of Calgary and the district have entered into an agreement recognizing that Partner Research Schools are dynamic collaborations

among schools, communities and universities leading innovation through research-active inquiry and practice. 4.1

Research requests from this faculty will be required to submit complete forms and will be assessed for approval upon receipt.

5. All research studies will respect confidentiality and abide by the conditions set out in the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP). 5.1

Forms ​290-2​ and ​290-3​ provide background information and the requirements with regard to accessing personal information.

5.2

Form ​290-3​ must be signed if there is any access to personal information required.
