Ross Local Schools

Serving Our Community for 85 Years

Summer 2016

Superintendent’s Message The 2015 – 2016 school year has concluded and by any measure can be considered to have been a very successful one for the Ross Local School District. I want to thank each of our students for working to his or her potential. The result was a high level of academic achievement in every building. I want to thank our staff members who worked diligently to serve our students and to improve instructional practices through staff development activities. I also want to thank our parents and community members for their unwavering support of our schools. It takes everyone working together to achieve a highly rated school district. The end of this school year also marks the end of my career with the Ross Local School District. I will be retiring as your superintendent of schools effective July 31, 2016. It has been my privilege and joy to serve as an administrator in the district over the past 28 years. The Ross School District has accomplished much during that time and I thank all of those staff members, parents, and community members who have worked to make the district number one in Butler County.

Mr. Scott Gates

New Superintendent of Schools Hired Board of Education Message The members of the Ross Board of Education would like to extend their appreciation and thanks to Mr. Greg Young upon his retirement. Beginning with his service as assistant high school principal in 1988, through his time as high school principal, assistant superintendent, and superintendent, Mr. Young has been a true leader, dedicated to excellence and to the success of the students in the Ross Local School District. His hard work and diligence will be missed. Congratulations on your retirement! “Kids Are Our Business”

The Ross Board of Education unanimously hired Mr. Scott Gates as the new Ross Superintendent of Schools. He will officially begin his duties on August 1, 2016. Mr. Gates comes to Ross from the Finneytown School District where he has served as the Director of Student Services for the past three years. Prior to that position he was an elementary principal in the Forest Hills and Little Miami School Districts for fourteen years. He also served as Deputy Superintendent of the Warren County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Mr. Gates earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Bowling Green State University and a Masters of Educational Administration from the University of Dayton.

ROSS REFLECTIONS

Ross High School Receives All “A” Award

Elementary Attendance Boundary Adjusted

The Ohio State Board of Education has recognized Ross High School with one of its first annual All “A” Awards. The All “A” Award is given to schools that received a grade of A on every aspect of school performance measured on Ohio’s School Report Cards. RHS was the only high school in Butler County and one of only 44 schools statewide that qualified for the All “A” Award.

The attendance boundary between Elda Elementary School and Morgan Elementary School has been modified effective with the beginning of the 2016 – 2017 school year. The change was necessary due to overcrowded conditions at Elda and the fact that there were several empty rooms at Morgan. Approximately 110 students will be moving from Elda Elementary to Morgan Elementary this Fall. This change will also help balance the enrollment between the two buildings.

This recognition follows the announcement last fall by U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan that Ross High School was one of 335 schools nationwide and 14 in Ohio to earn the National Blue Ribbon Award for 2015. RHS was recognized as an Exemplary High Performing School and received education’s most prestigious award in a ceremony in Washington, D.C. Ross High School was also one of five Butler County High Schools to be named to U.S. News and World Report’s 2016 Best High Schools List. This report reviewed more than 21,000 high schools nationwide and awarded a silver medal to RHS for being ranked in the top 5%.

Food Service Update In recent years the district has implemented a school breakfast program at Elda and Morgan Elementary Schools to comply with federal law. Ross Middle School also qualifies for the breakfast program, but the district has chosen to opt out of the program at that building for financial reasons. Federal law also requires us to notify parents of the closest school that you can obtain a free lunch for your children during the summer. That location is Mt. Healthy High School. If you have any questions regarding this information, please contact Debbie Christophel, the Ross Director of Food Services.

Softball Team Goes to State The RHS softball program known as “Ramball” had an outstanding season. The team finished as SWOC Champions, District Champions, and Regional Champions. The Regional Championship victory earned the team a trip to the State Final Four. The district is proud of the team’s accomplishment. Seniors on the team were Annie Hinterlong, Ashley Parrett, Layne Shields, Elisha Toney, and Kelsey Warman.

Morgan Elementary Performs Well On the 2015 Ohio School Report Card Morgan Elementary School had the highest Performance Index of any elementary school in Butler County. This achievement marks five consecutive years that Morgan has been the highest achieving elementary school in the county. In addition, this past school year every teacher at Morgan earned the highest state rating of “Most Effective” for their individual student growth measure.
