STUDENT​ ​RELOCATION Background District​ ​students​ ​generally​ ​attend​ ​their​ ​designated​ ​home​ ​school,​ ​the​ ​school​ ​that​ ​services​ ​the neighbourhood​ ​in​ ​which​ ​the​ ​parent/legal​ ​guardian​ ​resides.​ ​In​ ​addition,​ ​the​ ​district​ ​uses boundaries​ ​strategically​ ​to​ ​ensure​ ​optimal​ ​student​ ​populations​ ​that​ ​support​ ​viable​ ​programming across​ ​district​ ​schools. Definition Relocation​​ ​refers​ ​to​ ​student​ ​transfer​ ​where​ ​the​ ​move​ ​to​ ​another​ ​school​ ​is​ ​a​ ​choice.​ ​This​ ​may​ ​be a​ ​function​ ​of​ ​student,​ ​parent/legal​ ​guardian​ ​or​ ​school​ ​recommendation.​ ​Relocation​ ​is​ ​only undertaken​ ​when​ ​parents/legal​ ​guardians​ ​are​ ​in​ ​full​ ​agreement​ ​with​ ​the​ ​relocation​ ​of​ ​the student. Student​ ​relocation​ ​example: Reason​ ​for​ ​Relocation Student,​ ​parent/legal​ ​guardian or​ ​school​ ​feels​ ​that​ ​a​ ​student needs​ ​a​ ​fresh​ ​start​ ​and​ ​would do​ ​better​ ​in​ ​a​ ​new​ ​setting.

Stakeholders Decision​ ​Rests​ ​With Students,​ ​parent/legal​ ​guardian, Receiving​ ​school​ ​principal* Home​ ​school​ ​principal, District​ ​personnel,​ ​if​ ​applicable Receiving​ ​school​ ​principal,​ ​area supervisor,​ ​diverse​ ​learning (Consultation) *Home​ ​school​ ​principal​ ​completes​ ​relocation​ ​report

Procedures: 1. In​ ​the​ ​event​ ​that​ ​the​ ​need​ ​for​ ​relocation​ ​arises,​ ​all​ ​of​ ​the​ ​stakeholders​ ​discuss​ ​the​ ​relative merits​ ​of​ ​such​ ​a​ ​move.​ ​Should​ ​all​ ​the​ ​stakeholders​ ​agree​ ​that​ ​relocation​ ​would​ ​be​ ​in​ ​the​ ​best interest​ ​of​ ​the​ ​student;​ ​the​ ​home​ ​school​ ​principal​ ​will​ ​contact​ ​another​ ​school,​ ​and​ ​in consultation​ ​with​ ​the​ ​area​ ​supervisor,​ ​diverse​ ​learning,​ ​arrange​ ​for​ ​a​ ​transfer​ ​with​ ​the principal​ ​of​ ​the​ ​receiving​ ​school.​ ​The​ ​area​ ​superintendent​ ​is​ ​then​ ​provided​ ​with​ ​an​ ​update. 2. A​ ​transition​ ​meeting​ ​is​ ​arranged​ ​involving​ ​staff​ ​from​ ​both​ ​schools,​ ​the​ ​parents/legal guardians,​ ​the​ ​student​ ​and​ ​any​ ​other​ ​appropriate​ ​support​ ​personnel.​ ​A​ ​success​ ​plan​ ​for​ ​the student​ ​will​ ​be​ ​discussed​ ​and​ ​developed​ ​at​ ​the​ ​meeting.​ ​A​ ​follow-up​ ​letter​ ​is​ ​then​ ​sent​ ​to​ ​the parents/legal​ ​guardians​ ​from​ ​the​ ​home​ ​school​ ​principal. 3. The​ ​home​ ​school​ ​principal​ ​will​ ​complete​ ​the​ ​Relocation​ ​Report​ ​(Form​ ​357-1)​ ​and​ ​send copies​ ​to​ ​the​ ​appropriate​ ​area​ ​superintendent,​ ​and​ ​area​ ​supervisor,​ ​diverse​ ​learning.
