From the Pastor’s Desk
Training for Discipleship In our household, we have been really into the Olympics. We have been watching the swimming—watching Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, among others get gold medal after gold medal. We have seen the gymnastics and the beach volleyball. I even watched some ping pong (which is pretty amazing) as well as the men’s and women’s road race for bicycling (both of which had fantastic finishes and terrible-looking crashes). As we watch these world class athletes compete for their dreams, NBC will occasionally run a piece about the training regimen of the athletes and how hard they train in order to be in the position of competing in the Olympics. When I hear about the routines that many of these athletes go through in order to stay in shape and hone their skills for their events, I am always amazed at the amount of time it takes and how it consumes their lives. This always reminds me as to why my golf game is still not great. I want to be able to go out and play a couple of times a year and play like Tiger Woods (in his heyday). This just doesn’t happen. In order to be great at something, it takes time and practice and practice and practice. This is also true in our Christian walk. If we desire to be like Jesus—this doesn’t happen overnight. If we want to bring honor and glory to God in all that we do and say—this takes work! In our confession, we state ‘we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone.’ (LBW, p. 56) This reminds us that our natural state is sinfulness and thus in order to be holy and pure, it takes WORK! We cannot by our own effort become sinless—however I think the Biblical witness calls us to strive toward this goal. Jesus tells the women caught in adultery to go and sin no more. (John 8) So how do we train for discipleship? How do we train ourselves to be like Jesus? It involves practice and a routine. The training is not lifting weights or aerobic exercise or dieting. Rather the training involves regular Bible reading, daily prayer, weekly worship, serving others who are in need, giving of our time and talents, and sharing our faith with others. Just as Olympic athletes need to continually train in order to achieve their goals of medaling, so we need to regularly and consistently seek to train ourselves in faith practices to strength our daily walk with Jesus.

Text— Luke 14:25-33
The charge to hate everyone and even life itself stands next to the call to love one another (Luke 10:27), and despite this command to give up all our possessions, in the Acts of the Apostles, Luke lauds wealthy Christians for their support of the community. Here Luke’s repeated theme, that God forgives, is shown to have a cost. If there was no cost, if forgiveness is totally free, why did Jesus have to die? When we come forward for holy communion, we are indeed following Jesus and his cross.

Text— Luke 15:1-10
The grumbling of the Pharisees and the scribes in today’s gospel is actually our holy hope: This Jesus welcomes sinners and eats with them. That our God wills to seek and to save the lost is not only a holy hope, it is our only hope. As Paul’s first letter to Timothy reminds us, “The saying is sure and worthy of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.” Thanks be to God.

Today we celebrate the Mission Festival. Our focus this year will be Turning Point. We will hear stories of how this organization helps and assists people in our community. The Gospel Message calls us to live out our faith. One way that we do this is through various organizations and ministries that do work that we couldn’t do by ourselves as a congregation, but can participate in through supporting with our time, with supplies that they need, and financially.

This excerpt from 1 Timothy is remarkably appropriate for this Sunday. In Christ believers discover the true treasury. They are to be rich in good works. The good fight of faith is described as marked by love, endurance, and gentleness, yet also pursues righteousness and generosity. Rather than loving money, Christians are to be ready to share.

Tyler, Carolyn and Pastor Steve have met and talked about what direction we should take with revamping TREATS. At this point in time, we are looking at offering a new event that will be offered on Sunday. The program will have a Day Camp feel to it, with a focus upon a Bible lesson, crafts, and games. This program will be geared toward elementary age youth. At this point, we are thinking of incorporating a meal as part of this new program. This event will have a new name (which hasn’t been thought yet).
St. John's Lutheran Church, White Creek Annual Smorgasbord/Bazaar Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 4:30-7:00 p.m. The menu will include turkey and ham, homemade noodles, mashed potatoes, corn, green beans, and assorted salads and desserts.
We are targeting January for the beginning of this new program, with the thought of it being once a month and trying it from January to April. As of right now, we are thinking of a time frame of 4:30 to 6:30 or so.

RESULTS FROM VEHICLE SURVEY These results were presented at the August Council meeting. Of the forty-four surveys returned, 34 were in favor of further exploration toward purchase of a vehicle for church use and 10 were opposed to the idea. Many folks stated they would like to have more information about the possibility of purchasing a vehicle. On the Welcome Center is an information sheet about the type of vehicle being researched, the options available, and the cost. An informational forum is being planned for October 9 at 9:15 a.m. Jim Lloyd, a representative of Church Bus, Inc., will bring a church bus to St. Paul so members can experience what an actual vehicle would provide riders. Mr. Lloyd will be present to answer any questions. 7

Borchers Breakfast Club
Faith Through The Years
Borchers Breakfast Club (BBC) meets every Thursday from 9:00 to 12:00 for breakfast, activities, and social time. YOU are welcome to join the group just for breakfast, or for the entire morning.
Many seniors at St. Paul-Borchers have shared their favorite bible verses. A series of brief narratives about how particular verses have influenced the lives of these members have also been published in newsletters. These “faith stories” are shared with the hope of passing on inspirational thoughts that might inspire others to persevere in their own Christian walks. This month’s faith story was written after an interview with Eunice Lutes.
Leftovers from weekly BBC breakfasts are available to be delivered to anyone who would appreciate this effort. If you or someone you know might like an occasional delivery, please let Joe Hoene or Trish Tangman know.
On an extremely cold night in January of 1936, Eunice Winona Otte was born at the home of her parents, Harold and Lona Hehman Otte. Although the outside temperature was a frigid fourteen degrees below zero, the local doctor arrived on horseback. The doctor was able to find a suitably warm spot behind a wood-burning stove where Eunice was delivered into the world. Eunice’s parents payed the doctor for this unique delivery with an equally unique payment - a big pot of chicken and dumplings!
Trip to Franklin, Indiana
Eunice was the second oldest child born to Harold and Lona. She grew up with five brothers – Gerald Otte, Alvin Otte, Merrill Otte, Harlan Otte, and Dennis Otte, and one sister, Marlis Otte Kidd. Confirmation for Eunice took place in 1950 in a class of five girls and two boys instructed by Pastor George Sixt. In 1955 Eunice married the love of her life, Thurman Lutes. The couple was married over 50 years and raised three children – Timothy, Kitturah, and Michelle. Eunice considers marrying Thurman and raising their children to be the greatest accomplishment of her life.
September 22 This outing will include a complimentary lunch at a shelter in Franklin’s Province Park, and a free showing of the award-winning movie “Hoosiers” at the downtown Artcraft Theatre. As always, you don’t have to be a senior citizen to attend with the group!
Eunice’s faith life has remained an important anchor for her throughout her life. Reading the 23rd Psalm is a comfort to her, as it reminds her she is cared for by God in good times as well as difficult times. Asked what she would like her children and grandchildren to remember about her she said, “Please remember my love for you and my faithfulness towards God. Stay strong in your faith and be faithful to your family.” Eunice hopes she will be remembered by others for her kindness, helpfulness, and love.

HEALTH & WELLNESS CARE: by Susie Schnitker, Certified Family Nurse Practitioner With all the recent rains, mosquitos are anticipated to be quite a problem as we head in to fall. Mosquitos breed in standing water so when excess water is present, mosquito populations tend to increase. Mosquitos are a vector that are known to carry many serious diseases caused by bacteria, viruses, and parasites. Some of the more common diseases in the US include: West Nile Virus, several viruses and bacteria responsible for causing meningitis and encephalitis and now a new disease called Zika Fever.
Monday, September 26 6:30 p.m. Dinner & Updates will take place for all Stephen Ministers and guests at 6:30 PM on Monday, September 26th. The meal will be catered by Farmhouse Catering. Please let Trish know of your availability to attend! Stephen Ministers with official care receivers are attending monthly supervision meetings with Trish for the duration of each relationship. Brief refresher meetings are encouraged as needed, for Stephen Ministers beginning new caregiving relationships. ALL Stephen Ministers will meet twice yearly, for dinner and updates, on the 4th Mondays of March and September.

How to Protect Against Mosquito Bites
Zika virus is spread to people mainly through the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes that spread Zika virus both mostly during the day, but they can also bite at night. The best way to prevent Zika is to protect yourself from mosquito bites.

St. Paul’s Youth and Family Ministries LUTHER LEAGUE Luther League will meet on Sunday, September 18 at 5:30 at El Nopal for our kick-off meeting. We will be planning the upcoming yearly events. Anyone in grades 912 are invited to join us. Just bring money for your supper! After the meeting there will be a schedule of the yearly activities posted on the YFM bulletin board in the office , as well as extra copies to take home.
JR. HIGH Those Jr. High Youth who registered to attend the annual IYI Youth Retreat at Lutheran Hills on September 23 -25 will meet at the church on Friday, September 23 at 6:00 p.m. We should return to the church around 11:15 a.m. on Sunday, September 25. Be sure to pack appropriate clothing for the weekend. There are copies of what you need to bring in the folder on the YFM bulletin board in the church office. After our meeting last month, there is a schedule of the yearly events posted on the YFM bulletin board as well as extra copies to take home.
TWEENERS Tweeners is a group for Grades 3-5. We will meet on Sunday, September 18 for lunch (pizza) and a movie.
