Character Collage: Eastern Religions

Directions: You will work in groups 2‐3 to create a character collage for the Buddha, Confucius, or Laozi that represents  the main ideas of Buddhism, Confucianism, or Daoism.  A character collage is an outline of a historical figure, within and  around which are carefully arranged key ideas, symbols, and illustrations that represent the beliefs of the person.  You  will receive a written summary of the belief system and key quotes from your historical figure on which to base your  character collage.  Your collage should be created to give viewers a clear understanding of the basic ideas and values of  the character and belief system.      1. Read Student Handout 1.1D aloud.  Discuss the “Stop Here and Discuss” questions. Write down the answers in  your logbook.    2. Brainstorm ideas for what to include in the character collage.  By examining your character collage, your  classmates should be able to “read” it and understand the key ideas of the belief system.  Your collage must  include   At least five key words or phrases that represent main ideas of the belief system.   At least five visual elements‐ illustrations, symbols, pictures‐ that represent main ideas of the belief  system.   Paraphrases (restatements in simpler words) of each quote on Student Handout 1.1D that are simple,  memorable, and easily understood by a teenager.    3. Brainstorm ideas for how to lay out the  contents of the character collage.  After your  group brainstorms ideas for what to include  on the character collage, discuss how to  arrange the words and phrases, visuals, and  paraphrases.  These can be placed within or  outside of the outline of the character, but  should be arranged in a way that helps the  viewer better understand the main ideas of  the belief system.  The format of your  character collage should reflect the beliefs of  your character.  For example, if your character  valued neatness, the contents of the collage  would be arranged in an especially orderly  fashion.    4. Create a rough draft of the character collage.   On a standard‐size piece of paper, quickly  create a rough draft of the character collage.   Review it with your teacher to receive  feedback on it.    5. Sketch the outline of your historical figure.   Have the Illustrator sketch the outline of your  historical figure on a large piece of unlined  paper.  Tape of glue the drawing of the figure’s  Example – Martin Luther King, Jr. face (Student Handout 1.1F) on the outline.    6. Create your character collage.  Work neatly and carefully to create the final version of your character collage.   Use color and other creative touches to make the collage visually appealing.
