January 1998 – August 2004 | Graduate Research Associate, Department of Forestry & Oklahoma Cooperative Fish & Wildlife Research Unit, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma Committee: Dr. Fred S. Guthery (Chair), Dr. Samuel D. Fuhlendorf, Dr. Stanley F. Fox, Dr. Ronald Masters, and Dr. Robert L. Lochmiller (Deceased). Conducted research on bobwhite and scaled quail population dynamics in relation to climatic conditions using neural network modeling techniques. This project used roadside count data collected in Texas over a 20-year period and in Oklahoma over a 6-year period to develop predictive models for use by state management agencies in predicting quail population levels. The resulting model can be used to predict population levels using temperature and precipitation data. Models were also used to predict potential effects of global-change scenarios on bobwhites in Oklahoma and Texas, and to determine the relative importance of weather and climate to quail abundance. Conducted research on cause-specific survival and movement patterns of bobwhites using data collected during a 10-year project on the Packsaddle Wildlife Management Area in western Oklahoma. Modeled the effects of climate and weather on turkey hen-poult ratios in Texas. June 1997 - December 1997 | Researcher II, Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois Collected and analyzed data on mourning dove use of public shooting fields in southern and central Illinois in response to experimental hunting hour regimes. Collected and analyzed human dimension data dealing with hunter attitudes and opinions of hunting hour changes in Illinois. Coordinated data collection among 21 public hunting sites in central and southern Illinois. Prepared Federal Aid Annual Progress reports for mourning dove project. Provided logistic and technical support to graduate students conducting studies of the physiological consequences of hunting hour regimes for mourning doves in Illinois (drew blood samples from harvested doves for radio-immunoassays, and helped maintain a captive colony of doves), and of hunter selectivity for specific age classes of white-tailed deer (collected reproductive tracks of harvested does at deer-hunter check stations). Generated thematic maps using TNT Mips and ArcView GIS for use by the Lab’s Mined Lands Reclamation division in environmental assessments. Duties included feature mapping aerial photographs, georeferencing aerial photographs and digitized topographical maps, constructing thematic layers from US Census Bureau TIGER and National Wetland Inventory data, and preparing map layouts for assessment statements. June 1995 - June 1997 | Graduate Research Assistant, Cooperative Wildlife Research Laboratory, Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois Committee: Dr. Alan Woolf (Chair; Deceased), Dr. Walter J. Jakubas (Co-Chair), and Mr. John Roseberry Collected and analyzed data on changes in mourning dove use of public hunting areas, foraging behavior, and vigilance behavior in response to experimental hunting hour regimes in southern and central Illinois as part of thesis research. Collected and analyzed human dimensions data pertaining to hunter attitudes and opinions about hunting hour changes in Illinois as part of Research Assistantship. Coordinated data collection activities and personnel at 21 public hunting sites in central and southern Illinois. Prepared Federal Aid Annual Progress reports for mourning dove project. Assisted graduate students with research activities including small mammal trapping for short-tailed shrews, trapping and banding mourning doves, assisting with captive vole colony maintenance, and capturing wood ducks for radio-transmitter attachment.

Fall 1990 - Spring 1991 | Undergraduate Research Assistant, Department of Biological Sciences and the Honors College, University of Illinois at Chicago, Chicago, Illinois Advisors: Dr. Joel S. Brown and Dr. Christopher J. Whelan Designed and implemented a research project to study the foraging behavior of gray squirrels at the Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois. Research applied Dr. Brown’s model of foraging behavior to determine the effects of foraging tray height on the costs and benefits of foraging. VI.
