To Go 1. Deny the craving of your flesh this week and replace it with seeking God through His Word or prayer. 2. Think through a typical day and take note of the various ways you identify your life with Christ. How big is your cross, really? 3. Read John 15 and count the number of times the word abide is mentioned. 4. Be honest about what you know God is asking you to do and do it.

Quick Review Following the feeding of the 5,000, Jesus’ disciples argued over who would be the greatest in the kingdom of God. Jesus pulled the men away from the crowds into a place where they could be alone. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record a moment where the men are challenged that to inherit the kingdom of God, they must die to selfish ambition for power, prestige, and position. Jesus invites His disciples to a radical departure from the world’s system of getting all that you can in this life. This pattern of self-seeking started in the garden in Genesis 3 and must be traded in for something better, namely seeking the Kingdom of God through abandoning self and trusting God for a Kingdom which is yet to come.

What images come to mind when you think of what it means to, “identify with Christ?”

Scan these three passages and set the context for Jesus’ statement that his disciples are to take up their cross. Do you notice any differences in the context? Why would anyone want to take up their cross and follow Jesus when it requires death to self?

In Romans 6 we read that we are dead to sin and alive to Christ (6:1-14). Is there a specific area of your life where you need to be reminded that sin no longer has authority over you? Remember this week that you are made alive in Jesus, free to live, free to obey, free to experience the grace of God.
