PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE WELCOME This week we welcomed SHILOH SMITH to our school and into Room 1. Shiloh is our last new entrant for 2017 and she has really enjoyed her first 2 days at school.

Student Council We held a meeting yesterday and confirmed we now have $262.00 toward the swing. If any parent has some strong wood that could make a T Frame for the swing to attach to. It would help us ensure we can get this swing up and going before the end of term. Please contact Mrs Eastwood if you can help us. Thank you Mr Eastwood for putting up the new nets for the basketball hoops, the marking of the cricket pitch and repairing the hockey/soccer goals. Everyone is enjoying them. Hannah Tait

RESTORATIVE PRACTICE RESILIENCE DEVELOPMENT Learning from our own mistakes Making mistakes is a normal part of life. Taking responsibility and facing up to our mistakes is a great way to learn, and to avoid doing the same thing again. But if you’re dwelling on your mistakes and it’s getting you down, there are things you can do.Here are a few of them. Accepting our mistakes Fortunately, there are some handy tips to help us deal with making a mistake. You are not your mistake When you make a mistake, keep in mind that it doesn’t mean anything about who you are as a person. Try not to jump to conclusions about your worth or value. No one’s perfect, and that’s okay. Be honest with yourself and others When you make a mistake, don’t hide the fact and don’t try to sugar-coat it. Even though it’s often a really difficult thing to do, it’s important that you accept full responsibility for your actions. The sooner you fess up, the sooner you can get yourself back on track. If you’re making excuses for yourself, you’ll probably just prolong this process. Recognise exactly what you did wrong Are you aware of exactly what went wrong? If you’re confused about something, it’s worth having a chat to someone else who’s involved so that you’re totally sure of what not to do next time. Think about ways you might be able to fix or improve the situation So, you made a mistake. Now what? If possible, have a think about some of the conversations you could have, or things you could do, to improve the situation. You might find that you can smooth some things over and that it’s not as bad as you initially thought. Talk about it with others When you make a really big mistake, don’t feel that you have to cope with it on your own. Talk to friends or family about it. They might be able to offer you some encouragement, insights or advice that will make you feel better. Can’t stop dwelling on your mistakes? If you’ve tried doing these things, and you’re having a lot of trouble accepting your mistakes and moving on, there might be something else going on at a deeper level. SPORT

Yesterday was a busy, active day at the Central Otago athletics sports. It was windy, cold - but warm at times - and there were people everywhere. St Gerard's children did our school proud - every competitor put in big efforts to compete against the other schools attending. Jack O'Connor was placed 1st = in Long Jump and 1st in Hurdles. The boys under 10 relay team came 1st - Olivia Dyson was 3rd in her Hurdles final. Olly Lyon was 3rd in Hurdles and High Jump, Lachie Diack was 3rd in sprints. Kimberley Dacosta and Rafferty Love got 2nd in the 800m. Keira McFadyen came 2nd in the hurdles final. Adam Ward was placed 3rd in High Jump. Seb Waldron placed 3rd in Long Jump. A big thanks to our fabulous parents who gave up their own time to come along before the sports to coach our kids in their specific events. Thanks to Viannee Galbreath for your champion coaching effort with all of the relay teams. Also to Kerrie Fahey for her awesome effort with the Long Jumpers and Mr Eastwood and Nadia DuPlessis for their help with the throws. To the parents who helped out yesterday - pats on the back to you! Well done to everyone who competed, battled their nerves and managed to get themselves off to their events on time - it was a juggle for sure. Soccer Coaching Next Wednesday 15th November 2 soccer coaches will be at school and each class will have a 30 minute session. Be sure to wear your school sports uniform on this day.

ENVIRO GROUP Today Mr Yeoman and his Enviro team had a busy day planting out the native garden at the front of the school. They were helped by parents and members of the Clyde Rail Head along with each class. Hannah Tait and Charis Morrell gave the children a short lesson on the different plants and which were bird friendly, moth friendly, skink friendly etc. We can’t wait to see the transformation at the end of the day.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Several of our Yr 5-8 pupils have been working with Maxine Williams for several Wednesday afternoons, developing different art skills. These sessions culminated in a session last Wednesday morning at the Thyme Festival, working on a large mural. The students have done an amazing job. Keep you're eyes out for this mural around town. A digital reproduction will appear, most likely on the wall of the public toilets at Molyneux park. Thanks to these students for their amazing work and their part in brightening up our town! The original is here at school and students will decide where it will be hung. This project was kindly funded by Central Otago District Arts Trust and the Central Otago District Council.
