Disaster relief: How to help

There are two new developments that will affect your unit!

The summer of 2017 has brought some of the worst weather in recent memory. Thousands of Scouting units have been or will be affected. As a result, the National Service Center and local council offices have been receiving questions about how the Scouting family can help those in need. Help a Scouting Unit: Other councils/packs/troops looking to support affected Scouting units in Texas, Louisiana, and Florida can purchase new items so they can resume activities as soon as possible. To help units in Texas/Louisiana:

YOUTH PROTECTION Effective September 1, 2017, all new leader applications and disclosure forms being turned in must include a copy of their Youth Protection Training certificate. If a copy of their Youth Protection Training certificate is not included, their application cannot be accepted. There will no longer be a 30 day grace period for taking Youth Protection Training. All currently registered leaders or previously registered leaders that are turning in applications and disclosure forms for new positions must be current in Youth Protection Training as well. Each unit’s Key 3 has access to a Youth Protection Training aging report through www.my.scouting.org by going to the Training Manager page. This report will give you the information that is needed to keep your unit leadership up-to-date with Youth Protection Training. It is important that all unit leadership have current Youth Protection Training at the time of recharter, or there will be a delay in processing.

Help a Local Council: Donors can give to a special BSA fund established to help those councils most affected by the flooding. Donations can be designated for specific councils or shared among all affected councils. All donations will be used to help rebuild and restore BSA facilities and programs. REGISTRATION FEES Effective December 1, 2017, the annual membership fee for both youth and adult membership fees will increase to $33 per year. This increase is due to the number and the size of claims made against the General Liability Insurance Plan (GLIP). As a movement we are self-insured, so every time there is a claim or litigation the GLIP takes a hit. The timing of this is not good due to many Cub Scout packs just starting the process of recruiting new members, and many units completed their budgeting and planning over the summer. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but continuing to protect our charter partners, Scouts, leaders, parents, and staff has to be done. Events & Catering and Fun Services, has been appointed as the 2018 Friends of Scouting Council Chairman. Jeff is an Eagle Scout, graduate of Leadership Akron, and a Silver Beaver recipient. Jeff is a community leader in Northeast Ohio and brings a wealth of experience and passion to everything he does. 1

Get your Webelos II ready to join a troop

BSA’s IDG team along with many volunteer beta testers are excited to announce a new look, with added features, to the myScouting Mobile App available now for both iPhone (iOS 9.0 or greater) and Android (4.4 or greater) devices! The new app allows you the ability to access your training resources and take courses including YPT; track training completions; download or send by email your completed training certificate; communicate with members within your organization level and below (for Key 3s and those having that access); manage your profile; manage announcements and calendar events for your organization; and, importantly access many of your Commissioner Tools. (Accessible by clicking the Commissioner wreath at the bottom right hand corner on the home screen.) Under Settings the new app also supports both English and Spanish, has a night-mode feature and allows the user to turn tutorials on or off. The focus of Commissioner Tools is primarily for unit commissioners to make it easier to access their assigned units. This has the added benefits of increased speed, efficiency and agility of the app. Consequently, commissioners are limited to the units they are assigned. The incentive is to ensure one or more commissioners are assigned to every unit. Commissioner Tools functions supported include: • Commissioner and unit assignments; • Entering and completing contacts for Simple Assessments; • Creating and managing roundtables. Completed contacts and roundtable entries will be synchronized between the web and mobile platforms. However, the ability to delete or enter a future assessment or roundtable is not available with this release. Additional Commissioner Tools functionality not currently supported on mobile devices include:

The Webelos-to-Scout Transition program is designed to improve the chances that a second year Webelos Scout will become a Boy Scout. It has been successful in almost doubling the percentage of Webelos who join a troop. The program will improve the chances that an unsure 10 year-old will find the courage to give it a try. The heart of the program is cooperation between a troop and a pack to schedule joint activities so that the second year Webelos will get to know the Scouts and feel at home with normal troop activities. The joint activities should not shove the Webelos Scout into full-fledged Scouting. Just the fringes. This takes careful cooperation between the Webelos leader and an assistant Scoutmaster assigned to this purpose. A commissioner can often ease this process. It is suggested that the second year Webelos den can participate in the troop opening and then retire to another room for their own program. Then they can come together for the closing. On campouts there can be similar partial togetherness. This can continue for most of the program year.

Volunteers benefit from Scouting Although the primary reason to get involved in Scouting is our desire to share our skills and values with young people, keep in mind that new volunteers—parents and families—also benefit by gaining skills through training and Scouting activities that help them become better parents, managers, employees, and citizens in their community. Volunteers show their commitment to improving themselves and the Scouting program by giving an average of 20 hours of their time each month. They say volunteering for Scouting helps them develop in several ways. The following results were published in the Volunteer Outcomes Study. Community service and citizenship: ♦ Helps them be better citizens (90%) ♦ Increases participation in service activities (73%) ♦ Volunteer for other youth organizations (66%) Enjoyment and self-esteem: ♦ Adds more fun to their lives (85%) Relationship skills: ♦ Helps them be a better parent (88%) ♦ Builds friendships with other adults (73%) ♦ Helps them relate to young people (70%) ♦ Helps them be more patient with people (69%)

BALOO Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation This training is for leaders and parents in the Cub pack who plan the pack’s camping and outdoor programs. This course teaches the basics of Cub Scout camping through hands on experiences. Each pack must have a BALOO trained person in order to go camping. 2018 GTC Philmont Contingent The council announces the 2018 high adventure trip to Philmont! The council has secured 3 crews of 12 per crew to travel to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico from June 16-June 29, 2018. The budgeted cost of this trip is $1,900 and includes all travel, touring, all meals, 2 custom sweatwicking t-shirts, GTC Philmont hat, all Philmont fees and transportation in New Mexico! This is a highly popular, once in a lifetime trip, and participants will be assigned, first come (with deposit), first served! The $400 deposit is due with the registration form. Youth must be at least 14 by January 1, 2018 or must complete the 8th grade in June, 2018 to be eligible to go. Lights, Camera, Action! Boy Scouts & Venturing video contest Lights, Camera, Action! Is a Great Trail Council video contest for Boy Scouts and Venturers to show what Scouting/ Venturing means to them. All you need to do is record a short 1-3 minute video showing you and your fellow Scouts/ Venturers participating in fun activities. All videos need to be reviewed by troop/crew leaders to ensure that they meet the contest requirements, however a troop/crew can submit as many videos as they like. Videos will be judged on their ability to educate, engage, and entertain while telling a story about how the activity showcases Scouting/Venturing. The contest will run in two segments, the first segment ends September 31 and the second segment runs October 1-December 31. The troop/ crew with the best video in each contest segment will receive a $100 GTC gift card that can be used at either the Scout Shop in Akron or the Scout Shop at Camp Stambaugh. All Scouts/Venturers who participate in creating and submitting a video will have their names entered into a drawing for a GoPro Camera! Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) at Camp Stambaugh is October 21 Scouts who are interested in earning their “Radio” merit badge can learn about ham radio and should attend Jamboree on the Air (JOTA) at Camp Stambaugh’s Brown Pavilion on October 21. The Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Association will have antennas in the air and radios working by 9 a.m., and will have a special call sign for this event. November 18—Boys Leading Boys—A course for youth leaders AND their Scoutmasters on how to deal with behaviors and use the precepts of Universal Scouting to help their troop succeed. The Special Needs Advisory Committee (SNAC) is looking for some really awesome Scouters. Perhaps you’ve been programming with a pack for a number of years, and now you’re tired. Come, re-invigorate with us as we come up with innovative ways to make Scouting possible for all of our Scouts. Do you know of an issue in Great Trail Council regarding the extraordinary needs of a Scout that wasn’t addressed quite the right way? As of this writing, we can only guess that most of the School Nights were a huge success. As with any campaign, there is always a certain amount of followup that needs to be accomplished. First, it is the obligation of every unit to promote training as the primary source of information for all of its new leaders. We find that many units don’t promote training to all of their leaders because they hate to impose upon their free-time. All the best units in the council, the units that consistently out-perform all others, believe in training for all leaders. Second, we are a membership organization, and in order to receive the benefits of this organization one must be registered. No rights or obligations are to be extended to any individual not duly registered within the guideline set by the National Council, Boys Scout of America. Third, proper procedures as to the guidelines for new adults must be followed. All adults must be approved by the chartered head of the organization. The chartered head should approve applications based on the reference checks and recommendations provided by the committee of the unit. Lastly, boys should be meeting with their dens. There should be no waiting lists. If you have the names of boys you cannot place, don’t place them on a list that you will not actively pursue. Please notify your district executive so that we can follow up on the names to get them into Scouting.

Plan now for Universal Scouting Training During the University of Scouting, on March 3, 2018, please plan to earn our trained patch and show your fellow Scouters that you’re interested in serving all of our Scouts. We’ll have 18 courses to choose from. 18! If you have questions about boards of review for a special needs Scout, bring them to the University of Scouting. Top 10 reasons to have Tiger Cubs

The Commissioners’ Corner is presented by the district commissioners of the Great Trail Council. Its purpose is to inform unit leaders about the role that unit commissioners play in delivering service to the units. College of Commisioner Science It’s not too early to begin thinking about attending this year’s College of Commissioner Science on Saturday, November 11, at the Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 E. Main St., in Kent, OH. The day begins with a continental breakfast and registration at 8 a.m. and concludes at 5 p.m. The College of Commissioner Science is the highest form of commissioner education available at the local level. The college is modeled after college courses and degrees. A commissioner has the opportunity to earn a Bachelor, Master and Doctorate degree by attending the college and satisfying the requirements and prerequisites. They may also take courses as part of a continuing education program. The purpose of the College of Commissioner Science is to provide ongoing practical training for all commissioners to allow them to better serve their units. “Learning is a lifetime activity. As commissioners, we must continually adjust our skills to provide a more valuable service to our units. Therefore, commissioners should view learning as an important part of their Scouting lives—every month, every year.” Why do commissioners need the college? The college offers the opportunity to:

1. Tiger Cubs BSA gives parents an opportunity to provide their children with a safe, structured, nurturing environment. 2. Tiger Cubs and their adult partners have fun together while developing closer relationships within the family. The Tiger Cub program is one of the few available designed to bring the boy and his family closer together. 3. The Cub Scout pack benefits by gaining a group of future Cub Scouts who are ready and eager to become more deeply involved in helping the pack to go. 4. The pack gains a pool of adults who are already experienced in leading activities for boys. 5. Pack leadership has nine months to orient the new parents to Cub Scouting values—instead of nine minutes during School Night for Scouting recruiting. 6. Tiger Cubs can be a most important part of the new Cub Scout pack’s total program and structure. 7. The Tiger Cub program parallels the first grade school year allowing boys and their parents to participate socially with other families. 8. Scouting can provide positive, enriching experiences to complement a child’s formal classroom education. Scouting’s programs help young people grow up into self-reliant, dependable adults. 9. Tiger Cubs provides flexible meetings and an easy to operate, low cost program. 10. Tiger Cubs allows boys to enter the Scouting family at an age that is important to strong character development.

We are getting excited for next summer’s celebration of the 20th birthday of Venturing. Venturing is forming a council contingent to VenturingFest 2018 (July 1-6) at the Summit Bechtel Reserve. It’s a great deal for a week of high adventure and is almost impossibly cheap at $500 for youth and $400 for adults. A meeting will take place in October those who have signed up. Provide updates on commissioner service and Scouting. The final result is a stronger and more knowledgeable commissioner corps serving the units. The mission of the commissioner is to help the unit succeed and the way to accomplish this mission is through education and practical learning experiences. The college provides that in-depth knowledge in all of the essential aspects of the commissioner’s duties and responsibilities. Recharter packets at roundtable!

Pecatonica River Popcorn Sale

October’s roundtable will have recharter packets for all units and a special training by Mary Hostetler of Troop 8. Come join us on Wednesday, October 11, from 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m., at 4550 Research Pkwy. NW, Warren, OH 44483. Each roundtable’s opening and closing ceremonies are now presented by a different unit. Our new Cracker Barrel Showdown is a friendly competition where anyone can prepare their favorite Cracker Barrel to serve. Attendees vote on the food based on 10 criteria and the winner of the 2017/2018 program year will receive a Scouting Dutch Oven! All adults are welcome and encouraged to attend our monthly roundtables. These meetings offer important announcements about upcoming events, handouts and informational flyers for district events, plus information about council-wide programs. This will be our last year using Everett Industries as our warehouse and distribution center as Bill has sold the company and is retiring. We all owe Bill Everett and the staff of Everett Industries a huge “Thank You” for everything they have done for us! The new owner has agreed to let us use Everett Industries for TakeOrder on November 10 and there will be no changes in procedure, but we are now on the lookout for a new location to use in 2018. Save the dates for Boy Scout Klondike and Cub Scout Freeze-Out! Mark your calendars for the Arrowhead Boy Scout Klondike at Camp Stambaugh on January 12-14, 2018 and the Arrowhead Cub Scout Freeze-Out at Camp Stambaugh on Saturday, February 17, 2018. This year, Arrowhead’s Boy Scout Klondike will be chaired by the team of Tim Sandor (Troop 4050), Ken Workman (Troop 4008), Ken LaPolla (Troop 4101), and Bonnie Dade (Arrowhead Vice Chair of Program). Roundtable resources Roundtable’s purpose is to train, educate, and inspire adult unit leaders by directing them towards the tools and resources needed to create and sustain a quality youth Scouting program. All registered leaders are highly encouraged to attend this monthly informative class session. Take advantage of the networking opportunity with fellow Scouters and join in on the extensive format of information sharing while building relationships with similar individuals who value their faith, core family activities, and their community. Haven’t scheduled your open house? It’s not too late! If you have not scheduled your fall open house yet, it’s not too late! Exploring recommends an open house timeline from Labor Day to Thanksgiving. An open house is the best way to gather as many interested young people and their parents in one place at one time. Teens spend all day in the classroom being lectured, the last thing we want to do is lecture in Exploring. Make it fun! Use this time to provide the teens an opportunity to get a taste of what your post is all about. Don’t forget to promote your open house in seven different ways! 1. Personal invitations sent to teens; 2. Reach out to your personal contacts; 3. Fliers/posters in the schools and your place of business; 4. Fliers/posters in the community; 5. Promotion on the Exploring Facebook page; 6. Featuring the event on your school’s social media; 7. Setting up a time to speak to the students at school. There is still an entire month left to sell popcorn! Remember, selling popcorn only once a year makes it possible for your unit to fund all its activities for the Scouting year. Keep up the good work!

We would like to announce the addition of several new volunteers to the district committee and commissioner staff. Brandie Reedy has agreed to serve as Lakes District Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner. Brandie is the children’s librarian at the Green branch of the Summit County Public Library and a den leader/ assistant Cubmaster at Pack 3334. She brings energy and knowledge to the position that will make roundtable awesome! We would like to welcome Dr. Tom Tallant as the Cub Scout Training Chairman for the district and are excited for him to teach our young leaders as he is well versed in teaching at local colleges and universities. Kathy Bugajski is accepting a new position with the district as a unit commissioner as we continue to build our commissioner core. Kathy has experience as a professional Girl Scout and has successfully started a pack in the Lakes District as well as seen her son through to the rank of Eagle Scout. She is excited for her second son to reach this rank as well.

Are all your new Scouts registration forms turned in? We are in the heart of a very busy fall School Night to Join Scouting. Remember to follow up with boys who came to the SNTJS and did not register, as well as with the boys who turned in surveys that went home. Don’t let any boys fall through the cracks, we want every boy to have the opportunity to be a Scout! Also, please don’t let any registration forms linger in briefcases or boxes.

Are your leaders trained? Do you have new leaders joining your pack this fall, or did you have current leaders change positions within the pack? If either of these situations applies to you, then you need to be aware of the Great Trail Council Cub Scout Training. This is a three hour training where your leaders will receive Basic Leader Training for their specific job within the pack. Please see a Cub Scout Fall Training brochure for more information or different dates that are available in other districts. Youth Protection Training is also required for all adult leaders and offered online at www.lakesdistrict.org.

Don’t forget roundtable! By now, Boy Scout leaders should be back in the swing of things after a fantastic summer and all new Cub Scout leaders should be getting settled into their new positions. So, let’s not forget our monthly leaders’ roundtable. For those of you who don’t know, the roundtable is a monthly training meeting for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders. Roundtable is the best place to keep up-to-date on current activities and information, get supplemental training, and mingle with leaders from other units and hear what they have going on. The Lakes District Roundtable is on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m., at Messiah Lutheran Church, 4700 S. Main St., Akron. We look forward to seeing new faces as well as the “regulars”.

Cub Scout Punkin’ Chunkin’ This year will be our 3rd Annual Punkin’ Chunkin’! It will be held on Saturday, October 7, from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at the Camp Butler Sports Field. Punkin’ Chunkin’ is for all Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts and Webelos, the cost is $10 per Scout. Included in the fee is a patch, pumpkin, craft, snack and lots of other fun activities. Don’t forget to attend roundtable! By now, Boy Scout leaders should be back in the swing of things after a fantastic summer and all new Cub Scout leaders should be getting settled into their new positions. So, let’s not forget our monthly leaders’ roundtable. For those of you who don’t know, the roundtable is a monthly training meeting for all Cub Scout, Boy Scout and Venturing leaders. Roundtable is the best place to keep up to date on current activities and information, get supplemental training, and mingle with leaders from other units and hear what they have going on. If either of these situations applies to you, then you need to be aware of the Old Portage District Cub Scout Training. This is a three hour training where your leaders will receive Basic Leader Training for their specific job within the pack. The date for fall training is Wednesday, October, 25. New leaders? Training is November 18

The month of September is over. It was a busy one for everyone, especially the Cub packs who worked so hard to recruit new members. A special thank you goes out to everyone on the membership and commissioner teams for attending School Nights and offering their helping hands to packs with their recruiting. A special thank you goes to Beth Meyer for organizing district attendance at school open houses and scheduling SNTJS and making sure proper district representation was in attendance. Now that school nights are over, make sure to hand in any applications that haven’t been turned in yet. Please bring any outstanding apps to the October roundtable!

Do you have new leaders you recruited this fall? If so, send them to get trained! Remember every youth deserves a properly trained leader! Seneca will be hosting a Cub and Boy Scout Leader training session. Cub Scout Leader Training will be held on Saturday, November 18, and will go from 8:30 a.m.12:30 p.m. Registration begins at 8 a.m. Training will be held at the Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 E. SNTJS II Community Nights

Klondike is coming!

Please keep in mind that in October we will be doing Community Nights for our SNTJS II. We will be scheduling multiple packs at central locations to have one more chance at recruiting those last few Cub Scouts. The idea of this is to have packs in the same towns meet at one location and to have any last boys who want to join Scouts meet there. At this central location the boys will have the opportunity to join a pack based on location, schedule, friends, etc. Any questions contact Nate Watson at 330-773-0415 ext. 227.

Council Venturing President selected

Venturing Fun Weekend, November 3-5

Jake Toman, 18, an Eagle Scout from Troop 1 and a member of Crew 2001, has been selected by the Crew Presidents of the GTC VOA to serve as the 2017-2018 Venturing President. He will lead the VOA supported by his three vice presidents, and with his Adviser will represent the council to the Central Region Area 4 VOA. Jake is a senior at Archbishop Hoban High School. He has participated in over 100 nights of camping including attending VenturingFest in 2016. He has already spoken multiple times to encourage youth to sign up for VenturingFest 2018 and will be a great spokesperson for the Venturing motto to Lead the Adventure. He likes music especially playing steel drums and singing show tunes with friends. Also, he excels in mock trial and loves anything Harry Potter. You can contact Jake at [email protected].

Plan an open house in October Crews in Venturing are small. The average size of our traditional crews are less than 10 Venturers under 21. The loss of only a few members to work or other pursuits means the whole crew may have a struggle to get anything done. You need new members, especially those new high school freshmen. We need a lot of new 14 year-olds to be invited to join in the fun. So go get them! Pick an open house date in October for a fun activity, tell your DE when it is and get the word out to as many as you can including your crew members’ friends, the local troop, school, anywhere. Invite them to your open house planned around a fun activity. Your crew can hold this at a bowling alley, that trampoline place up the road, or plan a game night at your regular meeting location, that is, meet anywhere you can have fun. Let your new friends enjoy the fun and invite them back for more. Oh yeah and spend some time sharing your plans and hopes for the coming year and showing them about Venturing. Fun fact: The words ‘Open House’ appear in the Guidebook for Advisors only four times, but appear 42 times in the Handbook for Venturers. Who do you think should be running the open house? Vice presidents selected Three other Great Trail youth have agreed to take on the roles of vice presidents of administration, program and communication. They are Isabel Zager, Jacob Schul, and Adelaide White respectively.

September VOA Kick-off, Silver, VLAs and new officers Jake and his vice presidents selection was led by Central Region Area 4 Venturing President Grace Prorok. She presented to Scout Executive Patrick Scherer and VOA Advisor Kimberly Myers, for the second year in a row, a national award for achieving the Silver level of the Council Standards of Venturing Excellence. Also, at the VOA kickoff, Grace presented Kimberly Myers with the Area Venturing Leadership Award. She joins Wendy Greathouse who was also presented the area award last month. Patrick Scherer spoke to the youth assembled and told of his Venturing experience and hopes for the growth of Venturing in GTC. He spoke of the lack of good programming for high school and college youth and said the new Council Venturing President would be involved in needed strategic planning. It was so good to have the Scout Executive give his time to address the youth and advisors assembled.

Our October roundtable topic is Aquatics Safety Afloat and Canoe Safety. Looking forward to November, our roundtable will be held on Thursday, November 2, and the topic will be new gadgets and equipment. Scout Museum tours and programs Tours can be arranged for the Camp Stambaugh Scout Museum by calling Bill Moss at 330-755-6795 or better yet by emailing at [email protected] with a request to tour the museum or request a special program for your unit. Both Cub packs and Scout troops are encouraged to come out to the museum and have a short meeting there and tour the museum. Boy Scouts can work on building a commando rope, which they get to keep, it's free. Cub Scouts can build an Indian Bone Game, which they get to keep, it's free. We even do History Hunts for answers to questions about Scouting which can be run as a competition between dens and/or patrols. We can even run a History Hunt as a station during district or council activities. There also is a store in the museum where you can get FREE things and even buy some of the historical things from Scouting's past.

Recharter packet distribution Recharter packets for the 2018 calendar year will be distributed at the October roundtable. Please make sure a representative from your unit will be attending the meeting to receive your unit’s recharter packet.

Popcorn sale information We hope everyone is out there selling their popcorn! Don’t forget that Take Orders will be due to the council at the end of this month! Make sure your Scouts have everything turned in to your unit kernel in time so that we don’t miss any orders. The 2017 popcorn season is off and running! Remember to turn in your order forms and prize forms on Tuesday, October 31, to the Scout Service Center in Akron!
