From School Library Journal Gr 4–7—In this companion to Nightingale's Nest (Razorbill, 2014), 12-year-old Peter Stone's new home in rural Texas is completely unlike his previous life in San Antonio. Even in the quiet of the country, his family is too loud. They never stop to understand sensitive, introverted Peter. The boy soon ventures into the valley and meets the infuriatingly fascinating Annie, a self-proclaimed "wish girl." He wonders if she might be magical, like the mysterious valley. However, what she really means is "Make-a-Wish girl": Annie has cancer. Weaving in elements of magical realism, this modern story combines light fantasy elements with the harsh reality of Peter's life, including some harrowing past experiences with bullies and a period of dark depression and thoughts of self-harm. The fears and dreams of the characters unfold as they make difficult, sometimes life-changing decisions. The valley is a character, too, mysteriously directing animals and plants to help friends or hinder foes. Peter's first-person perspective is outshined by descriptions of feisty Annie, who dreams of becoming a world famous artist. Through the creation of site-specific environmental pieces, Annie teaches Peter about the transformative power of art and ephemeral beauty. Other themes include bullying and the value of listening. Peter knows the names and habits of many geographically specific flora and fauna, though it's never fully explained why a city boy has such extensive knowledge of natural science. Nevertheless, this is an intensely compelling story. A dying girl gives a boy the strength to live in this lyrical novel that will break your heart and lift your spirit Peter Stone’s parents and siblings are extroverts, musicians, and yellers—and the louder they get, the less Peter talks, or even moves, until he practically fits his last name. When his family moves to the Texas Hill Country, though, Peter finds a tranquil, natural valley where he can, at last, hear himself think. There, he meets a girl his age: Annie Blythe. Annie tells Peter she’s a “wish girl.” But Annie isn’t just any wish girl; she’s a “Make-A-Wish Girl.” And in two weeks she will begin a dangerous treatment to try and stop her cancer from spreading. Left alone, the disease will kill her. But the treatment may cause serious, lasting damage to her brain. Annie and Peter hatch a plan to escape into the valley, which they begin to think is magical. But the pair soon discovers that the valley—and life—may have other plans for them. And sometimes wishes come true in ways they would never expect. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

WISH GIRL is filled with wonder, friendship and magic. By KidsReads The Stone family moves to the hill country in Texas because there is something wrong with Peter; he likes to be still and silent. Peter is silent because it causes people to leave him alone, but it confuses those around him --- even his family. In the hill country, Peter finds a magical oasis that he wants to have all to himself. He stands perfectly still like a statue when he unexpectedly finds Annie, a girl who tells her he didn’t see her because “she blends.” She also tells Peter that his name means stone, which seems appropriate. He longs to be alone, so he goes back to being still in the hopes that, like other people, Annie will eventually move on. Instead, she shows him her drawing of him; she is an artist and dreams of attending art camp. Her real wish is that she’ll be able to grow up and become an artist, but her upcoming cancer treatments will leave her with brain damage. It’s hard for Peter to imagine someone so alive in spirit not becoming an artist or dying from cancer. Maybe he should stop being so self-absorbed, like his family, and try to understand what she’s going through. In this enchanted valley their friendship grows. They spend hours at a time making art and enjoying nature. When Peter’s dad meets two rough boys, Jake and Doug, he suggests that Peter befriend them.

The first time Peter meets Jake and Doug they are carrying a dead vulture, which repulses Peter. He tries not to show it, but the other two boys pick up on it. They target Peter as the new kid to pick on. Throughout the story they torment him, doing everything from pointing a gun at him to trying to break into his house. One day, they track Peter to the valley, and he wants to protect Annie from them. He’s never been able to stand up for himself, but will he be able to fend off the boys from Annie? WISH GIRL is filled with wonder, friendship and magic. The Texas hill country has a euphoric quality. The pond that Annie and Peter like to visit is lush and breathtakingly beautiful. The wind, plants and animals seem to hear Peter and Annie’s thoughts and help protect them. For instance, Peter notices that the insects never bite Annie or him, but they swarm around Jake and Doug. Those two tough boys are scratched up from the plants, but Annie and Peter never get scraped up. Peter never had a friend before coming to the valley, yet here in this wonderful place he meets someone who understands and appreciates him. The valley provides gifts to the sweet and innocent. Nikki Loftkin has written a wonderful book --- I highly recommend it. It was so amazing that now I want to read her well-reviewed books NIGHTINGALE’S NEST and THE SINISTER SWEETNESS OF SPLENDID ACADEMY. To learn more about the author visit www.nikkiloftin.com. Wish Girl - Deep friendship, big conversations, and the magic of nature By Sara Wish Girl is one of those special books that so clearly demonstrates the magic and agelessness of children's literature. This third novel from Nikki Loftin is an incredibly beautiful novel, filled with characters and prose that will undoubtedly wriggle deep into your heart. “Turns out, it's not running away when no one notices you're gone.” Peter Stone is a quiet boy who feels perpetually adrift. Quiet and introspective, he struggles to make friends and bullies find him an easy target. Even at home Peter feels alienated; his family, loud and extroverted, struggle to understand and connect with him. After his mother discovers dark and hopeless entries in his journal, the family packs up and leaves the city behind, hoping that escaping the bullies and negativity will allow Peter to start over. Of course, Peter can't outrun what's in his head. The pressing need to be alone drives him out into the nearby tranquil valley, where he finally feels like he has escaped and can be himself. I love that it is through nature, this beautiful but sometimes dangerous valley, that Peter finally finds and accepts himself. “'It's part of the art,' she explained, motioning toward the stream. 'The bringing together of the pieces, then the way they disappear when it time - the wind, or water, or gravity, whatever - makes the art lose its hold. It's not meant to stay forever. Some people,' and she paused. 'Some people wouldn't get it. They'd do all sorts of unnatural things to make it stay just like it was. Glue it, staple it, cement it. Even though that would ruin it.'” When Peter first encounters Annie Blythe, he's angry. Finally, finally he has found a place that is his, where he can be alone, and there she is. But, despite his initial reaction, he finds he likes Annie. Instead of cutting conversations short, he can't help but ask her questions and, before he

knows it, he's aiding in her crazy artistic pursuits. Much to Peter's surprise, with Annie he finds companionable silence and reflective conversation. She isn't like the people Peter wants to escape and she isn't quite like Peter either. Instead, she is just unapologetically herself. Artistic, opinionated, bossy, and devoted to living the fullest, most artistic life she can in the time she has left. The friendship between Peter and Annie is hands down one of my absolute favorites. It's honest and deep and powerful. The valley where Peter and Annie meet begins as a way for each of them to escape the 'real' world, where they feel overwhelmed and unwelcome. Readers soon realize, however, that the valley is more than just a place, it's a character in its own right - a unique, stubborn, magical character, just like Peter and Annie. "'No,' she said again, 'I don't want to die. Not at all! But don't you see, I'm going to anyway?' She pointed at her chest. 'What is death, Peter? It's when you stop being you, right? When that something, that spark or whatever, goes out. And that's what's coming for me.'” Because Annie is terminally ill and Peter struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, conversations of death do play an important part in this novel. While Annie doesn't want to die, she thinks it preferable to the brain damage and loss of self and autonomy her impending treatment will likely cause. Peter's friendship with Annie, seeing her fear and lack of choice, forces him to confront his own depression and thoughts of self harm. I often hear adults protesting to the inclusion of these themes and discussion in MG literature because they feel their young readers need something lighter or cannot handle talk of illness, depression, and death, but I truly feel that younger readers need books like Wish Girl. As much as these difficult and often taboo topics are uncomfortable and scary to talk about, they are real and they affect people everyday. Hiding from them, choosing ignorance, benefits no one. “'Sometimes,' she said, after a few more seconds of silence, 'sometimes you got to act. You can't wait. You got to do what needs doing, before the world makes the decision for you.'” I know it's early, but I feel this book is a likely 2015 Newbery contender... It's one I'll be recommending for years to come, award or no. **All quotes excerpted from Wish Girl by Nikki Loftin** Highly recommended. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. This gorgeous book is simply magical! By Aeicha @ Word Spelunking Peter Stone is a quiet, serious boy, who doesn’t feel like he fits in with his loud, extroverted family. The Stones have recently moved to the country, mostly because of Peter. Yet, his family’s concern for him doesn’t make them listen any better and their attempts at “helping” are anything but helpful. Near his new home, Peter finds a wonderful valley that just may be magical. It’s in this valley he meets Annie Blythe, the “wish girl”. Dying of cancer, Annie is a Make-A-Wish girl, attending an art camp near Peter’s house. Full of life and a brilliant artist, Annie doesn’t want the cancer treatment that could have permanent, life altering side-effects. So Peter and Annie hatch a plan to run away into the valley, but the magic of the valley has other plans for them.

Wish Girl is an utterly beautiful story about friendship, family, love, life, and death, and Nikki Loftin has filled the pages within Wish Girl with true literary magic! Loftin’s effective storytelling and lyrical writing are pure perfection in this book. Every word has purpose, every emotion is palpable, every character feels real. This isn’t some sweet and simple story either. Loftin doesn’t shy away from intense emotions and topics (death, depression, suicide, abuse, and more), but bravely explores them with eloquence and in age appropriate ways. And every emotion- from riveting heartache, sunny friendship, painful loneliness, startling fear, and stunning love- is so deeply felt. Peter and Annie’s might-be-magical valley is lushly crafted and full of so much beauty, surprises, and captivating things. I wanted to so badly to get lost in this wild, yet peaceful world with them. And both Peter and Annie possess their own kinds of magic! I fell so in love with insightful, endearing Peter and infectiously charming Annie. Their friendship is simply breathtaking. These are characters that readers will want to hold in their hearts forever...I know Peter and Annie have a permanent place in mine! My Final Thought: Full of laughs, dazzling writing, spectacular characters, and an unforgettable story, Wish Girl will break your heart, stitch it back together, and make your soul sing!
