A Message from the Principal

Recently I was reading an article about how you can take control and make the most of every day. The article has 10 points, which I share with you below. I would add one extra point that I believe is even more important than all of the others - PRAYER. Spend some time each day in prayer. Maybe you could be thanking our Lord for all you have, you could be asking for assistance or just appreciating our beautiful world. Following are the ten points from the article: 1. Sleep well. You can’t conquer the day if you’re suffering from sleep deprivation. It all begins with a good night’s sleep. Make it a habit to get 7-8 hours whenever possible. 2. Eat well. We’ve all heard the saying, ‘you are what you eat’. Consuming good quality nutritional food does wonders to a person’s energy levels. Replace that 3.30pm chocolate bar with something that’s better for you. Your brain and body will thank you for it. 3. Get fit You don’t have to do 100 burpees a day or train for a marathon to reap the benefits of being fit. Exercise is a great de-stressor, boosts energy, and improves the mood. Take the dog for a (brisk!) walk, join a beginner’s salsa class, or go for a morning dip. Whatever it is, make it fun and work it into your routine. 4. Be an early riser This shouldn’t be a problem if you’re already completing step 1. Plan for a good night’s rest and wake up early to an entire day of opportunities ahead of you. 5. Find your purpose What’s your purpose? Is it to help educate and develop the younger generation? Is it to provide support to those around you? Find your purpose and work towards that each day. 6. Set daily goals Set yourself realistic and achievable mini goals each day and do the hardest one first. Don’t give into procrastination. As you tick off each goal on your list, you can be proud of what you have achieved. 7. Plan ahead It’s easy for days, weeks, and even months to pass by without achieving much, if you never had a plan in the first place. If you set your goals in advance, you create a very clear and visual picture of what your next day, week, or month will look like and what you need to achieve. 8. Be positive Are you are glass half-full or half-empty person? Being a negative person not only affects your own mood, it can also become toxic to those around you. Choose to be a positive person – you’ll be amazed at what you achieve just by changing your attitude. 9. Declutter Clear your desk, your work space, your living space, and your mind. Having excess clutter restricts your ability to focus and causes stress. It may be time for a spring clean! 10. Take a break Not every single day has to be one in which you tick 10 tasks off your to-do list. An important part of making the most of every day is also rejuvenating and listening to your mind and body if it needs a break. Allow yourself ‘me-time’, take a day off, or go on a well-deserved holiday.

A Message from the Principal Continued Before and After School Care During our enrolment period I am often asked if we have before and after school care here on our school premises. Currently the answer is no, but because of the number of enquiries we have decided to investigate if we should put it in place at OLMC. To assist I have been looking at what companies other local Catholic Primary Schools use and have narrowed this down to a short list of possible providers. Before we go any further I would like to find out if you, the parents, would use before and after school care, if it was provided at our school. Today, every family who has given us their email address, will receive a short survey with the following questions. If you do not have an email address and wish to respond please feel free to send your responses to the school office. Do you currently use a before school service? Do you currently use an after school service? If OLMC provided Before and After School Care would you consider using it? If yes, for how many afternoons? If yes, for how many mornings? Once we have a response I will inform our community if we are going to explore the option further.

MARTIAL ARTS I have recently been approached by a local Martial Arts School, asking to run an after school Martial Arts class on the school premises for our students. I am also aware that a number of families from our school may be interested in providing the same service. If you are interested please send an expression of interest to the school office before Monday 26 June.

LOST PROPERTY Due to the colder weather we have quite a few jackets in lost property. If your child has lost a jacket or hat please come to the school office and check the lost property. Please note that at the end of each Term any unclaimed lost property is donated to the St Vincent De Paul Society. Please label all student property so that if found it can be returned to the rightful owner.

Change of SLAM Days - Year 3 and Year 5

This week, Year 3 and Year 5 will be changing their SLAM Days. Year 5 will have their SLAM Day on Wednesday 14 June and Year 3 will participate in SLAM Day on Thursday, 15 June. All students are required to wear their sports uniform on SLAM Day.

Year 6 Religious Education Test:

Our Year 6 students will sit the Archdiocesan Religious Education Test on Wednesday 14 June. The test consists of 50 multiple-choice questions and will cover the Religious Education Curriculum from Years 3-6 and Mass responses from the new translation of the Roman Missal. We wish our Year 6 Students all the best for the 2017 RE Test.

Parent-Teacher Interviews: Just a reminder that Parent-Teacher Interviews are being held in the last week of this term. ParentTeacher Interviews provide you with the opportunity to communicate with your child’s teacher and hear how your child is progressing academically and socially. Have you booked an appointment time to meet with your child’s class teacher yet? The online booking system opened last Wednesday. All appointments need to be made by Friday, 23 June. If you are unable to complete the online booking process at home, please visit the School Office from 9.15am – 2.45pm where the Office ladies will be able to assist you with booking a time on the computer.

Resolving Playground Issues:

In the school's daily and routine life, the ways in which people interact with each other significantly affects each person's sense of self worth, belonging and wellbeing. The fostering of high quality interpersonal relationships between staff, students, parents and their families is a responsibility shared by everyone. With this in mind, we aim to develop relationships based on trust, cooperation and partnership between the school, parish and family members. Should your child or grandchild experience an issue involving other students on the playground, we ask our parents, carers and grandparents not to step in and try to diffuse the situation. This often only results in the situation becoming bigger and more complex. At OLMC, as part of the Child Protection Policy, no parent, carer or grandparent is permitted to approach, intimidate through word or gesture or make physical contact with another parent’s child on the school grounds. This behaviour will not be tolerated and persons demonstrating such behaviour will be contacted and required to meet with Mr Loy or myself.

Similarly we discourage parents from confronting other parents on the playground regarding issues between students. Should your child be experiencing a social issue in the classroom or on the playground, please inform your child’s class teacher. Your child’s teacher will work with your child and other students identified as being part of the raised matter in an effort to resolve the issue. In the event that the situation continues after the class teacher has had the opportunity to deal with the matter, please do not hesitate to contact the office to make an appointment to speak to Mr Loy or myself.

Winter Holiday Reading Challenge

All students will receive a Winter Holiday Reading Challenge Bookmark to encourage them to read during the break. When students read regularly their reading skills are maintained and I would strongly encourage every student to participate. Students will be required to record the names of books they have read and parents/carers need to sign the bookmark. This bookmark is to be returned in the first week of Term 3. There will be prizes for each grade that will be awarded at the Term 3, Week 2 assembly. Keep Reading OLMC! Early Bird Reading It is wonderful to see so many students and their families attend Early Bird Reading. The winning class will be announced at the Week 9 assembly. They will receive a pizza party for their efforts. Keep coming to read OLMC! OLMC Bookclub for Adults

Thank you to the parents/ carers who have returned their expression of interest to participate note. If you enjoy reading and would like to be a part of this group that will meet fortnightly on Friday’s from 1.40pm - 2.20pm please return the note. A letter regarding which book we will begin reading will be sent home before the holidays. Research shows that when children see their parents as readers, it encourages them to read. VIETNAMESE LIAISON Recently we appointed Helen Huynh to work in the school office three days per week and to take on the role of Vietnamese liaison for our school. Helen comes to us with a wealth of experience working across a number of schools over the last ten years. Helen will perform a number of roles within the office and she will also be available for interpreting during interviews for those families whose main language is Vietnamese and may struggle with English. To assist our Vietnamese families Helen is also offering to run a number of programs in Vietnamese which would complement workshops we offer for the whole school community. To assist us in our planning in how we can best meet the need of our students and parents we would appreciate your ideas and suggestions.
