Lesson Theme:

Early fraction sense via halving, quartering, thirding; building number combination fluency through doubling Warm Ups / Games:

Make pizza puzzles cut into halves, thirds, and fourths; have the children fit them together. (Can use paper plates and have children make their own paper pizzas - use markers for toppings to avoid losing lesson focus). Materials: Use fraction manipulatives you have in the classroom. Lesson Objective:

Describe (fractional) parts of whole objects or groups of objects Questions to Guide Students:

What is an even number? What is an odd number? What is half of one? What does half mean? (Definition: Two parts the same.) How do you find half of a number? Use plastic counters that are split in half. What is half of a half? (a fourth) How do you write half of 7? Activities:

Draw a picture of a whole pizza; then a half. Fold symmetrical paper cutouts in half, then in fourths. Use "even" and "odd" vocabulary and identify one as an odd number (odd numbers are odd because they don't have whole number partners). Practice taking half of even numbers by working with 2, 4, 6. Illustrate "half of odd numbers" by splitting a five into two groups of two and halving the one that is left. Suggested Reading:
