RAFT Simple Stethoscope STEM Relationships: Listening to the heart is a practical way to teach students about how the heart pumps blood through the circulatory system. The sounds of the beats provide information on heart valves, heart rate, and they reveal the relationship between circulation and respiration. This simple device allows students to appreciate the importance of the stethoscope in medicine and the study of human biology. Science    

Identify patterns in heart beats before and after vigorous exercise. Examine properties of materials used to create vibrations heard through the stethoscope. Identify different parts of a heart and draw a picture of the heart with labels. Plan and conduct an experiment to identify the relationship between heart rate and breathing.

Correlate these findings to different materials used to make stethoscopes. Create a graph of heart rate vs. time for two conditions: before and after exercise Measure and compare heart rate vs. time and breathing rate vs. time. Derive a math function relating all these quantities Listen to your heart beat and try to identify the opening and closing of heart valves based on the “lub dub” pattern Identify the relationship between the surface area of the stethoscope membrane and the volume/clarity of the sound heard. Use math symbols to write a conceptual model of the relationship to present to peers.
