SAMPLE ▸ We all would love a chance to correct a mistake, a chance to gain back something precious that was lost. People have been paralyzed by their seeming missteps, so they try and recreate themselves. Although very different in some ways, two films, The Great Gatsby and The Wizard of Oz both explore this idea of reinvention. In The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, a war veteran comes back as a mysterious millionaire in order to win back a previous lover. In Victor Fleming’s The Wizard of Oz a girl tries to regain her family that was seemingly taken from her by an evil witch. Both Jay Gatsby and Dorothy create fantastic worlds in order to reinvent themselves, to get back what was lost. However, both of them find that these fantastic world cannot be maintained and they collapse. Both The Great Gatsby and The Wizard of Oz suggest that we have a need to escape reality in order to discover something profound about ourselves but ultimately, reinvention is impossible.
