NEWSLETTER Term 3 Week 10 21 September 2016

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Mary MacKillop St Mary of the Cross

Over the last few weeks I have had occasion to speak with a number of students both individually and as a class to remind them of how important it is to speak to each other and about one another with kindness and respect. As we read in Genesis, God created us in His image, and one of the tenets of our belief is that all people are worthy of respect. The reflection I have included below made me stop and think about the priorities reflected by my own words and actions. As we work towards giving our students the skills to make their way in the world I pray that we can equip them with the balance of knowledge and empathy that can help them to be global citizens who care about DON’T BECOME PREOCCUPIED WITH

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Cont’d

As we come to the end of this term and look back on all that we have accomplished together as a school community, I believe there has been much to celebrate. Next term promises to be equally fulfilling! I trust that the upcoming holiday break allows our students and their parents some extra time to rest, spend time with family and friends, reconnect with nature and to enjoy the occasional pyjama day! Mrs McCue returns after the holidays and I will be on Leave for the first two weeks of next term. STAFF NEWS Miss Jenna O’Donnell has accepted a position at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Primary School, Austral from next year. St Anthony’s is a brand new school opening in 2017 and Jenna will be teaching the very first cohort of students at the school. Whilst we will miss Jenna, we are very excited for the wonderful career opportunity this is for her. TERM 4 Students return to school on Monday, October 10 in summer uniform. Friday Assemblies As the weather is warming up we will return to whole school Friday morning Assemblies under the COLA commencing Week 1, Term 4. Library Monitors A number of Year 6 students have demonstrated wonderful leadership skills by offering their assistance in the Library during lunch times. These students re-shelve books, tidy up, replenish supplies, deliver resources to classes and assist wherever needed. Their commitment is an invaluable help to Mrs Cripps and the staff.

Joel Weegen, Joshua Roy, Jack Donati, Luka Cavdarovski and Rhovic Legaspi.

WRITING COMPETITION A number of our students recently took up the opportunity to submit a story for WriteOn, an annual writing competition for NSW students in Years 1 to 6. The quality of all the stories was of a high standard but unfortunately we were only allowed to submit one entry from each Stage on behalf of the school. We congratulate Cristina Yazbeck (Stage 3), Trevor Barton (Stage 2) and Emily Zafiropoulos whose entries were selected for entry by the school Leadership Team. Unfortunately, none of these entries were awarded a prize in the competition but we encourage all our budding authors to keep writing and developing their skills. Thank you all for submitting your stories. Swimming The swimming program for Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 begins on Wednesday of Week 1 next term. Please see Miss O’Donnell’s notice in today’s newsletter for details. Asphalting An area of the playground will be re asphalted during the holidays (weather permitting) making the surface more even and safer. CASPA AUDITIONS 2017 Auditions for CaSPA 2017 are beginning soon. If your child is in Years 4-5 and has an exceptional talent in either Singing / Dancing or Acting, they are welcome to apply. Of course you will need to commit to the rehearsal and performance program as outlined in the schedule. Please cut and paste this shortcut (https://goo.gl/rdvKfM) into a new web browser to find out more information and apply. Registrations open for Primary School students on Monday 24 October.

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FROM THE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CO-ORDINATOR

I am sure the students missed their teachers on Friday but despite this I hope all families had an enjoyable weekend.

The teachers took some important time out to nurture their own faith formation at the Mount Carmel Retreat Centre in Varroville. As teachers in a Catholic school we have a responsibility and a desire to nurture our personal relationship with Jesus. It is only in nourishing our own faith that we can be authentic witnesses to Christ in our school community and society generally.

Our Retreat experience began on Thursday evening and concluded on Friday afternoon. During our time together we participated in meaningful experiences of individual and communal prayer, we connected with Sacred Scripture and we were blessed to have Father John celebrate Mass for us. We enjoyed some precious alone time and time spent appreciating each other’s company, all in picturesque, comfortable surroundings.

I think we all appreciated the time taken to engage our “head” and “heart” in learning more about the core beliefs of our faith, much of it beautifully presented through the wisdom of Pope Francis, and spending time with Scripture and in prayer.

“Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” Matthew 5:7

St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School “Inspiring Hearts, Opening Minds” FIRST CONFESSION AT ST JOSEPH’S PARISH RIVERWOOD

A reminder that the Parent Information Meeting and enrolment for First Confession for students in Year 2 and above is taking place on Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm in the Parish Centre, adjacent to the Presbytery.

Please bring along:   your child’s baptismal certificate,  a recent school photo, clearly labelled with their name on the back and  $20 to cover the cost of the First Confession Workbook the children will need for the Sunday School classes and other administration costs.

If your child has not brought home an enrolment form, it can be completed at the meeting.

Crazy Sock Day A very big thank you for your generous support of Crazy Sock Day. The students and teachers certainly entered into the spirit of the day and we raised a grand total of $527.

This money will go towards purchasing men’s socks and Christmas cards for the many people the Gethsemane Community support who experience great disadvantage and do not have friends or family to care for them at Christmas.

Peace and best wishes for a relaxing time with family and friends over the holidays.
