Term 4 Week 10 13 December 2017

Dear Parents and Caregivers

As this is the last newsletter for the year I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone in our school community for their support this year. We have a wonderful community spirit here at St Joseph’s which is highly evident in your attendance at school events and presence on the playground. Our school continues to grow and we are looking forward to an exciting year in 2018.

Mary MacKillop St Mary of the Cross Australia’s first Saint Born on 15 January 1842 in Melbourne Died 8 August 1909 CANONISED 17th October 2010

Next year, due to increased enrolments, we have three grades moving to three streams; Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 4. To accommodate this growth there will be some movement of classrooms to ensure that the three stream grades are placed together. The single storey building which currently houses Year 3, Year 1 and Year 6 will be Year 4 and Year 1 for 2018. Kindergarten, Year 2 and Year 5 will remain in their current rooms. Year 3 will move into the current Year 4 classrooms. Year 6 will be in the demountable classrooms on the grass playground. The second demountable will arrive in the January school holidays. There will also be some some renovation works occurring during the holidays. As a result of a Revitalisation grant from Sydney Catholic Schools the Year 2 classrooms will be repainted, have new carpet laid and have new glass sliding doors installed between the classrooms to ‘open up’ the classrooms. The remainder of the grant will be spent on replacing the Smartboards for Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 3 with 75 inch Interactive television screens. Also during the holidays there will be a new (much needed) PA system installed and I would like to thank the P & F for their generous help in providing the funds for this. Lastly, the main corridor which runs past the Year 4 and 5 classrooms will be repainted and recarpeted during the holidays as well. STEM INQUIRY CENTRE In 2018 we have plans underway to use our Library space as a STEM (Science, Technology, Maths and Engineering) learning centre. Mrs Cripps and Mrs Meadley will be taking the Primary classes once a week for an hour for Terms 1 and 2 and the Infants classes in Terms 3 and 4.

FAREWELL TO STAFF   As happens in most organisations from time to time there is staff movement due to promotions, moving to a different part of Sydney and moving to a new setting for personal growth in your career.   This year we have a few staff who are moving on from St Joseph’s Riverwood. All staff who are leaving will be acknowledged and affirmed at a Liturgy at our Friday morning assembly tomorrow.  “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His Name” (Lk 1:49)

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Week 10! Where did the year go? It has been an exciting year and I feel very blessed to be part of such a wonderful community. I hope that you are all able to take some time over the coming weeks to enjoy spending time with your family and hopefully some beautiful weather. Thank you for your continued support this year. Wishing you all a happy and holy Christmas.    S.T.E.M- Inquiring Minds    STEM education is the learning of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in an interdisciplinary or integrated approach. Students gain and apply knowledge, deepen their understanding and develop creative and critical thinking skills within an authentic context. It may include inquiry and project-based learning.  A vibrant capacity in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) is pivotal to increasing our nation’s productivity.  "Australia’s STEM teachers at all levels, from primary to tertiary, must be equipped to deliver course content with confidence and inspiration, and develop all students to their full potential. Curricula and assessment criteria should prioritise curiosity-driven and problem-based learning of STEM - STEM as it is practised - alongside the subject specific knowledge that STEM requires."

Professor Ian Chubb, Chief Scientist  Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics: Australia’s Future 2014

Next year all students across the school will have the opportunity to   participate in the S.T.E.M program. Mrs Nicole Cripps and myself will be running these lessons and our library will become our Inquiring Minds Centre and the place where our S.T.E.M lessons will take place. Mrs Cripps and I are very excited about S.T.E.M and we look forward to sharing with you all that is happening in our Inquiring Minds Centre next year. Watch this space!

A very special prayer intention

All our students are very important to us and while we celebrate their successes, most importantly we support them in their times of need. Our young student Andrew Rustom in 3 MacKillop is undergoing a serious and important surgery on Friday morning. We are asking everyone in the community to remember Andrew in their prayers for a successful outcome and speedy recovery. We will gather as a staff on Friday morning before school to pray a Novena Prayer for Andrew’s special intentions.    A Novena is a type of prayer that we pray, usually over nine days with great fervour and devotion, in time of great need, trusting in the mystery of God’s compassionate love and care. The Novena prayer, however, does not have to be prayed over nine consecutive days and of course can continue for longer than nine days. The essential element is the prayer. You can pray in your own words or use the following prayer:

Ever generous God,  You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop  To live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ  And constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those  Who were disheartened, lonely or needy.  With confidence in Your generous providence  And joining with Saint Mary MacKillop  We ask that You grant our request    For strength and healing of Andrew    We ask that our faith and hope  Be fired afresh by the Holy Spirit  So that we too, like Mary MacKillop,  May live with courage, trust and openness.  Ever generous God hear our prayer.  We ask this through Jesus Christ.  Amen.

A wonderful example of social outreach    An important focus for us at St Joseph’s in 2017 has been social outreach to those in the wider community, less fortunate than ourselves. We have done this in many ways in our school community through Project Compassion, the Vinnies Winter and Christmas Appeals, the Charitable Works Fund and the Gethsemane Community. It is also wonderful to hear that some of our families have undertaken helping others in need through organisations that they are involved in themselves.

“The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His Name”

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR CONT’D We would like to acknowledge the generous efforts of the Vasiliou family who made a significant contribution to a recent charity event known as ‘Our Big Kitchen’. Deanna, Liani and Victoria took part in the preparation and packaging of over 500 meals, which were delivered to Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church’s Community Kitchen in Newtown. This Community Kitchen is run by Father Nektarios Zorbalas, and helps to feed the poor and less fortunate within Newtown and the surrounding communities, irrespective of faith.  Rita Bratanis, President of the Thessaloniki & Environs Association wrote to the school to express their gratitude for the contribution of the girls in making their social outreach effort a big success. Our school community can be very proud of the girls.  VINNIES CHRISTMAS APPEAL Thank you to everyone who has donated to the Vinnies Christmas Appeal.   We have been able to fill many hampers with delicious food and some treats for Christmas.

Our generous support of Vinnies is a very important part of St Joseph’s Outreach Program and assists us to fulfil the Archbishop’s Charter for Catholic Schools, in particular Principle 5: Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Sydney are called to “teach students to know, understand and act on Catholic social teaching, in particular the preferential option for the poor’ ….”  SCAPULAR INVESTITURE   Congratulations to the following children who received the Scapular of Our Lady of Mount Carmel on Wednesday evening 29th November at our special Thanksgiving Mass for our Parish Catechists.    Rachel Alexander, Juliet Apostolou, Nathan Azzi, Isabelle Clancy, Roy Daylusan, Christopher Droguett-Bugden, Gaia El Khabbaz, Nathan Hazari, Matthew Ippolito, Josephine Kitoko, Jeriah Leger, Vanessa Macchia, Chase Mahara-Piggott, Jayden Mahara-Piggott, Lain Martin, Michelle Martono, Kane Morris, Marceline Oendy, Leah Panagakis, Nicholas Rossini, Klara Tadic, Jessica Zhen, Veronica Zhen and Justin Zingovski.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR CONT’D A HEARTFELT THANK YOU    I find it a little hard to believe that this is the last newsletter I will write to you as the Religious Education Coordinator of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School Riverwood.    I would like to take this opportunity to express my love and deep gratitude for the staff, students and families of this wonderful community. I have been truly blessed to have worked with you these past 17 years - Did I say 17 years? - Can this be right? - I believe it is so!   I think this amount of time is testament to how quickly time can fly when you have the privilege to serve a community who is as generous, caring and supportive as you are.  Thank you from the bottom of my heart for allowing me to share in your families’ lives in such significant ways.    I would especially like to thank Father John, Margaret Grainger, the Parish Secretary and the Catechists who have been wonderful to work with. I am very touched and grateful for the beautiful gesture by the Catechists of enrolling my name in the ‘Golden Book’ at the Shrine of St John Bosco Engadine. Mass is offered every first Sunday of the month for the intentions of all who have been enrolled. I truly appreciate this gift. I have also been especially touched by the many beautiful gifts and best wishes I have received. It is very humbling and I treasure every lovely sentiment you have shared.    I am embarking on a new opportunity about which I am excited and happy, however the St Joseph’s community of students, families, parish and of course, my colleagues, will always be very special to me and will always have a place in my thoughts and prayers.    I wish everyone the joy, peace and blessings of the Christmas season and I entrust you all in God’s loving care.

Peace and best wishes Robyn Green

SPBL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

SPBL At St Joseph’s we are in our second year of the School wide Positive Behaviour for Learning program. SPBL is a well researched program and is supported by Staff from Sydney Catholic Schools, Eastern Region Office. Although we have achieved a lot over the last two years, we have much more to achieve to grow our SPBL program in our school. We have been gathering feedback to determine ways we can grow, improve and adapt our program to best suit our school.    Highlights of the program so far:   Introduction of “Joeys” and Bronze awards   Some children have already reached “Silver” level and certificates will be presented early in

2018   Noticeable improvement in behaviour on the playground and under the COLA   Introduction of “class of the week”   New signage written in positive language for children to see   Mufti colour house day for the winning colour at the end of each term

Looking forward:   Plans to improve systems for rewarding children with “Joeys” to ensure it is fair across the

school.   Include student representatives into the program.   Positive rewards for good behaviour in the classrooms

Congratulations to the Green Colour House children who celebrated with a mufti day on Wednesday.  “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and holy is His Name” (Lk 1:49)
