The general theory of the subject and its application to polynomial approximation are classical, but piecewise polynomials have become far more useful during the last twenty years. Thus many important theoretical properties have been found recently and many new techniques for the automatic calculation of approximations to prescribed accuracy have been developed. This book gives a thorough and coherent introduction to the theory that is the basis of current approximation methods. Professor Powell describes and analyses the main techniques of calculation supplying sufficient motivation throughout the book to make it accessible to scientists and engineers who require approximation methods for practical needs. Great balance between theory, motivation and practice. By Adam L. Schwartz I used this book in grad school to study up on numerical approximations. In my engineering career, subsequently, I've read other books on the topic but have finally come back to this one. This book is so well organized and thought out that it is a pleasure to read. It also contains the right level of theoretical and practical information that is needed for someone comfortable with math. The book does not go into details on finite-precision arithmetic so you'll need a complementary book for that if those issues are relevant for you. Even if you don't _need_ to know this stuff it is still really interesting and worth reading about. This is the right book at the right level for doing that.
