With Denmark joined to Norway and Sweden after the glacier receded, the Baltic was a lake with many islands. As the glacier continued to melt, the water level rose, eventually breaching the dam and opening to the sea, about 5000 BC "in a cataclysm of gigantic proportions." A lost city of Vineta or Winetha becomes almost historic in the many different tales about its importance and loss. If that is not enough, the book ends with chapters on England and the English Channel. While Singer does not draw any conclusions of his own, he does comment on the evidence provided by others. A detailed bibliography for each chapter tells who the 'others' were behind the stories, and there is a good index.
To me, this was an eye-opener as I had only been aware of Atlantis and Lemuria. But it is not surprising, considering my recent article in the NEARA Journal (vol. xxx 1-2) on retrostatic land movement. As the glacier grew, its weight depressed the land beneath as required by Archimedes' Principle that the rest of the earth rise to compensate. With some l0% of the earth covered by glaciers, which depressed Maine 1000 feet, the rest of the earth must have risen 100 feet. But would this be uniform? And would the same land that had risen return to its original state following the glacial retreat? Interesting reading and a good reference source for students of lost cities and civilizations. J.
