Volcano Project Criteria

Project Due: 1st Block 10/21/14, 2nd Block 10/22/14, 3rd Block 10/23/14

1. Students should research the types of volcanoes studied in sixth grade and then indicate the type of volcano they selected for the project. 2. Volcanoes must contain a title or label. Types: cinder cone, composite, or shield. 3. Volcanoes must be three-dimensional working model. 4. Volcanoes need to be in color (realistic colors) – you are encouraged to use many different materials to create your volcano. Materials can be household items, they do not have to be purchased at a craft supply stores. Be creative and use recyclable items. 5. Volcanoes need to be on a platform or base. 6. Volcanoes will be evaluated on content – accuracy, presentation (must be able to correctly answer questions about the volcano), creativity, problem solving and explanation.

Students have a working, three dimensional volcano. The volcano is correctly labeled with a title and has an accurate description about the type of volcano selected. Description must be typed or written in pen. The volcano must contain realistic colors and texture. Creativity must be evident. (Students were able to correctly answer every question about the volcano they selected.) B Students have a working, three dimensional volcano. The volcano is correctly labeled with a title and has a vague description of the type of volcano. Description must be typed or written in pen. The volcano contains realistic colors and texture. Creativity is evident. (Students were able to correctly answer most questions about the volcano they selected.) C Students have a working, three dimensional volcano. The volcano is correctly labeled with a title and has a vague description of the type of volcano. Description is typed or written in pen. The volcano contains colors, but they are not all realistic colors. Creativity is evident. (Students were able to answer most questions about the volcano they selected.) D Students have a working, three dimensional volcano. The volcano lacks a title or label and/or is missing a description of the volcano they selected. The volcano contains colors that are not realistic. Lack of creativity. (Students are unable to answer most of the questions about the volcano they selected.) F Students have a nonworking, three dimensional volcano or did not complete a working volcano. The nonworking volcano is not properly labeled or lacks an accurate description. The colors are not realistic or contain no texture. Lack of creativity. (Students were not able to correctly answer questions about their volcano.) IMPORTANT: Students missing any assignments in science will not be allowed to go outside and erupt their volcano. This rubric must be signed by the student and the parent before 10/10/14 or the student must do a research paper on a volcano. I am trying to teach students to be responsible.
