PROGRAMMING YOUR DMR RADIO PRESENTED BY CHUCK KRALY KØXM SEPTEMBER 30, 2017
Beginning Steps • • • • • • •
READ AND SAVE YOUR RADIO PROGRAMMING CREATE A BLANK CODE PLUG IN CPS Enter YOUR DMR-MARC number Enter Group Call Items (Talk Groups) Create Zones Create Scan Lists (If Any) Save Code plug under NEW name in a location you will remember (i.e. Desktop)
CREATION OF A DMR CHANNEL Transmit/Receive Frequencies Repeater Color Code Group Call Contact(s) TIME SLOT (THIS IS VERY CRITICAL) T.O.T. To 180 Sec. Tx Admit Criteria- for repeaters set to “Color Code” or Color Code Free”. Simplex set to “Always” • Name Of Channel Contains Talk Group Name in it • PERFORM SAVE AFTER EACH CHANNEL IS CREATED • • • • • •
• Once the channel is created….
• Add the channel to a ZONE (one you created earlier) • Then and only then will it be accessible for use. • Write the settings to the radio at this time to test • • • • • •
CREATING A SCAN LIST Open the channel in CPS. Select which Scan List you want THAT channel in. Save the changes Go to the Scan list window Select the Channel you want in THAT list and move it to the right column.
• When working with Channels and Scan Lists there is one rule that cannot be changed. • Each Channel can only use ONE scan list. • So, no matter how many scan lists you create, each channel can only function in ONE. • The work around is to make the same channel multiple times but with different names, and place in different zones and scan lists • Once you are done, then save the programming, then write to radio…..
• Items that need to be addressed…. • Rx Groups • Overall, Rx Groups with MULTIPLE Talk Groups in them are VERY, VERY BAD. They are a scanner that cannot be turned off… • In the TYT MD380/390/2017 radios, Rx Groups are a NECESSITY• They make it so the user does not have to wait forever to join the conversation. • How do I set this up? • Simple. You create multiple RxGroups, one for every Talk Group you plan on using, and placing only THAT ONE Talk Group in there. So if you are planning on using BYRG (31201) then you would create a RxGroup for BYRG with ONLY BYRG in it. • In each channel you select the RxGroup for the TX Group , Group Call Or TX Contact that channel uses.
• Fast Key ups by users….. • Folks, as the systems grow and are internet linked, PLEASE delay on your replies. There is an inherent latency thanks to the internet that causes enough delay that if you are quick on the trigger, someone outside of the repeater you are using may not get a chance to jump in. • PLEASE count mentally to at LEAST 2 before jumping in and if you like 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, then use that. We don’t care just drag your feet. • Make SURE when you set your radio as you like, you have the tx beeps turned on. That way you will know for SURE if you have the system. • Concerning Motorola Radios…NEVER, EVER just download a code plug form the net and drop into your radio. Use the copy/paste functions to get the info into YOUR code plug.

Folks the last couple of years has been a blast. But, unfortunately after today, I will be drastically dropping back from DMR, and ham radio as a whole. While DMR has brought a new joy to many of our lives, and after 35+ yrs. of building repeaters bringing a smile to this old mans face, it had to be ruined. Due to people who do NOT listen OR think when playing on the radio, it has caused me MUCH frustration and mental anguish. While I love ham radio, I cannot physically handle the stress. So having said that, I regret informing you that after today, I will not be available to assist in any programming issues. In a nutshell, you are on your own. The effort I and the BYRG has done and the requests we have made on how to operate the systems so they stay around for a long time has fallen on deaf ears. So if due to some who LOVE listening to 3100 burn up ANOTHER (yes one has burned up) repeater- then all I can say is “oh well” I wish everyone fun, happiness and joy in this little part of the ham radio hobby. I will be around somewhere and the repeater systems will NOT disappear. I have turned over everything to the respective groups. I have no claim to any of the hardware. And if you are wondering, everything but ½ of the Mission UHF has come out of my pocket. And the operation of it belongs to the groups when it hits the air. And it is at the request of YOU…so enjoy.
